Personally, I think they should be pretty much done with TNG-era and move on to the distant future, like maybe the voyages of the USS Enterprise-J seen in ENT or something even further on. I read a Star Trek book where all the species in the Milky Way had been united into one grand Federation. There was still an Enterprise, voyaging through sidespace to explore other galaxies. Now THAT would be a cool series.

Indeed. The Akira class has always been one of my faves. While being so small it is still one of the most powerful. It makes me sad that it isn't seen in more action in any episodes. Yes I'll admit the Defiant class is a great little ship. Just saying that it is no match to the Akira when t comes to firepower. Not trying to be mean ya know. Just realistic. In a fair firefight I would say the defiant up against an akira would be like the defiant against a runabout.
The runabout being the losing one you know... unless it was shrunk and flew in through the vents and attacked the defiant from the inside like in that one episode where dax obrian and julian got shrunk and took down the jemhadar in control of the defiant... such great fun!
but it would be a matter of how you use ur fire power ( like how a crew would use it) and the manouvers if you get what i mean .... lol that my opinion for all ships =]
Well if it were up to me and I was having trouble shooting the smaller faster target... I would simply ram them like I do is Star Trek Starfleet Academy. lol. Always is fun to ram an Obrith class with an Excelceror class. I probably messed up the spelling there. "Damn the torpedos! Full steam ahead!"

If you look at the Definats designation U.S.S. Defiant NX-74205. The NX is for new class. Then the other ships in the class, like the USS Valiant will have the NCC-74210 as a designation.
Yes, the Akira class is interesting. It has several features that make it unique from most other starships. For one thing, I recall reading that it has a huge fly through shuttle bay in the primary hull. That is an interesting idea similar to todays aircraft carriers. Also, as has already been pointed it out it has a large number of torpedo launchers which give it immense firepower especially if it is armed with quantum torpedoes. In addition, Type X phasers are no slouch.

The Akira Class, Starfleets first pure warship since the 2200s. 6 Type X phasers and 10plus Torpedos tubes. Simply fantasic.
The Akira has only 3 launchers but each launcer has 5 tubes. Thats fifteen torpedos per salvo and one salvo every 2 seconds.
No wonder its Starfleets premier heavy crusier :D
