  • the first lion was silent like the movies were then..

  • "Samson Versus The Lion"

    This time, the LION won!

  • looks like the lion's footage was already taped! (later variants would show it polished)

  • Lion appears before ribboning :)

  • Stupid Question:

where is leo the lion right now?

since leo was the longest lived lion on mgm studio:

does it mean he is still alive in america or did he just died in the 1995?

im still confused about the mgm lions' life like tanner, coffe, jackie and others one.

the only thing i know who died already, was slats the first lion on mgm (1916 - 1924).

  • I hate the fact that a respected company like MGM is facing bankruptcy now.

  • @guy2008rules

Most of the movie houses have gone bankrupt and have been bought and sold several times over. MGM will more than likely come out of bankruptcy by it's current owners or be bought again and continue with the MGM name.

  • @guy2008rules i think is the last roar

  • I found 1958 film "Gigi"

  • Of all the lions roars that MGM did, I think that this one is the original roar. I sure wish I could get my first car back, a 1967 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, 2 door and have Leo's roar as the horn.

  • @hilesmith Actually, I'd like to have Leo's roar on my alarm clock.

  • Director: Come on, Leo! Back to work, theres another movie to be done!

Leo: Were here now! Roar, roar, roar, roar!

  • Comment removed

  • Did they use Tanner's voice samples during 1957-1982? Leo's roar sounded like Tanner during this time.

  • lol i like how people can tell which lion it sounds like...skills. i video taped my dog yawning and set it to a lion sound so that it could kinda look like the MGM logo. lol. i freakin' love the MGM logo.

  • He sounds like Tanner.

  • That's because it IS Tanner's roar!

  • The real MGM lion's roar is supposely in some of Gene Deitch's T&J cartoons.

  • Been knew that.

  • Talk about cheesiness. Leo's area shook at 0:06-0:08 and Leo also fades in earlier and then fades out later when the other on-screen graphics do so!

  • Classic MGM.

  • Yeah. That was leo the lion!

  • this cannot be the first logo ever made the quality and graphics are great!

  • Actually, what the uploader meant by "1st logo" was that it was the first logo with the current lion used in MGM films today. They used different lions prior to this logo.

  • its unbelievable but the first logo they used was the one they used in 1916

  • He roared three times.

  • CUT !!

Lion must make louder roars !

  • whenever i see it, it scares the hell out of me

  • Hey, you re-edited it. Check out at the lion. See some snow?

  • I know what he did. He shot the lion from a TV set from the inside and he composited it with a still background. Nice!

  • was he unmaned on 1961's openings?

  • Yes, his mane was cut. When he was 3, he appeared in this variation. This lion got a haircut. The 1st roar is that he bellowed.

  • ART FOR ART'S SAKE!!!

  • ROOOOOOOAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRR!

  • It's the long version of the 1959 MGM Logo. A roaring lion effect was made in 1936, but it was late 1953.

  • Nice logo! Please don't remove this logo!

  • That logo was taken from the ending of "That's Entertainment 2" with the extended roar.

  • I never understood the picture below the lion. The red guy thing with the heart-shaped mouth. What's that supposed to represent?

  • it was originally in The Goldwyn pictures logo could mean somethin to do with American Indians? lol

  • that's a drama mask, for those who are stupid

  • oh yeah now that you mention it, it does look like a drama mask, dont know how didnt notice that lol

  • He's tired. He wants a nap.

  • This Logo Was From 1957-1982.

  • To tell you the truth, this 3 lion roar version ended in 1960.

  • Yep. Except it was cut down to 2 roars in 1960.

  • This was after Bob the Lion got replaced by Leo which would be the modern lion of MGM.

  • I always wanted to know how Leo's 3 roars sound like. If MGM can bring it back with Leo's roar instead of Jackie II's

  • I was talking about how Leo's 3 roars would sound with the current lion roar instead of Jackie II's.

  • Don't you mean 1957?

  • This is definately not the first MGM logo. This one is derived from the 50's. :)

  • 1953

  • This isn't actually the 1st... But thanks for posting the full version, anyway!

  • I am collecting big studio logos -- I see you like classic mgm

  • thanks for posting -- I hadn't realized how many different versions there had been over time

  • I had this on Cat on the Hot Tin Roof.
