its not worth it at all. the chemical price as well as the time and effort to get 3 grams out of 2000 lbs of material or "995,200" grams of material. and all your getting is 166.47 $ per ton. There is very little gold on Earth, and ridiculous amounts of water as it covers most of the Earth's surface. 3/4 is salt water, but the truth is we can (and will) desalinate and have unlimited fresh water, energy is the only bottleneck. There are even solar desalinization plants operating today. Diamonds and water are common, gold is not. H20 1.386×10^9 km^3 vs 8.5 km^3, gold will buy more water later.

I never said resources were unlimited, but eventually supply and demand leads to price increases that make it economic to recycle, for example nearly all gold, and many rare earths are recycled because of their value.
