The health care bill's been on the floor of the Senate for three weeks. In that time the GOP's offered 4 amedments. Four.

The GOP's House bill was run by the CBO. It didn't expand coverage to any of the uninsured. It didn't have a provision about pre-exisiting conditions or payout caps. Yet it still spent 2/3 of the Dems bill.

Why should the Dems bargin with people who advocate for the staus quo and say openly the bill can't be fixed and they won't vote for any version of the Dems bill?

However, the dogged determination of Republican legislators to derail health care rather than to work responsibly for the best heath care bill is reprehensible. But the way they're leadership is going with the purity test crap , I wouldn't doubt it if most republicans don't start calling themselves independents in the near future . Correct. The goal is not to be in allignment with public views. The goal is to pick one or two issues that are popular with the public (ideally, social issues that have few policy implications--like FLAG BURNING, for instance) and then hammer away at them loudly enough that nobody will notice that all of their other policies are against the interests of the average voter.
