Im just wondering how often you see big sharks in the open water?
I just got my first surf ski for christmas, i have got the hang of it going in the lake and the open water is probably the only thing i'm worried about
Nice!!!! I wish I could feel that stable in the sea!!
Your video made me feel the emotion of being actualy paddling there!!
I've learnd to paddle in a river now I am paddling in the sea, it's something new to me and yet scary... I hope someday I feel so secure as you and your friends!
I come back to this vid often--makes me feel as if I were right there in my favorite play area in my Eddyline Nighthawk 16 with my Werner Kalliste bent shaft...can't bring myself to sell this great gear even though serious illness will probably make it necessary. I can smell the salt, am wet with spray, and feel my heart beating hard, in a good way. Oh, to do this again!!!! Thanks, Nick.
I flipped on my Prowler13 doing this in the surf and my paddle snapped =/ This is really fun stuff though. The waves were a bit big and I was having trouble keeping the bow from going under lol
is that a petrel ? i was considering getting either the petrel or the night herron, i do mostly touring, but like to play in rough ocean water every now and then, i usually surf the waves back to the beach so need a boat that surfs well, but would also like speed and good tracking, which do you think is better for me ?? i was going to by a kit from chesapeke light craft, but would have to build the boat outside for i have no room inside, is it possible to build a wood boat outside ??
@mattgeb84 Yes, it is a Petrel. The Petrel surfs well, is quite fast and is well balanced. It does not track straight by itself but is easy to keep going straight and a skeg will make it track straight.
This totally gives anyone who hasnt experienced this kind of water, the actual "feel" of being picked up and shot forward by the peaks and troughs of the waves and the ride.
A great sea kayaking vid, straight to favourites and share.
straight to my favourites, great sea there and you's are obviously well experience kayakers, see the guy with the baseball cap cant of been tipped over yet, I was once out tipped by waves like that, rolled back tipped again immediatly rolled back then tipped a third time before I could get a breathe and had to bail out and I was on my own, scary stuff
You should make videos of you doing a beach landing, I have a sit on top kayak and after a long day fishing, if our gear isn't stored before making the beach landing we end up with a garage sale on the beach. Great video 5/5
1. You keep your bow straight, perpendicular to the wave face and the bow stays at the same depth or comes back up. Everything is fine.
2. You keep your bow straight but the bow continues to go down as the wave pushes the stern up and over in a forward boat sommersault. This is called perling.
3. You bow doesn't stay straight. The boat then turns sharply to one side or the other and becomes parallel to the wave face. What happens next depends on your bracing skills.
I paddled six miles in water like that and rougher, in Lake Huron off of Presque Harbor,Mi. That was a rush; then when you are by yourself its even worse. Dont try this at home...... Unless you know what you are doing. I wanted to grab my camera but it was to rough to grab it which was in arms reach. Paddled for 1hr&45mins straight. I had no choice. It was something else.
Looks like Nick Shade doing the paddling. The kayak looks like his Petrel design. It's a hand-build stripper. You can see his designs at guillemot kayak . com.

Love it!
I often play it as I am packing for a paddle on the sea, and even hum the music when the going gets exciting!
and now I am watching it, when I should really be unloading the kayak off the car and having a shower to wash the salt out my ears!

I'll be honest, burying my bow that much scares me! Is there a pretty strong tendency to roll while a big wave buries your bow like that?
caffeinecharged 3 years ago
When your bow gets buried it slows down while the stern comes up and continues to be pushed by the wave. Three things can happen then.

Is there ever a risk of penetrating a wave so deep you get kicked backwards like a cork? I have only ever kayaked rivers so I dunno.
