They did this because they felt they had to punish themselves for their sins so they wouldn't be punished at the gates of heaven ( by being sent to hell). Actually, extremely small rocks CAN float on water thanks to surface tension, similarl to the old trick of making metal pins float. Of course the "rocks" I'm describing here are bits of soil dust, which while tiny still technically qualify as rocks.
