@Drillin4Oil I LOVE the Supremes' version too! Just became familiar with theirs this year and wish I'd known about it my whole life. Jean Terrell sings the lead vocal awesomely, and the backup parts by Lynda Laurence and Mary Wilson are beautiful too.
She's more than versatile.. and still being hers each time. Fascinated by the fact that she has a musicologist approach: she digs for treasures, deep in the vernacular, extracts original song, does her own research and then processes these songs into her own editing vocal box....The high notes are reminiscent of Joni's, the carelessness that springs out from the whole song too, yet the lower notes are totally her own register..
I love Joni Mitchell and I love Natalie Merchant, and as great as this cover is, Joni made something special in the original, which I don't think Natalie could quite attain. At the same time, the cover is beautiful, and is great in its own right; but it made me realize once more that Joni Mitchell seems to have something no artist can ever have, whatever it is, and it's amazing.
Joni's music is comparable to no other. In my opinion, she proves there's a such thing as best. I'm 31 and discovered Joni about 3yrs ago, & let me tell ya, she's been hard to shake. I half to have a Joni "fix" every hour or so. Sometimes I've found myself listening to the same song over and over, realizing I've played this song all day, Crazy I tell ya, with her songwriting abilities along with her vocals and beauty.....it's almost too much.
shes great ..ive confused her with the eurythmics singer when listening to her on radio...but now i think i can tell her voice ...anyhoo i was singing this song to myself and wanted to hear it but all J M 's recordings(of this song on utube) were staticy...sounding ...
Holy shit! I stumbled upon this looking upp Joni, but this makes me cry too. wow. I loved 10,000 Maniacs in 1987(7th grade), and this is right now....wow

Man! This is is in the same league as the original. I would not have thought it possible.
It drags a little though. Dang.

What can´t Natalie sing? I mean..

Splendid..!!!

Sweet cover! I miss subtle music that let the lyrics and melody make the impression.
