The fatality rate per 100,000 miles is 15 for the US, 7 for Germany which means the US death rate is more than twice that of Germany. UK is 7, Netherlands 7, Norway 8, Sweeden 7 and they ALL drive smaller cars and they ALL driver A LOT faster on the Autobon etc. I "suggest" you do some research next time you post something as "fact".
Those of you saying "American cars are safer", compare this crash to a 1980's Cadillac or Chevrolet, and the VW will most likely come out with less damage. AND since it handles well, it's less likely to get into a crash in the first place. Also remember that this test was conducted when there were very low safety standards for cars. Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, and Volvo make the safest cars nowadays, and it's simply because they performed tests like these a long time ago.
A few years ago, two parents went out for dinner. A few hours later, the babysitter was calling to ask if she could cover up the clown statue in the kids' room, the father said,"Take the kids and get out of the house. We'll call the police, we don't have a clown statue." The "clown statue" is really a killer that escaped from jail. If you don't post this letter on to 10 videos tonight, the clown will be in your bed at 3:00 am with a chainsaw in his hand
So if giant cars are so freekin safe, how come Europe drives small cars on the same roads as big trucks, many countries have no speed limit, and their fatality rate per accident is way below the US, the land of the giant vehicles?
@squizzoo Being an American, I have to say the drivers suck here... I can't even cross the street without nearly being run over by some woman talking on her phone in her big Cadillac Escalade!
@CarGuy1368 well you guys should buy european cars, at least if you get as a pedestrian hit by a car you will survive impact with minor injuries a caddilac escalada and every ugly american suv shure will rip you open
@feki122 No, I prefer some 1977 FSO Polonez which would take that hit without any danger for driver or passanger and relax, I just said a "black joke".
The production of this car started in 1982. Best technologies of THAT time were used to build it. I believe that you weren't even been planned by your parents then. ;)

It's funny how europeans say americans have taken too long to catch up to their standards of technology and safety, when in reality American cars have been safe all along and only in the past 5-10 years have european cars caught up to american safety standards!
Yeah, that's why you're going to get serious injuries driving a 1950's huge Cadillic (impaled on the steering wheel or head split open by the sharp edges in the interior), whereas a top modern small car engineered for safety and ever tougher demands by the market will emerge the winner
Also, it has been proven in the reports of insurance companies that people driving huge ass SUV's are the most likely ones to be in accident. Their false sense of "security" makes them drive recklessly
US cars will never be as good as European cars. Only European brands are making safe cars. Americans just copy them. Even US sportscars are tested in Germany, before they did so, you couldnt even take a fast corner with a Viper or a Corvette (the closest to a sportscar from the US) Don't talk BullS*it ok?
You think I'm BSing? DID YOU EVEN WATCH THIS CRASH TEST VIDEO? Are you blind? As far as safety goes, the Europeans have only just caught up to our safety standards. And so what if we test our sports cars on the Nurburg ring now? Isn't that what you want? For American cars to be more European?
As you can see the car's front absorbs all the force it can before the cabin get's damaged at all, so it can be considered safe. This car was build from 1983 on, you couldn't build it more safe without adding a ton of weight thus ruining fuel efficiency.
There was major intrusion into the cabin! The driver would probably have broken legs and seems to have smashed his chest and head on the steering wheel. Serious back injury + broken legs = NOT SAFE. Kostnix, yes that's true: big car = big crumple zone = safer. However, look up crash tests for the chevy caprice and the dodge aries. You'll see they have almost the same crumple, despite their different sizes. So Americans know how to make safe small cars too, and have for decades, unlike Europeans.
Made all up to 2004 and still a total failure, failing even harder than 1983 MK2 Golf.... Dont be so ignorant and patriotic about you cars..And besides as Serrie1876 said only attempt that got a bit close to a sports car is a viper or a vette, with are both made out of cheap plastic bodywork and cat corner for shit even with gigantic tires..Besides, A Vette still uses leaf ex car leaf suspension..
lol, you are being ignorant and patriotic about YOUR cars as well and me. So not every car we make is safe. Show me a good crash test for any european car made before 1990, I dare you. And stop picking on the Vette and Viper, they're not even involved in this debate! And the Vette is made of plastic (LIKE EVERY OTHER CAR TODAY, European AND American) to be extremely light. Have you ever driven a Corvette? And what's wrong with leaf suspension? Solid axles are awesome.
CHRIST! Who the f*ck cares about the safety of the cars made before 1990 now? THIS IS 2009! Look at the standards in the Euro Ncap, they are extremely high, and btw, Volvo invented the 3 point seatbelt. And who made copies of them? EVERYONE! Quote: "Volvo became the first manufacturer to fit three-point front seatbelts as standard in all of its cars as early as 1959. And it was the first car company to fit rear seatbelts as standard in 1967, some 22 years before wearing them became compulsory. "
Well if you don't care about old car safety... why did you post here, on this old car crash test? Oh and 1990 is roughly the cut off date for when european and japanese cars started catching up to american car crash test standards...
in 1987 the mk2 security was redesigned and it scored much better.. in level with the time Renault 25.. it was aparently an huge improvement of security..
You can diference the pre-redesign and post-design mk2 easily by the "2-piece" front door window. One 2-part window = this . one piece window = more recure.
Of course even with the security upgrade its still not much up to today standars by far
I have seen a photo of the post-upgrade mk2 crash test 35mph and it looks hell lot better

I drive Mk2 ,never scratched anyone, the car is a god damn tank,i drove it everywhere ,never let me down, never had repair that cost over 50 euros ,never had any trouble with anything!
And if it sux in crash test, who cares i still love mine !!!You can't get everything now can you ? :O
Honda funs should listen to this because they keep saying and saying for their engines and believe that VWs and all german cars have untrustworthy engines... i also had a vw vento 1.4 with 290000 km, never had any damage, no trouble. always turn the key and go! if i had to travel the world with a car, a VW would be my first choose!
During war in my country ,only Golf mk2 ,diesel version could be seen driving on streets..
There was no Diesel ,but that engine could go just fine on oil that was used in power outpost ,people mixed that oil with believe it or not used kitchen oil and car was running great !!!
Well there was one drawback ,that was smoke out of muffler but that car saved lot of lives during war, this car in my country has name "The Tank"...
It was so tough, and even today ,in my country about 45% of cars on road are actually Golf 2 versions, their engine can't be teared apart ,it is just so robust ,mine engine has passed over 700 000 km ,i am planning to get as far as it is going , with all due respect to Japan's car makers ,but when it comes to Golf 2 ,they never could build or made anything like it !!
this vid sucks! I have mk2, and had a direct crash with another car from opossite direction and was only hurt, nothing broken and my engine still worked!! This was on the open road and I was doing around 50 mph when started braking
Theres a difference from hitting another car and hitting a stationary hard object.
Your car and the other car observed the energy and your crash wass less liethal. Though if you crashed in a building or something like on the vid... You`d die!
if you are going 50 mph and hit something else going 50mph, thats the same as you hitting something stationary at 100mph. you know nothing about physics, and chakja your story is bullshit.
there is a difference fool! a car is less dense than a abject such as a concrete block!! the speed doesnt matther!!a car can still observe the cinetic energy... plus two sane drivers will break before craching. We can never know the speed before hitting cuz youre supprised with a large dose of addrenalin and you cant really remember details!
I've got one of those... Maybe it's time to get rid of it before it folds up like a soda pop can with me in it. I wonder what speed the test car is going in this crash?
Wow. If that antique is that safe, imagine how safe the new VW's are!
When that year car was made, gigantic American cars were killing people who hit a speed bump.
LOL

Honda funs should listen to this because they keep saying and saying for their engines and believe that VWs and all german cars have untrustworthy engines... i also had a vw vento 1.4 with 290000 km, never had any damage, no trouble. always turn the key and go! if i had to travel the world with a car, a VW would be my first choose!

Hello friend..
During war in my country ,only Golf mk2 ,diesel version could be seen driving on streets..
There was no Diesel ,but that engine could go just fine on oil that was used in power outpost ,people mixed that oil with believe it or not used kitchen oil and car was running great !!!
Well there was one drawback ,that was smoke out of muffler but that car saved lot of lives during war, this car in my country has name "The Tank"...

hello, what country are you from?
dynamike555 3 years ago
Hello dynamike555 ,i am from Bosnia and Herzegovina ,and in my post i was referring to war from 1992-1995 year !
Cheers !

and it doesn't have that name for nothing !!

I have got a '92 Golf II. I dont like this video :-)
I think the g2 is a stronger car than we look on the video. This cars are built by strong steel's not by paper like Suzuki Swift :D

this vid sucks! I have mk2, and had a direct crash with another car from opossite direction and was only hurt, nothing broken and my engine still worked!! This was on the open road and I was doing around 50 mph when started braking
chakijaSMB 4 years ago
Theres a difference from hitting another car and hitting a stationary hard object.
Your car and the other car observed the energy and your crash wass less liethal. Though if you crashed in a building or something like on the vid... You`d die!
H2SO4X5H2O 4 years ago
if you are going 50 mph and hit something else going 50mph, thats the same as you hitting something stationary at 100mph. you know nothing about physics, and chakja your story is bullshit.
jbitar07 4 years ago
there is a difference fool! a car is less dense than a abject such as a concrete block!! the speed doesnt matther!!a car can still observe the cinetic energy... plus two sane drivers will break before craching. We can never know the speed before hitting cuz youre supprised with a large dose of addrenalin and you cant really remember details!

Maybe the post 88 models were a little tougher!

I've got one of those... Maybe it's time to get rid of it before it folds up like a soda pop can with me in it. I wonder what speed the test car is going in this crash?
