Movie effects back then were genuinely unsettling and revolting. This movie, The Thing,Videodrome, Scanners, Maniac, Werewolf in London. Even ultra-violent movies like Robocop....remember Murphy being ripped to shreds by shotgun fire, the ED-209 boardroom scene or Emil being melted in toxic waste and then explodes when hit by a car? No fake looking CGI just practical make up. Great!!!

This effect I wouldn't put on the same level as The Thing. It is pretty clearly some sort of rubber, it looks pretty fake (even with all of the makeup that she was caking on).

@LouisLeGros No. You are quite right, it's nowhere near the thing. But I still prefer it to today's CGI Blood effects. Take a movie like Badass for example, when a guys leg got chopped off: Fake looking CGI. When people got shot: No blood packs, just more fake looking CGI. Which is innevitably what happened with the shithouse The Thing remake. Just my opinion though......

It's becausewith CGI, you know it's fake. It never existed, and the actors are reacting to nothing it all. With the blood packs, and animatronics and puppetry,it has a more tangible effect. it's real, it's sitting in front of the actors and the audience can see it is really there.Relying on CGI alone makes everything look fake.

@jeromie313 more potential for detail? Only as much as the animators are willing to give to it. In CGI you have to try to replicate textures and lighting. Tangible effects take on the texture used to make them and match the lighting the scene was filmed in, which looks far less fake
