I got started setting up the studio to redo this video. I plan to do 12, 10, 8, 6 and 4 plait over. It will take a while but when I do it you will see how to drop strands and bring the thong to a conclusion. Thanks for the comment.

This is very cool - with flat cords, I suppose you cannot double the string. (I make these with looped string that I automatically twist with my fingers - so it feels like braiding with four rather than eight.

This is also known as a "herring bone" or eight strand square braid. You can do this braid with any number of strings so long as the ones in your right hand equal the ones in your left.

can you give advise on braiding horsehair in an eight plait? mine seems to get a lot of wild hairs sticking out

Rifle sling? I would think it would work fairly well. Not sure if I would not want something a bit flatter though.

Does it have to be coreless? Is that just to smooth out the texture or does it serve another purpose?

And when making a nylon whip, is it enough to use this braid as a core or should it be weighted with something like lead shot, or lead tape?
