@OnFurlough My step sister's husband is a New York State Trooper and works in the drug enforcement detail. So I am sure N.C. has a drug division as well. I actually got to read an article a few months ago that my stepsister sent me with her husband on a drug raid in Amsterdamn, NY. Pretty cool to read about and they busted over 50 people. Their front was used car sales operation but were selling drugs through the business.

Hey i got some questions for ya. I'm thinking of becoming a trooper but i was wondering about the tazering? Do you have to be tased? How long is the Basic Academy last? Thanks for your help.
@EMSchick09 Yes, you get tazed and peppered sprayed too. The CHP(California Highway Patrol) Academy last for 6 months and considered one of the elite law enforcement agencies in the country. Over 3,000 CHP officers. Other states vary with the length of time to complete the academy. I hear the state police academies are like boot camp in the military. Good luck being a trooper....it isn't easy.
Lie rs and thieves, I have lived in NC for almost 24 years . Mostly get stopped for drunk driving. I have not had a drink since I quit in 85 . Speeding always 69 MPH in a Commercial truck that will not go over 58 . I wouldn't piss on one to keep him from burning in a fire .
@lh8547 I read a book many years ago about the North Carolina State Police. Don't now if you know about it but a great book and still have it to this day! This was before the internet and an interesting read. You guys should be proud to wear that badge! Keep up the great work in law enforcement!

North Carolina's own little army. Never mind that they're a corrupt, laws-are-for-thee-and-not-for-me bunch.
It's gotta be fun, though: ride around in fast cars, speed with impunity, get 'professional courtesy' when you get caught driving drunk or speeding, and... treat your fellow citizens with condescension. Lots of folks like doing those things. And it comes with a spiffy uniform, and a gun - and someone else pays for the ammo!

What im trying to say is that if the NCSHP wanted to make a name for theirselves, you should focus on getting these corrupt officails out of local county and city positions of power. im not going to say who...yall are police afterall.... just check the election logs look at who has been in power the longest.....youll see.....in the county im from; the high sheriff has been in office for as long as i can remember. At any rate....thats all i got too say.....have a nice day....:)
Ok First of all let me say that ive have had nothing but good experiences with the NCSHP they are very professional people and treat the public with respect. However, some of the local county and city, (sheriffs and police) are dirty and corrupt there in north carolina and that is by the way, why i left. Im not going to say what county im from but they are the most corrupt, taking bribes from drug dealers, busting people then reselling their stuff too their people and other drug dealers.
The reason you see fat cops and sherriffs in NC is because they only really go through basic law enforcement training. The State troopers how ever have a grueling 29 week course of training I'm hoping to be one in the next year or so after I get my associate degree in criminal justice
this is the 2nd comment i've seen from you bout how bad NC State Troopers are...if you dont like them dont give them a reason to pull you over...that or stay out of NC
The NC State Trooper training school is run much like Marine Corps basic training. In fact there are many aspects that go above and beyond that training in some areas. Look into a troopers sock drawer. It's immaculate.
Hi, I'm currently finishing up my CJ degree and have started researching HP agencies can anyone give me some insight on some. Im planing on staying between Central and the east coast from AL up to NC. Thx.
I know GA is in trouble...read an article that some troopers have up to 5 counties assigned to them during a tour. I knew a lot of VA troopers back at my old job...VSP is nothing real special. I've applied with FHP cuz that's where I am now, but you're best bet is with one of the Carolinas.

NC Troopers are some of the best I've met. No matter what grounds I meet them on they are polite and give the same respect they are given. Plus they are hardcore, like, eat a live horse hardcore.
My brother and law just hit 1 year with you guys.. and man he loves the hell out of it.. he has me considering trying to get in and Im a career fireman...
hey ih8547. what county are you a trooper in? And im hopefully about to finish my criminal justice degree and then im going to apply, hopefully ill be atrooper soon.
Well, they certainly have their work cut out for them because 90% of the people in NC do not know how to drive. I have been driving for 20+ years and used my horn twice before moing here from CA. One of those times was to hurry my son along. I have blown my horn so many times here I think I might have a CD! lol
If you want to be a State Trooper I'd suggest being one in Maryland, Delaware, PA, NJ, NY, RI, CT, or MASS. Troopers in the southern States like NC make peanuts for salary and are confined to do only doing Highway enforcement. If you are unable to relocate up North i'd suggest joining a local sheriff's or city department, much better pay and advancement chances. On top of that you can branch out into different areas of investigation. Good luck out there.
also if you go straight into HP school right out of the military i heard you dont have to participate in all of the physical training. can i get some clairification on that.
For my public speaking class I gave a speech on how to become a nc statetrooper and i used this vidoe for part of it. But I think I saw one of the state troopers that lives in my area.
I'm just getting into this, what is a BLET/NCSHP? Also, would you consider being a state trooper fun/what you enjoy doing, or more of just any other regular job?
what is the living conditions in trooper school like do how many to a room and do have to shower to gather are they dividers and what do you eat and what time is bed and can you get kicked out if you cant keep up and how hard is the writing test
what are the living conditions at the school like do you room with people and shower with them and what do you eat and can you get kicked out if you cant keep up are what?
This might be a dump question but will I be able to wear my contacts or will I have to wear my glasses during the academy? I'm ready and this is something I really want. I hope and pray I will be accepted. I have a lot of respect for State Troopers and they are the best out there.
Thanks for your help and advice again. I have already asked the same questions but it never hurts to ask again. Do you get to pick where you want to work? I know you get to come home on the weekends but if you wanted to stay there can you? How long have you been a state trooper if you dont mind me asking. Thanks
It's no problem. You get to pick the three counties that you want to work in and they put you as close as possible. But you could go anywhere. After time you build up seniority and when a position becomes available, the person with the most seniority that wants it get it. When I was in you could not stay, but it may have changed. You could stay close by if you wanted but that's up to you. I have been a trooper for four years now.
@lh8547 Your a troooper? awesome. Id love to become one eventually but am 17 now and in NC. Can you just been premoted from a regular cop to state trooper if all is just right?
@ShilonkleDinger69 Nah. A normal cop works for the city. A trooper works for the state. 2 completely different agencies. If you want to be a trooper you have to sign up for their specific training.
Thanks for the help. Is there any advice you can give me? I have heard that the training is very tough but worth it. What do I need to be doing now to get me ready. I actually already have applied and I was told I would hear something back after Christmas.
Just try to get into the best physical shape possible. Also, remember that the DI's are there to help you not hurt you. And do not quit. No matter how hard it gets, do not quit. Good luck and let me know how things go.
Should I go and ahead and take the BLET class at my local community college and the apply for the NCSHP or just wait and do BLET with the NCSHP? Thanks
You get paid during the entire process with the NCSHP and you will not get paid when you attend BLET through you local community college. Also it kind of looks bad if you attend BLET and then apply. It looks like you do not want to attend the full time at the state academy. I would just wait and do everything with the NCSHP.
I really apprectiate the Three Troopers who helped me and my Neighbor with a Deadly car accident that ended up in my Driveway. Wish I knew your names, but you guys were fantastic. Very sencerly concered with my wife and 7 year old son, who were totaly destroyed by the site of a dead 15 year old boy in our driveway. your acts of kindness will never be forgotten. thank you...
Hey I've got a question, I live in NC and i'm wanting to become a trooper what are the physical requirements I'm worried about that i will not make the cut. i'm planning on getting in shape over the next year and half. because right now i am taking CJ classes at my comm. college. What would you advise as far as getting in shape like what excercises. thanks
@justdrew89 i had a friend tell here in pa that we must be able to do at least 40 push ups and run a mile, i dont know though for sure it might be different in nc, im sure you can find out online.
i just took the physical and written exam its a very intense day ahead of you be able to run 1.5miles in about 10 mins and do atleast 50 push ups and sit ups and if you do this phase one is complete you have to place in the 50th percentile atlease but good luck to you!
This video nicely recaps what it means to become a NC Highway Patrol State Trooper, and illustrates what it means to them BEING a NC Highway Patrol State Trooper! I gave it 5 stars.
You do have to take a physical exam. You have one minute to see how many push ups, sit ups, etc. that you can do along with a short run. Be able to run a mile in around 7 minutes. If you can do that you should have no problem with the physical part. There is a written test, I don't remember everything on it but I know there were several ethical questions. They want to know if you will do the right thing in a certain situation. Many of these scenarios are hard but just answer them honestly
In Patrol school you go through BLET plus around 16 more weeks of highway patrol requirements. You spend more time on driving, pursuit, etc. After you are finished with BLET and you apply to the highway patrol you only have to attend school for 3 or 4 months instead of the regular 8 months. Basically you do not have to take the BLET part of highway patrol school.
Your right, larger ones do, but smaller departments do not. I think they start Charlotte PD around $45,000. After a few years you get to move where you want, if theres and opening.
love this video thinkin bout joining do you know how bad it is? I made it through the navy basic training but this looks like it may be harder I didn't do good on my running tho so comment back if you get time God bless
Thanks for the video response. The training is up there with the Marine basic training. The hard part is it last almost eight months. The other hard part is you get to come home on weekends, which is nice, but it makes you not want to go back. You get paid while you are in training unlike the BLET training, which you attend for free to work as a local law enforcement officer. I say go for it, if you like law enforcement, you will probably enjoy it. Good luck!
Thanx very much I interviewed with the trooper today and I'm thinkin I'm gonna join up it doesn't start till nov, which sux but yea he said it sux you get to come home too for tha same reason but it sounds like a great opportunity I thought it was only like 26 29 weeks u kno but anyways thanx again for the vid hope to talk with you more God bless :)

The training is just as tough as the marines training is too.
ohiodeerhunter21 2 years ago
I have first hand knowledge that the NCSHP is tougher than the Marines.

Good luck out there.
shamrock32 2 years ago
sheriff's officers are some of the lowest paid in NC. the pay is half that of the NCHP.
gtyson1977 2 years ago
well the buncombe county starts at a little over half the pay of a master trooper
Mctaggart6412 2 years ago
How do you figure that? Guilford County starts at $34,000 with no degrees..up to $38,000 with degrees/experience which is more than NCHP
THELINEOFDUTY 2 years ago
@THELINEOFDUTY yea ur right man shit cmpd starts out at 36000 w know degree and your actually a cop not a wana be marine

I'm just getting into this, what is a BLET/NCSHP? Also, would you consider being a state trooper fun/what you enjoy doing, or more of just any other regular job?
jdizzle18diz 3 years ago
what is the living conditions in trooper school like do how many to a room and do have to shower to gather are they dividers and what do you eat and what time is bed and can you get kicked out if you cant keep up and how hard is the writing test

Thanks
yt324 3 years ago
It's no problem. You get to pick the three counties that you want to work in and they put you as close as possible. But you could go anywhere. After time you build up seniority and when a position becomes available, the person with the most seniority that wants it get it. When I was in you could not stay, but it may have changed. You could stay close by if you wanted but that's up to you. I have been a trooper for four years now.

thats the same with ohio troopers.

@lh8547 Your a troooper? awesome. Id love to become one eventually but am 17 now and in NC. Can you just been premoted from a regular cop to state trooper if all is just right?
ShilonkleDinger69 1 year ago
@ShilonkleDinger69 Nah. A normal cop works for the city. A trooper works for the state. 2 completely different agencies. If you want to be a trooper you have to sign up for their specific training.

@lh8547
I just have to say out of all the state troopers (i've seen them all) NC has the baddest lookin cars. I'd love to go around the block in one!

Thanks for the help. Is there any advice you can give me? I have heard that the training is very tough but worth it. What do I need to be doing now to get me ready. I actually already have applied and I was told I would hear something back after Christmas.
yt324 3 years ago
Just try to get into the best physical shape possible. Also, remember that the DI's are there to help you not hurt you. And do not quit. No matter how hard it gets, do not quit. Good luck and let me know how things go.

Should I go and ahead and take the BLET class at my local community college and the apply for the NCSHP or just wait and do BLET with the NCSHP? Thanks
yt324 3 years ago
You get paid during the entire process with the NCSHP and you will not get paid when you attend BLET through you local community college. Also it kind of looks bad if you attend BLET and then apply. It looks like you do not want to attend the full time at the state academy. I would just wait and do everything with the NCSHP.

are you a State Trooper because you seem to have all the answers??

I AM THINKING ABOUT DOING THIS

I really apprectiate the Three Troopers who helped me and my Neighbor with a Deadly car accident that ended up in my Driveway. Wish I knew your names, but you guys were fantastic. Very sencerly concered with my wife and 7 year old son, who were totaly destroyed by the site of a dead 15 year old boy in our driveway. your acts of kindness will never be forgotten. thank you...

if you have a two year ascosiates degree in criminal justice and have taken B.L.E.T. do you still have to go through patrol school?
dnewsome08 3 years ago
Yes, but it is only a four month school vs. the regular eight.
lh8547 3 years ago
Hey I've got a question, I live in NC and i'm wanting to become a trooper what are the physical requirements I'm worried about that i will not make the cut. i'm planning on getting in shape over the next year and half. because right now i am taking CJ classes at my comm. college. What would you advise as far as getting in shape like what excercises. thanks
justdrew89 2 years ago
@justdrew89 i had a friend tell here in pa that we must be able to do at least 40 push ups and run a mile, i dont know though for sure it might be different in nc, im sure you can find out online.
goodluck.

i just took the physical and written exam its a very intense day ahead of you be able to run 1.5miles in about 10 mins and do atleast 50 push ups and sit ups and if you do this phase one is complete you have to place in the 50th percentile atlease but good luck to you!
drsuggs 1 year ago
You are qualified for the 13 week school instead of the 29 wk class. You do not re take the BLET.

This video nicely recaps what it means to become a NC Highway Patrol State Trooper, and illustrates what it means to them BEING a NC Highway Patrol State Trooper! I gave it 5 stars.
GoManGo3675 3 years ago
Before you get accepted for the NCSHP dont you have to take a physical and written test? What all is on it? Is there anyway to study for it? thanks
yt324 3 years ago
You do have to take a physical exam. You have one minute to see how many push ups, sit ups, etc. that you can do along with a short run. Be able to run a mile in around 7 minutes. If you can do that you should have no problem with the physical part. There is a written test, I don't remember everything on it but I know there were several ethical questions. They want to know if you will do the right thing in a certain situation. Many of these scenarios are hard but just answer them honestly
lh8547 3 years ago
I am going through BLET, how is the short school different that the normal patrol school?
usaf1987rm 3 years ago
In Patrol school you go through BLET plus around 16 more weeks of highway patrol requirements. You spend more time on driving, pursuit, etc. After you are finished with BLET and you apply to the highway patrol you only have to attend school for 3 or 4 months instead of the regular 8 months. Basically you do not have to take the BLET part of highway patrol school.

Most city police departments make more money!! Plus they won't send you across the state...
fakedominican 3 years ago
Your right, larger ones do, but smaller departments do not. I think they start Charlotte PD around $45,000. After a few years you get to move where you want, if theres and opening.
lh8547 3 years ago
You are wrong. Charlotte does NOT start at $45k. They start out near $36k.
towncop 3 years ago
I thought it was a lot more than that.

cwyatt123 3 years ago
love this video thinkin bout joining do you know how bad it is? I made it through the navy basic training but this looks like it may be harder I didn't do good on my running tho so comment back if you get time God bless
voicebreaker1 3 years ago
Thanks for the video response. The training is up there with the Marine basic training. The hard part is it last almost eight months. The other hard part is you get to come home on weekends, which is nice, but it makes you not want to go back. You get paid while you are in training unlike the BLET training, which you attend for free to work as a local law enforcement officer. I say go for it, if you like law enforcement, you will probably enjoy it. Good luck!
lh8547 3 years ago
Thanx very much I interviewed with the trooper today and I'm thinkin I'm gonna join up it doesn't start till nov, which sux but yea he said it sux you get to come home too for tha same reason but it sounds like a great opportunity I thought it was only like 26 29 weeks u kno but anyways thanx again for the vid hope to talk with you more God bless :)
