I wouldn't presume not to call Hitchens a rationalist but I'd say this is the only question he ceases to be a rationalist with respect. Just war theory states that the burden of proof is always on the agressor and to this day I have never seen proof for the justification of this debacle.

Well, of course. Hitchens is rather a leftist. I find his support of the Iraq War surprising, but I think he makes a very good case for it. His support is based on humanitarian reasons - removing a brutal, genocidal dictator - and secular motives for stopping the spread of radical Islam. You can take issue with that, but I think those are pretty good arguments.

Frankly JohnPaul impressed me a lot more than Benedict does, although there's a lot I disagree with in the Catholic church at least there is the emphasis of exploration and thinking for ones self, unlike the evangelicals, at least in the developed world, the 3rd world church seems more along the lines of "do, do not" authoritarian, take the problems in Nicaragua for example.

this to me represents 2 people who disagree about each others religious ideologies but they are both sensible enough to see that the religious powers in the mideast( and expanding) represent a far greater and immediate danger against basic human liberties. Well frankly I'm anti authoritarian and pro-individual rights, something that most neo-cons rarely sympathize with. Neo-cons are almost by definition authoritarian, and let me tell you something, the problem with the Nazi's and Soviets wasn't their economic policy, it was their authoritarianism/totalitarianism. The issue with abortion isn't a moral issue, its a pragmatic one, if abortion is made illegal it will fail just like prohibition did for basically the same reason.
