My favourite version is May 1970 at Berkeley California 1st show /second show was Not his best playing. I have Custom Tablature for some of this performance . Uni-Vibe...Custom Shop 1969 Pick-ups...Germanium Transistor Distortion Pedal (OCD) Hendrix Wha Wha and a JMD :1 Marshall Stack 4 by 12 Speaker cab...vintage Stratocaster...thats what you need....!
This solo is way beyond straight blues, it's a masterpiece of contemporary music. Almost every version of Hear my train played live in 1970 is fantastic. My two favourite come from the LA Forum gig (April, 25) and from the Baltimore show (June, 13).
the real heroes are billy cox and mitch mitchell. Wicked rhythm section, especially Cox; he holds it down the song while the other two take it through the peaks and valleys.
@guitarhead2k2 that's the diff between the cry of love band and the original experience. noel wanted to play melodies instead of just keeping the beat while jimi and mitch could play off each other's explorations but it was a vital function as we hear in even a great band like cream could've been better if one member hadn't always insisted on soloing w/ the other two and instead held the song together as a one man rhythm section. mayb that is one reason the band broke up: they got too free form.
if Jimi had five more years the music world would have been even more flipped upside down than it was after he departed. the world sadly only saw a glimpse of his sonic horizons and genius.
My favorite "Hear My Train" and it definately is a sad one. I love the deep amazing leads at 5:50 as well as the well put descriptions of the AMAZING lead starting at 2:26 and the whole end of the song, which gets a little Machine Gun like. Wow! I had an interesting "Experience" once listening to this song while studying about legal Salvia. Changed my life forever, for the better. Thanks Jimi. I won't be late!
@theonemodifier Thanks for this video man. If you haven't heard it this source, Stages, has been merged with 2! other sources along with the rest of the Atlanta '70 concert. Google Hendrix '70 Atlanta Vibratory. The quality is much better. This is my favorite too by the way. You can also find a torrent called Box of Gypsys revised with, in my opinion, the other best version of this song from 12-31-69 1st show at the Fillmore East
@96phjams04 He very deliberately builds to the soul saturated lead excursions at 2:26 and 7:36 marks. This is a high quality recording and lets you hear Coltrane like sound he actually gets with guitar, traveling to realms even brilliant Coltrane didn't visit. It's not a matter of best version (Berkeley, Hawaii, Woodstock, Liseberg, Sweden 9/1/70), but this one has a sad quality to it that adds another level of meaning to the song itself. His use of feedback and wah wah are literally virtuoso.
@drjimiboy69 well i dunno about beyond coltrane. maybe jus diff den trane. remember the guitar and horn are diff. instruments for vibrating the air. jimi can get sounds w/ guitar john can't plus w/ the supplemental gadgets like pedals and fuzz face change the sound. john reached the absolute w/ ecstatic energy and dissonance and so did jimi but jimi could have more obviously mystical content w/ the other worldly chords and such he knew such as in his live and studio readings of "hey baby"

I first heard this on a compilation called "Stages" It remains my favourite ever guitar solo by Hendrix. It just comes out of nowhere.

I would have to agree with you there my friend. Its better than Berkeley which I thought up to now was the best live version of HMTAC.
