  • I'm always amazed at how defensive people are of Carlock's drumming. Jazz, fusion, rock, or whatever, he plays the same way in all those styles. Loud and fast. Hardly like the great drummers of the past. It's just that most drummers today "suck" which makes him look "great." No, I've never seen rudder play live, simply because they hardly ever play together. Carlock is playing with everyone else but them.

  • this is awesome

  • @teeshowchesmoob couldnt have said it better than that man... and i "understand " carlock to the fullest of my ability and even beyond my playing ability! its keiths tone and sound that makes him sound like keith... i dig it.

  • Who ever said Rudder was a 'Jazz' band? if anything, I would call them more of a fusion/funk with elements of jazz and a touch of electronica... However you classify it, it's still a delicious display of real music, played by real people, with real skill and passion. Can we at least agree that this band has more talent than 50 of todays pop-artists put together. (Even that's a stretch).

  • I wonder if people who criticize someone like Keith Carlock have ever played any gigs ever, or have accomplished anything in their lives

  • No one would debate the issue of whether this is jazz or not. Keith says he plays rock with a jazz attitude. Maybe that definition is more to your liking 180was. Truth is, Modern Drummer polls sometimes cloud the issues even more. Why was Keith voted the number one JAZZ DRUMMER? I've heard him play some jazz and he cooks in that genre as he does any other time he sits behind the drums. But he is not known for jazz drumming. Come on Modern Drummer!

  • Asskickin' !!!!...what a band

  • Not only is Keith Carlock a world class drummer but he also has amazing tits .

  • hahahahahaha thats terrible

  • Comment removed

  • good idea.

  • Keith Carlock plays the drum set like he's still playing in a marching band in Mississippi. Come on, he and Rudder are not a Jazz band. They are a "jam/? band.

  • This is just one of a wide variety of songs they have in their repertoire. Some songs are are jazz-oriented, some are funk-oriented, some are rock-oriented and some are a comination of all or some of the above. Some do not fit in any specific category. Since it appears that their music clearly bothers you, "180was", may I suggest that you refrain from listening to it and find something more to your liking? Seems pointless to continue grousing about them in this comment section.

  • keith is playing with awesome guys ... but "180was" I have never seen in a booklet.

maybe the marching band in mississippi is the answer...

  • @180was That's what I personally think is so dope about Keith Carlock. He's like a one man drum-line. He's got his own sound. Maybe a little repetitive in nature or "not jazz" at times but definitely his own thing all the time. I dig it big time.

  • @180was have you ever been to their concert? probably not...

  • Dudes wake up this is new music. Jazz that doesn't strictly stick to prewritten narratives. Call this whatever you want. I call this good music.

  • that does not sound like "jazz" music. Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, Louie Bellson, Max Roach... they were great jazz drummers.

  • That's just one of many different styles they play. Rudder is most definitely jazz-oriented. This was one of their jazz/rock numbers. They don't play one particular style of jazz. Their songs run a wide gamut. Check out their other YouTube videos or one of their CDs.

  • they are playing a jazz club. when i think of jazz music, Benny Goodman, Stephane Grappelli, come to mind. They sound like a rock band. Maybe they don't know how to swing?

  • They don't know to swing. You are kidding. Keith Carlock is one of the best jazz drummer alive.

  • I agree-a drummer does not land the drummer gig for Steely Dan if you can't swing. Any drummer that wants that gig has to fill the shoes of Steve Gadd(drummer on a lot of Steely Dan recordings) who is one of the all-time great jazz drummers!

  • @911jesse

Can we agree though, that Steely Dan, more often than not, do not "swing".

I can only think of one song "Boddisattva" that sort of swings... but it's more of a fast shuffle feel.

Mightn't we say that Steely Dan "grooves" ?

  • so a shuffle isnt a swing now?

  • If your comment is a response to my comment, then you misunderstand what I've said.

  • my mistake, then.

  • Keith played in the 1 o`clock lab band at North Texas State ... he learned jazz from Ed Soph ... uh , i am pretty sure he can swing

  • it IS jazz.....just maybe not exactly how you would like to label it!!!

Jazz is free-form.....i for one LOVE it!!!!

Jazz should not be boxed into a category....music is expressive, and i for one like music for what it is...and not the genre people attach it to ...

  • you should marry Wynton Marsalis. then you both can happily live in the past.

  • @180was Jazz is an evolving music. If you try to define it, you'll never know what it is.

  • @Bebopopotamus yes, there are many different styles of jazz. I'm from the "old school." I don't mean to put down Rudder's style of jazz. To me it's more "jam" than "jazz." If you like, cool.

  • @180was Jazz varies from person to person (musician to musician). Everyone's originals sound different from the next guy. If we wanted to be real assholes we could make a sub-genre for each different musician, alive and dead. But we don't do that. We call it all jazz, if it's mainly improvised. That's really all jazz has in common with other jazz. Everything else is up to the artist.

  • @Bebopopotamus ok, well said.

  • @Bebopopotamus What's the difference between music and noise? I've read from a book called " This is your brain on music" that music is ORGANIZED sounds. In my opinion, bands/musicians who are the best at organizing their sounds, are the most fun to listen to. To my ears, Rudder's sound is Dis-organized. And Keith Carlocks drumming is choppy, not smooth at all. And loud. :)

  • @180was The difference between music and noise is perception. Noise to one person is music to another and vice versa. Smooth stuff bothers me more than anything else. Rudder may be a lot of things, but disorganized is not one of those things. They know where each other are all the time. I'm not defending them as a band as I'm not that familiar, but I am defending them as individual musicians. These are all some of the best musicians in new york at what they do. Are you a musician or a listener?

  • @Bebopopotamus I'm always amazed at how defensive people are of Keith Carlock and his band. You people are so closed minded. The musicians in this band are not the best musicians in new york. Just the most promoted. I prefer peace over chaos. That's my perception.

  • @180was I said "Some of" the best musicians in New York. You can't have a best. They're certainly some of the most educated, hard-working, and experienced people in the business. And who says this is chaos? It sounds a little hard, maybe angular, but, why does that automatically mean chaos?

Anyway, I'm not going to debate you into liking things. You're going to appreciate good musicians or you're not. My life stays the same.

  • @Bebopopotamus ok, have a nice life.

  • Wow, thanks for sharing this one - great music!

  • is he crying?..

  • That's me in the brown hoody leaning on the table. I was so stoned that night. My god, that show changed my life it was so amazing.

  • That was me last night. Good stuff.

  • god damn...carlock's a beast...literally and figuratively

  • haha ... no shit ... those tits are beastly

  • holy moly.
