  • Imagine that surface of liquids is a stretched elastic skin, like the surface of a balloon full of air. The scientific name for the way the skin of a liquid holds together is surface tension.

When the skin of the liquid is broken, whatever is underneath will be able to escape, like the air rushing out of a balloon.

  • In this experiment, the surface of milk is like the elastic skin and dish detergent is what breaks the skin of the milk, sort of like a pin popping a balloon.

Food coloring and more milk then escape from underneath the milks surface, swirling to the top.

  • if anyone can tell me why it chemically reacts like this it would be really appreciated. Thanks.

  • @TheWOWProductions WHAT IS THIS CALLED

  • @TheWOWProductions It's the dish soap you can do it with pepper, water, dish soap and instead of the q-tip u can use your finger.

  • @TheWOWProductions Um, it does not chemically react, but when you put drops of food coloring they bond to the molecules of fat in the milk (milk contains fat) and when you put a drop of dish soap, dish soap breaks those fat molecules (well how than dish soap cleans those fatty plates, it just breaks down fats) and dish soap is more dense than milk and it pushes milk (along with those broken fat molecules bonded with coloring) and it makes those beautiful patterns of color.... Hope it helped. ;)
