  • Loved this commercial so much! You'll go bananas for Bic Banana Ink Crayons!"

  • I remember this commercial from my childhood in the 1970s. It played quite often, and I liked the commercial even though I never got my hands on the product. An added bonus was the fact that Charles Nelson Reilly was in this commercial because he was one of my favorite comedy character actors. At the time it seemed as if he was all over the place on tv. Commercials, tv shows, etc., but most memorably in syndicated reruns of the classic tv show The Ghost and Mrs Muir

  • This is FRIGHTENING!!! They look like they are in condoms. Someone at the ad agency obviously had it out for Charles Nelson Reilly. Especially incorporating the word "gay" into the jingle.

  • Sez "GreekGuy"....

    Chuck rules!

  • Char-els!

  • Yes, he has passed away, sad but true. I really remember this one! he was so great!

  • Is Charles Dead>?

  • great commercial - charles nelson reilly was just a funny talker, i'm 37 and i remember him on the Match Game game show and even as a tyke thinking he was a funny guy. ....trip down amnesia lane

  • I learned how to spell "banana" from this man. :)

  • We miss Charles Nelson Reilly, a great comedic actor.Loved this commercial as a kid.Still do.

  • "You can make a banana and give it a Hat." Most subversive line ever. CNR, we hardly knew ye!

  • We didn't know him 'cause we were too thick!

  • i bet all those kids are homosexuals now all of them.

  • Lol 70s.

  • OMG it's funny...lol bright and GAy O-o

  • Oh Charles.......you too funny! Love you! :(

  • I remember wanted a banana costume after seeing this when I was 5!

  • "The colors are go bright and GAY"...hee hee. I saw these commercials as a kid and thought they were so funny. Charles Nelson Reilly was great, a really talented, funny man. May he rest in peace.

  • Yes, heaven has a new entertainer. I hope he is having a great tim up there!

  • Oh, you certainly can be assured of that. He is probably rolling them in the aisles with his stories and absolute hilarity! I know Heaven is a happier and utterly joyous place now!

  • RIP you great yellow funny man, you...

  • I loved this guy.....

  • ultra-high volume warning!

I think my crappy speakers just blew out :(

  • He was really selling it! The song it great - I bet it was a "bunch" of fun to do...

  • I'll be singing this all day - thanks a lot! lol

  • That song is priceless, too - so fun!

  • Just like the others, I had to have one. I think everyone at school eventually had one.

Loved CNR on Match game with Richard Dawson and the gang...and on the Ghost & Mrs Muir, and on Love American style. He must be almost 80 now.

  • That was just silly! :)

  • Did you know that Charles Nelson Reilly survived the Hartford circus fire?

  • I wonder how much he got paid to be the top banana?

  • Great seeing that again. I remember it as a kid, and of course, I HAD to buy the pens. Charles Nelson Reilly, the best! He had a kind of funny Paul Lynde thing going on. LOL You can still see him on GSN, with the Match Game reruns. Yes, I do remember "Lidsville," and I think he was on "The Ghost & Mrs. Muir" too. I wonder if he's still acting?

  • From Internet Movie Database:

May 2006) Semi-retired and living in Beverly Hills, Charles occasionally directs opera, teaches and voices cartoons (most recently The Dirty Bubble on _"Spongbob Squarepants" (2000)_ ). The filmed version of his autobiographical one man play "The Life of Reilly" (The Life of Reilly (2006)) premiered at the South By Southwest film festival in March of 2006 to rave reviews.

  • This is one of those ads that made me run out and buy a product. It was cool to have a Bic Banana, even though there wasn't anything special about the pen. Charles Nelson Reilly was awesome! Remember Lidsville?

  • From circa 1973-1974 at the same time CBS was in its early years of the 1970's Match Game.

  • I'll agree with the gay part

  • Actually this commercial screwed me up... if you're a kid and you hear the word "banana" and "crayon", wouldn't it be fair to assume that the crayon's are... edible... ??? So straight through grade school that's what I used to do... box after box ! ! !

  • They were fine tipped markers...

They worked pretty good too. If you stored them with the tip down, they lasted a long time.

  • Charles Nelson Riley! God love him... now we can TRULY call him a "FRUIT" and not be homophobic!!!

  • Absolutely hilarious! Even to this day, it is still a classic gem!

  • After the taping CNR pulled out his blank and stuck it in some kids blank.

  • GOD BLESS YOU for having this!!!

  • Charles Nelson Reilly is GOD!

  • "The colors are so bright and gay!"

OOOOH MAN!! Can you IMAGINE the response if they were to run this commercial NOW?!

    Thanks for the post!

  • Interesting idea. The only one flamboyant enough that might be able to do it is probably Richard Simmons. (I'm dating myself) or put Richard and Lance Bass together!

I wish they made ads like this that were just silly and fun - kids ads today (and for 15 -20 years) are slick, marketing-ized and give them all of the power...

I think kids want fun ads, too...

  • Mint

  • Very funny ad - so 70s!
