This song is a top ten selection all time (by notables like Paul McCartney, among others). It's amazing that at a time that was so turbulent, someone could capture the message of the day
and make it relevant to so many people. God bless you all!
Love this song, Arthur Brooks on the right sort of looks like Bookman from Good Times lol. Very inspirational song. Will continue to soak through generations to come!
Fabulous...my faves from these guys are "SisterLove" and "That's What Love will Do". I heard both first by the Liverpool Five and they turned lots of their fans into Curtis Mayfield lovers.
There ain't no room for the hopeless sinner who will hurt all mankind just to save his own, Have pity on those whose chances grow thinner, for there's no hiding place against the kingdom's throne. This makes my skin tingle every time I hear it.
I find this song in its many versions comes to my ears when I am most in need. Thank you Lord for giving the gift of songwriting and singing to those who are responsible for this gift.
Magnificence! Sometimes, once in a great while, a work of art inspires, reflects and illustrates a people's aspirations and their vision. Brother Mayfield and The Impressions did that for us. This is a classic. RIP, Brother. Recommended:"We're a Winner", "Choice of Colors" and "Keep On Pushin' ". all by the Impressions with Brother Curtis at the helm. krxn11
Music like this is a gift for all generations. Songs like this one seem to make the worst of days just a little easier to bear. God bless the musicians who still believe in the healing power of music.
Is this the group that did a music video of this song on a boat? I had saw a part of that footage on a BBC documentary name "Soul Deep"! That's when I first heard this song! It would be great if someone had uploaded a that video though,I later heard Al Greens' version too,& it's good-REAL GOOD!
Still one of the best ~ and ever how close that guitar is to Cornell Dupree's style, and intro to "Tears of a Clown"? Love the tempo .. when it came out, I was stunned when it first came over the radio - which, at the time, was just a small transistor radio, teeny speakers. Sounded great, and the message came through loud and clear.
@MrBernellbruce - You refer to Sam Cooke's "Change", yes? That was the first forward-looking song of our generation. There is a clear full-sound audio file at youtube.com/watch?v=48K5Y0421Ig . Peace, from an old school sister.
@ps34evah yeah, I remember that interview, I liked how he said 'his sound' was the sound he creates when he fails to sound like his influences. Pretty cool. And absoloutely! Looking forward to his new material...
this is a really great song. i loved it ever since i first saw it on an episode of Head of the Class and then Rod Stewart's version. now i end up thinking about Caylee Anthony. May she rest in peace.
I remember as a kid growing up in the 60's and hearing this man's beautiful soulful voice. Everyone of all races counted on this brother to always deliver a strong and uplifting message of hope and strength. And to think Jerry Butler was Curtis's very close friend and musical genius partner. This brother was a disciple, a saint, and a messenger. When that train comes, I'm getting on it !
where's the train? I want to board it. come with me to the land of love and freedom, where we put aside all gudges and hate, and leave them in the past. open the heart, have faith in god, stop the fighting and wars which are destroying us and our loved ones. I grew up in the turbulent 1960's and have seen it all. war is not the answer for only love can conquer hate. former u.s. marine vietnam.
@BassGeekJack haha, no...its about creating god's kingdom here on earth...the train is merely metaphorical. as the lyric says, "there's hope for all." rapture ideology implies that most will not be chosen, no matter how they live their lives or relate to god.
Sometimes it(our music) was a source of the "soul power" only some seem to remember it as. One of the budding sources of a "black" 'cultural' revolution. Which I think sometimes stood for the power of the human spirit to collectively stand up for what was right, even in the face of all odds. So at times, these were the nursury rhymes of our childhood, imbuing us with the lessons of soul power. Share with your youth of all ilk. As authentic not stereotypical black heritage. Lest we/they forget!
Thank you for posting this beautiful memory. As a child of the 60's I remember this as one of the songs we sang when we were forced to gather, be it after some hero, leader, or President was imprisoned, brutalized, or even killed. To collectively gather sustenance, courage, faith in the aftermath of police actions/civil unrests to go on. Be we just afraid to return to our community centers, schools, or churches. Our music was not always protest songs.
when it comes to pure heartfelt soul, curtis mayffield and the impressions stand alone on top of the world. this has got to be one of the most beautiful, loving songs ever! " there ain't no room for the hopeless sinner", who would destroy all mankind just to save himself ". the message is still love people! only love can conquer hate. former u.s.marine. vietnam
I used to play my "Impressions" album all the time when I was a freshman in college, and I loved this song best. The girls in the dorm used to laugh at me and call me "The Soul Sister." @horndog646 You are a bitter little person aren't you? Prayers are a way of inspirational healing. When someone says "Your in my prayers" it means letting God know you're concerned. BTW: Never argue with a Christian. You'll lose every time. God Bless and Keep you well.
