I just read a fascinating book: And On Piano...Nicky Hopkins--The Extraordinary Life of Rock's Greatest Session Man, by Julian Dawson.
As soon as I finished the book, I fired up YouTube to search for Nicky Hopkins material. The first song I played was "She's (Like) a Rainbow" by the Rolling Stones, always one of my favorites of theirs--simply because of the enchanting piano. Should have known all along it was NH, who died too d@mn young. ::Sigh::
Great vid... There is no better QMS than the one w/ Nicky Hopkins, Shady Grove being their best and best one w/ Nicky Hopkins. The others are good but don't compare to the ones w/ the addition of Nicky Hopkins IMO. Cipollina's guitar at its best. Also, might I add, that Nick Gravenites also contributed alot to this record. Another reason its also so great is because Dan Healy was involved... A really great sound engineer who also worked alot w/ The Grateful Dead... X) SHADY GROVE MY HONEY !!! (X
I was 18 when I saw QMS with Nicky Hopkins play this song, at a concert that also had the Grateful Dead and Savoy Brown and the Byrds....It started snowing outside the venue, and the doors were opened and a bunch of ticketless folks joined us...wow this is a great song. I'm proud of our young people today. Each generation makes its music, but every generation can leave a legacy for the next to enjoy. Kudos one and all, and Peace Brothers and Sisters Old and Young from NZ.
Iam 62 and have been listening to "Shady Grove" since it came out. I listen to it from a cassette tape that I copied from the original vinyl record thats how fucking out of it Iam......but it still sounds great. As a previous poster has already stated John Cipollina guitar sounds are haunting and never leave you..................
@maxxz7 Keep your audio cassette head clean and demagnitized, "Maxxz"... I'm pret' near 60 meself, and believe it after whitewater rafting three days... Shady Grove by QMS/Cipolina, live at the Dog on the Beach or Fillmore, or Winterland/Avalon Ballroom was a rare treat... here's to you, you fine old hipster, and to hippie chicks!!!!
First heard QMS on 8 track tape. Then saw them at a club called EARTH in Pacific Beach San Diego. With the all girl group Bertha.Quicksilver was not that great in the show.I was disappointed with the lack of energy on stage.I continued to collect their albums and always liked them on disc. Some groups are better in studio than live. Many a party ended with headphones and Who Do you Love.
MinniMoose: Can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not. Hope so, as only a complete idiot prefers the pretentious, Dino-ego-driven crap of the post Freigerg/Hopkins Valenti years. Rubbish indeed...
@colfaxprof Ego? Pretention? so your ego tells you what others should prefer? and your pretention tells you you are all omniscient! Who's the idiot? Step on down from your high horse and come join the rest of us simple folk. peace y'all.

Great to know some other people even know about the band. I still have all the origional LPs. Here's a shout out from Halifax canada...keep the rock rollin
This is OK but like everyone I knew in SF we were so happy when John & Nicky & David quit so Dino could take over & we'd neer have to hear anything like this again.
MST you not getting g that I wasn't serious is very much shit. I loved the band pre-Dino & saw them many times Live for years before you were born; So keep your shit to yourself, man.
aurora1957A you sure put up good music for us to enjoy. Thanks-Sounds Great. Always liked David's voice. His & Duncan's are my QMS. Heard David sing Fresh Air a bit ago. Nice being able to dig the vocal. Nicky's intro is Classic Cip amazing as always. Greg's got The Beat. All they needed was Gary back. Just him. Happy Trails
the band in the video who u said is probably "long forgotten" is fucking The Beatles and this is from their animated "yellow submarine" feature length animated movie in 68-69 i believe
Nicky Hopkins before he went on tour w/the Stones! They Both Shared a Common Love Old School R&B/Boogie Woogie?American Blues/Rock N' Roll Roots! Quicksilver -John Cippolina! Gary Duncan! David Friedberg! ....
one of the best. nicky hopkins joined the band and dominated this album, because the rest of the band gave him room to play: i think it was some of their strongest work, and cippolina was never better. my favorite west coast band from back in the day. thanks for posting this.
True story. Me, your geeky typical college freshman in 1971 asking a senior if I could use his stereo to play an album I had just purchased. He asked me what it was and I pulled out "Shady Grove". I think my stock really skyrocketed with the guy. Good memory!
I seem to recall wearing this track right off the vinyl. QMS still sounds GREAT!
I have to agree here. I'm 21 years old and still introducing them to people of all ages (some that regret not listening more closely in years gone by!
Great song--thanks!

Thanx aurora1957A, you were right to rescue that old vid and put it to good use.
Pleased to find QMS are still appreciated, even by someone 6 years younger than me.
To my Ex & me they were "our band", who played "our song".
When we split, we both said "Uh, you can have that album", but I still ended up with "Just For Love", their best, I think.

@Sansana
David Freiberg does the lead vocal.
One of his best studio QMS efforts IMHO
