"Im going to go straight to my deck, protecting my face. Right time to demonstrate.... fuck this, BACK DECK ROLL BITCHES! " no kayaker can resist it, its instinct
I don't know who this guy is, or who convinced him that he is an "expert," but he is a complete idiot. He needs to learn to paddle competently before he tries to become an online (or god forbid, an on-water) instructor. He also needs to learn to speak, and come up with a much better reason for learning to roll than wanting to "look good going down the river." What a freaking jackass........I hope not too many people are dumb enough to try and learn from ANY of his videos.

Cut the guy some slack, will ya? What do you expect for free. He already explained that the Expert Village editors messed up. Take the good and move on.
he says do a c to c roll, then demonstrates a back deck roll. the whole video is telling you to keep your head tucked for safety, and then he does a roll exposing all of his face to the river bottom.... BRILLIANT
A back deck roll, if done properly, doesnt expose your face, you paddle will be across your face, and you are under the water for so little time compaired to a CtoC. Back deck is my prefered roll for speed of coming back up.
CtoC coming off Large drops purely because you will most likely be in a better position.
in THIS video: he puts both hands ABOVE his face. his face was exposed! might be a faster roll, but not safer. his throat and all of his face were completely open and welcoming the river bottom. DO WHAT HE SAYS NOT WHAT HE DOES
Hi all! This was originally posted on expert village and when it was filmed we had a version where I was doing a modified sweep roll and the version you see above. Unfortunately the editors on expert village used the same back deck video for both the sweep and back deck roll explanations. If you're confused angry or "short", just know that this was supposed to supplement further instruction and I encourage everyone learning new skills to take a lesson with a certified instructor. Thanks! Mike.
Great advice, but at 1:03 it appears as if your face IS facing downward to the water and your are leaning backward? Your face is not near the deck, rather you appear to be lying down. Thanks!
hah he just finished saying how you should lean forward when you roll. If there was a rock where he did the roll, his faced would have gotten ripped off.
The roll at the end was a fine rodeo roll , but obviously not a sweep roll demo . I use the rodeo all the time up here in AK were it's shallow , manky , and ice cold . Hitting a rock in any position hurts , the less time you spend down there the better. Brace brace brace then roll from the position the river/creek gives you.I think EJ called it the reactionary roll.
Very good advice, I managed to roll through a huge fairly big stopper this weekend, keeping your face to the deck helps, I had rocks pounding me through it all.
And at what time did he say this? I'm quite sure he DID NOT SAY THAT AT ALL. He said most learn the C-to-C or the Sweep. AT NO TIME DID HE EVEN DISCUSS THE BACK DECK. Accept, at the end, he executed a back deck roll. Perhaps you should pay attention.
Perhaps you should pay attention to the fact that he shows everybody how to to the c-to-c but does a backdeck roll (you even commented on it below this)
Your give good advice about going to the front deck immediately protect your face and setup your roll. You then showed a back deck roll, thus exposing your face to the bottom. Do you think that was wise?
Dumbass! This should be removed.

he says to keep your face down at about 0:38 seconds
tombeardsley 3 years ago
At the end he does a back deck roll, which is the complete opposite of what you should do in a shallow rocky section of river.
buckfast69 3 years ago 2
All of these videos are tripe.
You should see some of the other stuff they mess up with. Way worse than this.
