Your Wrong. Their was no instance of any SS officer either in the camps or in the Einsatzgruppen that was punished for refusing to kill Jews. It was common that any SS man was to be transferred to another duty or position in order to avoid the "Actions". It has been completely documented through numerous records that this was common. Any SS members that was in a camp or an SS action group and was involved in killing was a volunteer or assigned due to his willingness to kill.

Anyone who did not want to murder was allowed to transfer to other duties such as transport, guard duty, logistics etc.... Their was never, not one instance of an SS or Wehrmacht soldier executed or summarily punished for refusing to take part in the Actions. Their was "Peer Pressure" but no orders.

@scottiblasto Apparently, Solahutte is still there, but it is not under the umbrella of the Auschwitz memorial. Staff here believe it is privately maintained and not preserved as a Holocaust site. You can contact the Auschwitz memorial to get an exact address or driving directions. It's not part of the regular tour.

But, the SS considered Solahutte to be a subcamp of Auschwitz; as part of the larger system, it is correct to say that it was "within the grounds of Auschwitz." Our point is that the command staff themselves understood it to be part of the complex.

My wife's brother in law was frenchman who passed all war yrs in Morocco, & in 1945 went to France & Germany to see his friends from before war, some were nazi, many had died or where ill. He could also go to the concentration camps, more than three of them, and saw with his own eyes how the nazis had murdered hundreds of thousand of jews just in Germany. He told me: I saw the ovens with my own eyes. Just once or twice the told me about that, and his eyes full tears. Its a shame it was true.

Prison guards always have a good time, after all, they aren't the prisoners. And they are getting paid for their time. Prisoners are not. Its the same in US prisons. I've been inside both what's left of concentration camps in Germany, and US prisons, and there is not a whole lot of difference. The only difference are the US prisons use more modern material and razor wire in addition to barb wire. Same barracks, mess halls, same double barrier electric fence with strike line not to cross.

@DeadOriginal I think it's because the holocaust was the most extensive and horrific example of organized genocide, well... ever. The things going on in Africa etc today are horrible, yes, but more barbaric rather than as systematic and calculated as the holocaust was. Apparently, "SS Hütte Porabka (Solahütte)", still exists. I found a nice color pic of the place that appears to be the cottage where the SS people are recreating in the Hocker album. Unfortunately YouTube doesn't allow the posting of links. The caption under the pic reads "View towards the main building of the SS recreation area. The area is still used as a holiday camp." Your Wrong. Their was no instance of any SS officer either in the camps or in the Einsatzgruppen that was punished for refusing to kill Jews. It was common that any SS man was to be transferred to another duty or position in order to avoid the "Actions". It has been completely documented through numerous records that this was common. Any SS members that was in a camp or an SS action group and was involved in killing was a volunteer or assigned due to his willingness to kill.

@martynrobin121 Yes. The SS, Einsatzgruppen and the Reserve Police who carried out executions and killings were never forced or "Ordered" to kill the victims. These groups were volunteer. Anyone who did not want to murder was allowed to transfer to other duties such as transport, guard duty, logistics etc.... Their was never, not one instance of an SS or Wehrmacht soldier executed or summarily punished for refusing to take part in the Actions. Their was "Peer Pressure" but no orders.

In that order he said any soldier who wished to transfer would be transferred " For other work back home". Every Einsatz group commander personally told each soldier that any soldier unfit for the performance of these duties was transfered back to Germany. Their are numerous cases of this happening. @scottiblasto Apparently, Solahutte is still there, but it is not under the umbrella of the Auschwitz memorial. Staff here believe it is privately maintained and not preserved as a Holocaust site. You can contact the Auschwitz memorial to get an exact address or driving directions. It's not part of the regular tour.

@dke388209 Thank you for sharing your concerns. It is true that people unfamiliar with the vastness of the Auschwitz complex may misunderstand the position of Solahutte to the sites of mass killing. But, the SS considered Solahutte to be a subcamp of Auschwitz; as part of the larger system, it is correct to say that it was "within the grounds of Auschwitz." Our point is that the command staff themselves understood it to be part of the complex.

The Russians roles were more complex than simple descriptions. Two things that can not be ignored are as follows: The Russians suffered more at the hands of the Germans than any other people; the Russians, alone, likely contributed about 50% of the forces & determination needed to defeat Hitler & the Germans, in 1945. It goes without saying, that Stalin killed more Russians than Hitler... just like Mao killed more Chinese than the Japanese. But that's for the Russians & Chinese to say/judge.

But so what?, during the late 1930s, Hitler was so powerful, most would rather sign concessionary agreements with him, either be "neutral" like Switzerland (which was NEVER neutral: its "neutrality" was "observed" under Hitler's discretion) or be a "friend" of his outright, & that included Russia, many in England, likely half of the French, and most Italians...

First of all they did NOT collaborate with Hitler, other than signing a non-aggression pact which both sides knew damn well wouldn't last. Stalin hoped that France and Britain would give the Germans hell on the western front like in WWI, and then when Germany was exhausted after narrowly winning it, his Red Army would roll over them. Unfortunately France fell in a few weeks and Hitler attacked the USSR sooner than expected in 1941, whereas Stalin thought '42 at earliest.

Listen up. Many of those Balts were one of the most willing Nazi collaborators during the war. In countries like Lithuania the jews were wiped out with the help of the locals. Those were far from innocent. After the war was won the USSR made sure the traitors like their own "Russian Liberation Army" (Nazi collaborators), Cossacks and others who had betrayed the motherland or assisted its enemies got a ticket to Siberia. Although some were innocent most were NOT.

My wife's brother in law was frenchman who passed all war yrs in Morocco, & in 1945 went to France & Germany to see his friends from before war, some were nazi, many had died or where ill. He could also go to the concentration camps, more than three of them, and saw with his own eyes how the nazis had murdered hundreds of thousand of jews just in Germany. He told me: I saw the ovens with my own eyes. Just once or twice the told me about that, and his eyes full tears. Its a shame it was true.

When WW2 began,America was on its knees but by wars end they emerged the richest and most powerful nation on earth,a mantle they took from Britain,who btw are the only nation the US kept in debt.The Brits lost their empire and the US was going to make sure they didnt get it back.

I was talking to my jewish friends the other day when the conversation turned to the holocaust.
After listening to their views and personal stories of parents and so on,I thought I would use the opportunity to enlighten them that my grandfather had died in Auschwitz.
Their initial heartfelt sorrow and empathy soon soured when one of them asked me how he died.

Prison guards always have a good time, after all, they aren't the prisoners. And they are getting paid for their time. Prisoners are not. Its the same in US prisons. I've been inside both what's left of concentration camps in Germany, and US prisons, and there is not a whole lot of difference. The only difference are the US prisons use more modern material and razor wire in addition to barb wire. Same barracks, mess halls, same double barrier electric fence with strike line not to cross.

The things going on in Africa etc today are horrible, yes, but more barbaric rather than as systematic and calculated as the holocaust was. Also, there are are so many photographs, documents and videos of it that it's difficult for it to not have a great emotional impact on people.

They were PEOPLE who did terrible things, not monsters acting out of some genetic code of evil. It is much more interesting to analyze WHY they did what they did? What were their personal reasons for being a part of the killing machine? Did they believe in the Jewish conspiracy? Some certainly did. Many SS men (including Höss) have testified that they didn't just obey orders. They actually thought the extermination process was necessary in order to preserve the German people in the future.

Paul Rassinier was forcibly kept at Buchenwald and one other camp and testified that nothing ever happened which even resembled what the jews claimed. The tiny tattoos were applied to prevent identity theft and provide the best possible medical care without any harmful identification mistakes. "The Final Solution" was not about jews but was the German plan to resolve all of the different territorial disputes to try to make peace. Possibly not even 100,000 jews died during entire WW2.
