I appreciate the feedback. I've learned it and forgotten it so many times. It's just such a slammin' track, i wanted to do something and put it up. I have versions with a full band on here somewhere.
In the intro going into the "C" part of the bass line it sounds like a (C) major triad ascending
C E G CCGC (or if it's minor then "e" flat) : the "E" and "G" are kinda muted or implied. Also, try to play the just the root notes and hit just the accents of Paul Jackson's bass lines without the extra stuff all the way through, learn the structure a bunch of times, then throw in your vibe.
Mike Clark was the drummer proving that you don't need to be black to have rhythm or soul. Anyone who thinks colour has anything to do with how well you play music is ignorant.
@Heffsta02 I feel ya man, imma gospel bass player, and David Garibaldi IMO is also one of the greatest, and rythmically influential drummers out there.. Skin is Skin man lol
hahaha.. every where you go there's always a racist bastard floating around. . what kinda comment is that to make? u know it makes no sense at all. . i know many black people who cant even dance to save themselves.. they have no rhythm whatsoever.. and they even admitt it... but no... cause there black.. according to u... they should be great at funky bass! yeah rite!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
no not just funky bass, all bass! Actually pretty much all good music was stolen from black people. Blues was stolen from black people (muddy waters), Jazz waz stolen from black people (Charlie Parker, Ella fitzgerald) not to mention rock which was pioneered by the great chuck berry (black person).
Or instead you can chill the fuck out and take a joke
Saw Herbie and the Headhunters a few years back on their reunion tour. Paul Jackson (who looks NOTHING like he did in the 70's) completely blew the doors off the place. He can still get waaay down.
Im so fuckin jealous of you right now. a version of the headhunters came to Australia but it wasn't the original lineup it only had Mike Clark as one of the originals and it also had TM Stevens on bass (an awesome muso in his own right). I missed the show coz i was too broke at the time. :( sooooo sad. Next band i want to see is Tower of Power.
Dude your playing is sweet though your line is not quite verbatim from Paul Jackson. I'm down with innovation, but that chromatic thing you add in the middle of the line sort of walks over these two hits that jackson and Clark lock in on that really anchors the rhythm of the song and makes it more punchy. i think in this case less is definitely more but thats just my oppinion. Other then that i really dig your interpretation. your obviously a skilled bassist.
thrust is at least as good as head hunters. theirs no hating on head hunters but mike clarks work on that is just it for me. Theirs so much interplay between him and paul jackson that just isn't there as much on headhunters with paul and harvey. All the way through the album except for maybe butterfly thrust is just at a fever pitch, an energy level thats just beyond comparison.
Also, I love the color of the bass. What color does Fender call it exactly? And what's the color of the pickguard? Can you get the with a maple neck? That's a JAZZ, not a PRECISION, looks like...
I think its called a candy apple red, with a tortoise-shell pickguard. This model is actually an Active version of a Fender Jazz. Its decent, gets the job done.
only a real bassist would know why he plays so high, you have the most dexterity when your wrist is in that position... watch a vid of the who with john entwistle... he is the greatest rock bassist to ever live
I agree with Soul74...too many bassists sound like a rock fight on a sheet metal roof with all the "raking hoof" moves. This guys style of funk playing is tasteful and musical. Nice job.
Hard to hear the full tone of the bassline, but whats audible sounds WAAAY good.

I saw this title come up in the 'related videos' section, i got a little excited as i had a feeling it was going to be this track
you do a good job of doing this track justice, except i could use a little more volume from you
but i guess that's the nature of jazz bass

yeah phat additions you added.
but i'd concentrate on getting the basic bass line tight and anchored above all and then the additions are just that, adding to the bass line.
good stuff
