Hey guys ! I'm 13 years old and I do all the timed events & some western pleasure . If y'all can check out my videos & comment with tips & advice then I'd greatly appreciate it . All of us youtube people need to help each other out .! I hope y'all check out my stuff and have a good day everyone !
The horse I work once a week is a lazy fat boy. He would either run into the fence and be shocked that I tried to get this nice of a turn out of him, or he would just slow down to a trot/walk when I am kicking him like crazy. I need a horse with some spunk.
@countrygirl9519 Well, it actually teaches them to pull thier body around around the barrel instead of being unsteady and slipping from underneath themselves. It will make it so the horse is turing smoother, which makes the rider turn smoother which makes the turn smoother so you can go fast and still have control. I hope this helps. Happy barrel racing. Thanks!
i do this for both reining and barrels. my barrel horse i got her to canter fast on the rail the turn like this and i get my reining cow gorse to do this to
@flagracer11 because when your horse is learning, it's better to teach them with split. Her horse may be advanced but she's showing you what to usef or your horse.
im sorry by my trainer taught me a different way that makes more sense to me... not saying this isnt right im just saying that personally i didnt learn from this.... love the horse though!
@proven1955 Look at there name, expertvillage. There just trying to inform horse people as best they can, or future horse people. From what ive seen there pretty good teachers, not perfect about everything but there good teachers.
every body has a different way of doing things there is no reason to get worked up over it, if you dont like the way someone does something then do it different.
@Cowgirl11396 so I have NEVER seen a roll back done away from the fence! Try watching a reining video on here and you will see they always roll back towards the fence.
Can chasers need to learn how to do a proper rollback too. They need to teach the horse to pick up their sholders too. This vid. is about a turn not a rollback.
Ok this is probably a really dumb question... But I'ver been racing for like a year and I don't think I've ever done a rollback on my horse... At least not intentionally. Is a rollback really necessary? And, is it all in the rider or would a good barrel horse already know how to do this? The horse I've been racing on is 27 and we're running 17's on a good day, would rollbacks give me better times???
@MissBritanie09 it most likely will. most barrel racers swing their back hips around the barrel and it helps the time. When they come off the barrel they are straighter and ready for the next barrel
@MissBritanie09 I race on a 25 year old and I use roll backs as a way to warm him up and get his butt underneath him and his front legs moving. Although it's not necessary, it is a great warm up and training aid.
Okay, I must say I do like this horse, And the woman is very good at performing and explaining the movements. But, When she did the "Rollbacks" at a trot the horse was NOT working off the hind end. It was turning on his front legs and swinging his rear end. This can be helped with slowing further down and keeping more leg to help turn.

This lady is making more of a figure eight than a rollback. The horse needs to be closer to the rail and move its front end from the momentum of its back end. The close your horse is to the rail the easier it is to do the proper rollback.
excellent! I have been working with my 10 year old mare on rollbacks and pivots after watching this video and she is doing great on the barrels with the roll backs. I have always been know at my farm for being the best at getting about an inch from the barrel without rarely knocking it over, and the roll backs have helped speed up my time around the barrels. I went from 16 seconds to 15.2 seconds average. Off to NBHA
@StarbertBKarrx yes we call it procupine. lol. idk why, but we do. the hindquartes should swing around and the front legs should stay mostly in the same spot
for the people that are saying these arent rollbacks and that she is stupid...you obviously dont know enough about the sport to be commenting on this video... seriously people...GROW UP
Yeah they are. This is a rollback barrel racers do. These horses are barrel horses, not reiners. This makes them get there hind end under them and make quick snappy turns.
But these are reining rollbacks! They are for barrel horses! Most all barrel horses arent reiners. This is a rollback for a barrel horse. So when they go around the barrels they bring there hind end under them. This makes them make snappy turns.
Yall need ta shut up frill .... she said a barrel horse not a reining horse she said it twice so yeaa of course there goin to b wrong ... if yall kno how ta do it then do it yurselves dnt take it out on her shes jus helpn out ... fukn dum bitches
her rollbacks were not correct but they were the proper way to train a barrel horse, you don't want a barrel horse to do a real rollback because when you turn a barrel you want that horse to sit back on it's haunches bring it's inside shoulder up and sit and turn, if you were trying to do a real rollback around the barrel you would throw the horse into the barrel, but it's always a good idea to re-enforce teaching your horse to put his weight back and sit deep and this is a good excercise 4 that
a rollback is when a horse sits back on its haunches and pivots around without moving its hindfeet ... they stay in place. you turn to the offside of the arena
shes not thrwoning the horse into the fence. thats how u teach em 2 turn tight. sllowly it is shoulders but if u watch the fast ,the horse is perfectly on its hind end. to turn by the fence close teaches them to lift their front end up to turn on their butts.
I used to rein and now a barrel racer you do not want a barrel horse to do a correct roll back because then at the barrels they will not turn them as well. And the pivot she was doing was completely wrong and just from experience you dont want a barrel horse to pivot because then they dont want to side pass.
she didnt do it right the was SHE said. she daid his haunches shoul stay in the same place yet her point of pivot was where she was... idk how to explain
Does anyone ride with the Breakaway stirrups? I want to know if I should get a pair, but dont know anyone who has used them,, they seem like a good idea. Just not sure
Im not sure if ive ever heard of them, but if there like the english breakaway stirrups (rubber band on the side which breaks if it has to) then yes, I would recommand them. They've saved my life.
I don't but I'm gettin some. They should make only breakaway stirups for barrel racers since it is so easiy to get hung up. So it would be a good idea to get them

The problem with this video is that when you SHOWED a roll back... it wasn't a roll back.
a roll back is a lope on the inside lead, a STOP, and then a turn, and then a lope on the opposite lead which will now be the inside as well. When you did a roll back, you did everything except the stopping part. Yes, for barrel racing you shouldn't stop to do the roll back for key hole, you'll loose time. but that is the proper way to do it.

I noticed they do this exersice against a fence. Does it help or encourage the turn to be quicker and sharper?

@countrygirl9519 Sure does. They don't wanna run into the fence. It guides the horse and helps them know what you want them to do.
