She must be about 72 y/o here. She looks great, sounds great, interprets pretty well, but the changes in lyrics are inexplicable. Not changes per se, but the specific changes upset the rhyme sequences which, in turn, fundamentally changes the Gestalt of the song.

This song is pretty damn amazing. I heard it first sung by Elaine Stritch, at Sondheim´s 80th birthday show. Well, it was mostly acted, because Stritch cannot sing as she used to anymore, but it worked. Because I liked it so much, I started to browse ”ze vast expanse” of YT and found it sung by Shirley and, needless to say, I got goose pimples. Basically it reminded me what a gifted vocalist and entertainer she is. I wish songwriters would write more material for that unbelievable voice of hers.

Jonas you are so right, she is unbeatable. And that is saying alot since fantastic vocalist like Barbra Streisand and Earth Kitt have done it. But Dame Shirley just inhabits a song like no other. I love how I can understand all of her lyrics.

Shirley did unfortunately not record this.

She sang it on a tv show in 2005, at a concert in 2006 and in London 2009 (this video).

I hope she will record this some time soon, she is still here!
