I've carefully analyzed this music ;-) and find that I just love it to death. Van the Man sings and plays as if for family and friends, uncompensated and for no credit to himself. Just does it to make people FEEL something. I know there's more to it, but who cares. It's music, not religion or politics or ethics or anything to protest or categorize. Relax . . . enjoy!
Thanks for posting this song. When my godmother and aunt heard it, she made me promise to sing it at her funeral, which I did. I'll be singing it again this weekend in Chicago at my mother's memorial. It's an emotional song when we lose someone to the other side of the veil. Thanks again for refreshing me on the lyrics.
I have been listening to this man for forty years and then I just come across a song I haven't heard before and I am blown away with the sheer beauty of it. Few people move a heart like Van Morrison and in such an effortless way.
Van is awesome an all but i like the Billy Connolly version better, just as well if you cant tell thats an irish whistle in the background your more foolish than not.
Van is as Irish as it gets. He's a man of genius and many talents and the world is a much better place for those of us who appreciate what he has given over his lifetime. He is a deeper well than most of those who have garnered more accolades. Not a showman, but a true artist.
Country music has it's roots in traditional Irish music. So it's no surprise some comparisons could be made there... All you have to do is listen a little harder.
what a song! ever since I heard this CD at home 12 odd years ago I've loved it. And never mind the bollocks comments realvsmith, if that twit can't hear the irish melodies in this song he will never understand the nuances behind any of Van's music anyway:o)
@musicluvr1974 Yeah, safe ta say my mileage does very, but if ya don’t like the song why even comment? And who the hell are you to say what’s Irish (Country music in America has deep Irish roots). If I stumble across your channel (which I have now looked at) and I don’t like something I’ll just move on, I’m not gonna make some smart ass remark. You don’t have to like it, but if ya don’t like it leave it alone. Have a nice journey on whatever road your mileage takes you down not sarcasm :)
@realvsmith I think I might be guilty of a failure to communicate, here--to me, the emoticon " :-/ " means "undecided," not anything sarcastic. What did you see it as?
@musicluvr1974 You are completely right. Beautiful song but harmonically normal I - vi - IV - V7 turnaround, regular countrypop harmonies and nothing Irish or Celtic about it exept for the instruments.
@blondstallion What does that mean? It’s not “harmonically” complex enough for you? I don’t listen to music in a technical, or should I say mechanical way, I like something if it moves me, this moves me. And you don’t have to be Irish to understand and feel where Van is comin’ from, some things transcend. I don’t know why I’m responding to this except to say, ya’ll are missing the fuck’en point. It’s the soul that’s Irish baby. Some of ya will never get that. Sorry for ya.
@realvsmith: That means that to establish whether a piece of music is Irish or Swedish, folk or jazz or dixieland we will have to define some set of musical properties concerning chord progressions, scales, counterpoint, harmony etcetera. So we will have to get a little bit technical. It's very nice that you like this paticular song, so do I, but a certain thing "you feel" is not very useful in defining the Irish or Celtic origins of it. Better leave that to the musicologists.
@realvsmith part 2: By the way, i love Van Morrison and Irish and Celtic folk music, this music moves me too. But that should not get in the way of a technical discussion about the presumed Irish roots of this particular piece of music. I don't understand why you take things personal and where getting somewhat rude. But that's what happens often when people feel the music they love is being analysed..
@blondstallion My intention is not to be rude, I am who I am, this is my channel and I set images to a song I wanted to share, so if I seem to take thing personal go figure. I'm not interested in analyzing music here, I'm sure there are other forums for that. Does everything, including music and other art forms have to be picked apart, compartmentalized and put into boxes? Shiiiiiiiiiiiiit, I hope not. You can't fit circles into square holes, analyze that.
Being VM's biggest fan (I know, I know... But really. I am! ;-) I was about to make a comment but thought I'd listen to the Billy Connelly version first. Wow! It's so good and I loved the pipers. It's as good as VM's version but just done differently and with such gusto!! Thanks for bringing the BC version to my attention

If you need to ridicule something genuine, you'd first require the ability to recognise it.

I think it is a little bit quicker than the album version and I like it that way better but this is nevertheless beautiful and heartwarming.

Um, country music is based on Irish music. No Irish = no American country/western music. Learn a little history and then smart off, jackass.
