"There are two great teams in Liverpool...Liverpool and Liverpool Reserves" Bill Shankly 1913-1981
As I Scotsman and a Man Utd fan Fan I see Shankly as a hero. I lived in Manchester from the age of 11 to 17 and he's right, you do feel more Scottish when away from home.
Most Man Utd and Liverpool fans, the ones who know their football, do have a respect for each others club whilst maintaining the fierce rivalry, because unlike other clubs they both have a strong and honourable history. Busby and Shankly are greats.
As is Alec Ferguson, who is the last of the Scottish managers to have come through Scottish Industry. Stein,Busby, Shankly and Ferguson All share that background and it made them the men they became and have come. I must admit though, I believe Ferguson and Shankly are the most alike out of that four and the most entertaining to listen to.
Not just a British football legend, a British legend up there with the best from these islands, a true gent, never forgot his roots, top man.....RIP.....leeds fan
Hearing Shanks talk about the players who are paid big bucks and do not dedicate themselves on the field gives an accurate insight about the repugnant Torres move towards Chelsea. Torres embarrased himself, his past and the hard work he did in Anfield. A shameful moment indeed, for Fernando and for football itself.
these old timers had some integrity and respect. there was a certain essence and era that came to life when they were seen or heard. today the game is a fucking joke, its not even a sport. it's a bloody business and teams flash of their filthy money to gain players or better yet prostitutes. it's players like gerrard and giggs that i admire. forget these pricks like ronaldo who are simply here to make a name . and fergie? is he fuck one of the greatests. Shankly and Busby
Shankly died before I was born, so maybe I don't know what I'm talking about, but from what I have seen and read, football has just changed so much since his day. If a manager these days said something like "your knee? It's Liverpool's knee!", "Football is much, much more important than life and death" and "there are only 2 teams in Liverpool - Liverpool and Liverpool reserves" they would get linched by fans, pundits and papers alike...
Business plan of modern FA = death to free speech!
@20cFilmWannabe he's a bit like Mourinho. not afraid to express himself or be passionate. that sought of confidence transmits itself through the team if your man management skills are also good enough.
idont remember where i was when jfk got shot ,to be honest i didnt really care, dito when ghandi died ,dito nor do i when other so called earth shattering events happened ,BUTI DO REMEMBER WHERE I WAS WHEN MR SHANKLY SADLY PASSED AWAY,and i still miss the man liverpool still miss him lfc need him,if only,i agree wholeheartedly with mikemidges comments,i have been in the presence of a messiah as a youngster stood on the kop all those years ago no doubt bills up there organising, gods back four
quote - "Some people believe football is a matter of life and death, I am very disappointed with that attitude. I can assure you it is much, much more important than that." Real <3 for Liverpool!
Shame liverpool football club treated him like shit after he left. In his own words ''after i left liverpool i was more welcome at everton than i was at liverpool, i suppose you could say they are my team now'' Disgraceful treatment of a very talented man. Shame on you LFC.
Not entirely true. Up to that point they had still won the title more than United. They were a sleeping giant. Shankly was the catalyst but more than anything, it was his charisma which enthralled people and it still does.
its funny listening 2 the first thing he says bout throwing someone in jail coz there a menace for not bothering there arses if shankly was alive today i wonder what he would make of berbatov or robinhos performace for city against everton last week he would probably lock them up and throw away the key if he could
Now i'm a MUFC fan but regardless of team difference, Bill Shankly is one of the football greats.
And the so called "fans" of football who say such disgusting troll like behaviour with poor typing skills i might add, they are not fans of football, they probably don't even know the history of football of their chosen club, so go home little boys, go home to mummy and daddy and drink your cheap £1 lagers.

what are the fuck are you going on about the club is fuckd the manger is the last of are worrys shankly would not stand a chance modern football fans now .
He would be perfect now. Players would jump at the chance to play for him. He had more charism in his little toe than anyone you've met in your whole life. He wouldn't need superstars because the players would do there best for him.
rimmerscott ,Did mourinho win the champions league with money or his ability?!Everyone says he won with roman's money but he could handle the big stars with big egos well.Rafa couldn,t.Money isn't everything, passion is.
@wrkingclass, fair enough he done great things at porto aswell but rafa done that at valencia, foreign football is has a lot of big differences to english football. he did handle the big stars well and thats why he is different to rafa who has poor man managment. im not saying murinho is a bad manager hes 1 of the best around im just saying i dont think he is right for liverpool.
havn't ye not learned about bragging b4 the fat lady sings?.Liverpool can offer far more than what villa could ever possibly hope 2 offer.tell ya what mate come back to me at the end of the season!.
Taking a risk is what liverpool have to do.People said eric cantona was a bad egg, didn't fergie take the risk.THE REST WAS HISTORY.Rafa is guaranteeing 4 place, that muppet. He has lost it .He's not worth a carrot!HE HAS LOST THE DRESSING ROOM.HE"S GIVING EXCUSES JUST LIKE HOULLIER.We fielded our best team and still lost to arsenal(a bunch of kids) which had no van persie bendtner, eduardo. Now is not too late.GET MOURINHO BEFORE MANCS DO.A tactician without strategy is a loser without direction.
wrking class you're absolutely right with your ever tolerant quote. I was at the game on sunday nd after loosing 1-2 our unbelievably loyal supporters clapped the team off the field even though this team is not worthy of US TRUE fans!. this in contrast to the chelsea supporters who's team is top of the league, in champions nd challenging for every other cup in england booed their team off..ye should be ashamed. What an Honour it was to have stood in the Kop with the Best fans in the World!..LFC
Oh yeh? You know he was offered the Leeds job while at Leicester when they were a Champions League side and he turned them down. Now what can you possibly offer MON that Villa can't?
murinho won the prem fair enough but he had no wage limit or transfer budget yet rafas tactics showed him up in the champs league 2 year sin a row, ask yourself could murinho cope on less than 30 million a season to spend ??? and as for o'neill hes a good manager but could he crack it at the big time ??? but your right in saying that rafa isnt the answer
We need a man of passion,a great motivator,a great communicator,a spokesman and defender of his team,a man who knows how to win and plays to win.A coach who thinks of only winning and inspires his team to play with their hearts.Has control of the dressing room(respect of his players).RAFA ISN"T THE MAN,MOURINHO IS! SAVE THIS GREAT TEAM FROM MEDIOCRITY!HELP GERRARD WIN THE ELUSIVE PREMERSHIP!REWARD THE EVER FAITHFUL,TOLERANT LIVERPOOL FANS.
Hope EVERYONE from the boardroom to the pitch especially the ones that play on the pitch are bloody listening to this. The working class have always had INTEGRITY and JUSTICE and DETERMINATION within themselves. They work hard for the money they are paid and know enough about money to believe that it doen't rule us and our decisions in life.
he took us over in a much worse position, and just got on with it, so why say that? we have been in much worse positions, we will improve. this is just the storm before the golden sky
Off course its a secret, you think man utd fans go around broadcasting that before sir matt joined them, he not only played for but also captained maybe their biggest rivals ? I wouldn't want anyone else to know. Busby is not associated with LFC because so few know.
I suppose it depends on how old you are, who you support & how well you know the history of the game.
The best kept secret in football is that sir matt busby played for and even captained LFC just before he joined Man Utd. I think that could shock some people but its a fact.

Ferguson is the most succesful Scottish manager of all time. Won the European Cup WInners Cup with Aberdeen. Restored Man Utd, won 2 European Cups and umpteen league titles. I am in no way detracting from the other great managers but to claim these guys are 10 times better is simply ludicrous.
Shankly is a great manager. OK, he didn't win as much as ferguson, but he didn't win as much as Bob Paisley either, but no-one in Liverpool says that Paisley was a better manager than Shankly.
By the way, in both European Cup finals that Ferguson won, he was very lucky. A week ago a novice manager, Pep Guardiola, showed him how to win a cup final in style.
look at the money ferguson has had to spend took him 5 years for league, shanks took charge of us when we had no money, a ground that was terrible n wanted fixing, a training ground that was the worst in country. he transformed this spent the litle money he did have on what would become ledgendary players and took us from the second division to the best side in the country and set the foundations the most successful manager of all time bob paisley who won more than ferguson in half the time.
Well said, I'm sick of the praise Mourino, fergie and the likes get, all they do is manage at rich clubs with top flight players. Shankly built his team, he didn't buy it, I'd love to see fergie or mourino take a Colchester or a Hartlepool and turn them into league champions. Best 5 managers ever, Shankly, Clough, Paisley, Revie and Jock Stein
@seachtaine, i wouldnt go for anybody untill the season is over, i cant see who would be right for liverpool in are current situation, we need somebody who understands the english game and knows that to win the prem you need to play posotively not 4-5-1 at home against wigan, every manager has is bad parts and dalglish does to but id see him as a ideal replacment wether or not he would take the job is another thing
A true great, they dared call fowler god, my arse. This man made the game along with Busby and Revie. There arent the words or vocabulary available to decribe how great this man was, Pity the game has become such shite
The first 25 seconds should be shown to the team after that disgraceful performance against Bolton today!

Well said, I'm sick of the praise Mourino, fergie and the likes get, all they do is manage at rich clubs with top flight players. Shankly built his team, he didn't buy it, I'd love to see fergie or mourino take a Colchester or a Hartlepool and turn them into league champions. Best 5 managers ever, Shankly, Clough, Paisley, Revie and Jock Stein

who would you go for???
seachtaine 2 years ago
@seachtaine, i wouldnt go for anybody untill the season is over, i cant see who would be right for liverpool in are current situation, we need somebody who understands the english game and knows that to win the prem you need to play posotively not 4-5-1 at home against wigan, every manager has is bad parts and dalglish does to but id see him as a ideal replacment wether or not he would take the job is another thing

bill shankly, matt busby, brian clough and bob paisley are 10x as good as alex ferguson the glory hunter.
