Seems like Santos, Brasil (Pelé, remember?), same decade. Santos it's also a port. Streets are the same, people too — we had not Beatles, except on disc (vinyl, as people say these days).
Pardon my ignorance, being from the States and born in 1966, I was a little surprised on how bad the city looked. Was Liverpool bombed during the war?
@dollyhotpot The Sportsman!!, upside down racing car on the ceiling, fish aquariums on the walls, Liverpool Express playing there before they were suddenly on "Top of the Pops"!
I met my wife in there too!, I said, "what are you doing here"!!!
The Sportsman, and the Star and Garter, Wow!, brilliant brilliant brilliant memories!!
Being a kid back in those day's...We did'nt have nothin, we were all in the same boat, but we were all m8s. we were safe cos everybody looked out for you..Not one door was closed, everyone hid their money in the tea tin or biscuit tin, that was to pay the coal man,etc..remember the dockers doorstep oozing with treacle or jam....treat's..the clout round the earhole off the next door neighbour if you'd given cheek..Those day's i'd have em back 2morra if i could......
Brilliant, thanks for this. Someone asked why so much rubble. I explained that the whole place, particularly Scotland Road and the docks area was a bombsite after the war. Considering we had four fifths of f* all and ration books until some time around the coronation those kids look well cared for. By the time the Cavern was in full swing things had improved massively and we all took a pride in our appearance - even if we still dressed like our dads. I got out but it's a shame it has regressed.
@dollyhotpot God yeah, The Sportsman. Albie Donnaley (sax player) used to play there with his group Super.........Super? Bloody hell, can't remember what the band was called now, Super something or other. Remember the wookey hollow, Pickwicks, Allinsons, The She club? Happy days. Do you remember the Ionian club in the Liver Bldgs basement? The Cabin club? The Royal on Hanover st.? What was the club called that they built on the side of the Adelphi? Was it called the Banyan? Ta for reply.
Loved this video...just came back from my first trip to Liverpool, a lifelong desire to see the place that spawned so much of the music that shaped me. The people were wonderful, friendly and warm...what great ambassadors for the UK. I do agree with the posts that remember harder times, but more 'soul'. Same for the US; I grew up in New York in the 50s and my memories are much the same. I would not trade those memories to be young again for all the gold there is. Thanks for some great vibes!
I was from the "posh" as they said in L'pool side of the tracks,Childwall..Mossley Hill...but my nanny lived in Kensington,,I'm a vintage 1967 gal...I remember so many of these buildings..your footage of St James's cemetary (Anglican Cathedral) takes me back to my mispent youth of living off Hope Street..blue haired art student,no money but always larking about ..thanks for this ,very special to me 5*****
Love this! Do kids play like that anymore? Oh no! Course not - quite apart from dismantling the city brick-by-brick, 'elf & safety would have a heart attack!
Of course it was necessary to improve sanitation etc but somehow they took the heart out of the city.
Do you mean Edge Lane and Anfield? I agree Scooby Doo! There's not one city in the whole of the UK that has screwed it's inner city and we'll never get it back
The Wookey, Coconut Grove, Allisons, Wispa, Mr. Pickwicks, She club, The Shaky, La Busola, The Royal restaurant, The Oriel, Annabell's, The Cabin, The Cavern, The Ionian, Churchill's, The Pink Parrot ETC. ETC. All that and The fantastic Library, Museum, Walker Art gallery, Sefton Park (bigger than Central Park New York). Liverpool was unbelievably great. Thanks for posting this superb video.
@kaferere Arrrr you mention some places there..some treasured memories misbehaving myself..lol.esp in the Pink Parrot.in the 80's ,,I was famous for getting thrown out of The Black Horse and Rainbow,,,I was bad+smoked pot at the bar...I'd get chucked out laughing like a maniac, one of my friensds would let me borrow their hat...I had very long blonde hair,I'd put it up...stick the hat on+5 minutes later would be back at the bar,I spend alot of time in Sefton Park,it looks stunning, restored!!! x
@MissPandora1967 Yeah it's funny to think that there's a kind of geography and a "virtual" Liverpool that only exists in our minds now. If we all keep reminding each other of it maybe it will exist forever and one day we'll all end up there. A scouse valhalla. I used to play piano etc at most of the clubs and my sis used to be a hostess at the parrot. I'm not sure I want to know what a hostess at the parrot actually did but she was happy, that's all that counts. Ta for reply.
@Jungleloyalscouse D'you know what, I'd forgotten all about the Landfall! You've just sparked so many memories with the one sentence! Unfortunately I never got to enjoy a night there but my Dad and me used to service some equipment on board now and again. We always passed her on the way to work down the dock road, I think she moved location later on. Thanks for reminding me, it's as good as a Christmas present! Merry Christmas!
G'day Peter, I've justound the vides of yours from The Scouse house... they are brilliant, smile makers, tear jerkers, heart renderers and joy makers.. Scouse land in the 50's and 60's was better than anything Alice ever found in wonderland or through her looking glass. Thanks millions for the memories....WINDYDAN
I really hate how our city has ruined the pier head. What a waste of money. They have turned it into what looks like an ugly modern open sewer. It was SO MUCH better when it was just grass and pavement, the idiots.
i lived in liverpool in the sixties we were great you only had to open your mouth and you were loved happy memories,it all changed now i expect we were all beatles then
fantastic bringing back memories of when i was a kid living in liverpool in the 60s wish i could turn the clock back to then all we have now are street gangs :(
thanks for making my day looking at this piece of film would love to see more
Thanks for this wonderful piece of film.... for all of its bleak perspective, just look at the number of kids playing out and enjoying themselves. Whatever happened to that?
OMG Peter, just found your vids, briliant, tears in my eye's,i use'd to play on the playground infront of the cathedral on my way home from ST VINYS,there was old scrap cars and wagons there, well done mate good vids and music,ps any more?
right at the end..it looks like Paddy Delaney on the door talking to the people coming in...he died the end of february '09..never a thug..articulateand intelligent..a nice guy.

My father worked for AT&E but travelled in everyday because he didn't want to live in Liverpool. We lived in Eastham.

John Lennon's lead vocal to "Anna" meshes perfectly with the pictures. My goodness, the living conditions those children grew up in!
