This series came out when i was only 13 years old. I lived on a farm and didn't have tv. ( my mother's choice) as a result, I spent a lot of time inside my own imagination. Now, years later, my kids have almost all grown, I still spend hours in my own little world. I watched the original Battlestar Galactica on Netflix and I fell head over heels in love with Apollo. Who can resist such a strong, caring, gentle and wise man? Oh, and handsome. Thankyou Richard, for being Apollo. I love you. :)
Clean as in better quality, or as in no cuss words?
As for quality, this is as good as it gets. Its a 6th generation bootleg at least, and was 20 years old even when I bought it. As for cuss words, the bleeps were added by ME, as in the original cut you hear the profanity loud and clear. Dont want to remove that flavor.
I remember seeing this for sale at sci-fi conventions in the 90s. They SAME guy from NY was selling them at all the shows and wanted 20 bucks for a 30 generation dub on a VHS that is so far gone the tracking adjustment is useless. Looks like you bought one lol. Seriously, why didn't they include these on the DVDS? I suppose the same reason Lucas will not include the Holiday Special on the upcoming Blu-rays.
This looks about 5-6th generation. My tracking still works ;) Most of the degradation is due to that this was likely 20 years old before it was even transferred to video.
Lucas considers the Holiday Special to be an embarrassment, and he's right. I wouldnt equate these two works.
EXCELLENT piece of Nostalgia! THANKS for the post! I can imagine this being played before the cast while they awaited news about a next season... I wish I could have been there. I don't know how you obtained this but it's a piece of gold.
You should have seen the video I uploaded it from. ;)
This was never meant to be seen by the public, it was a private movie that then sat on a shelf for 20 years. We're lucky to have any version of it to watch, let alone a poor quality one.
@SpeakerForBoskone I enjoyed it. I think kids today are so spoiled by good quality that they can't watch or understand the value of lost pieces like this.
Damn, I remeber the scenes with the hands crushing and messing up the letters on the Universal Pictures Globe! What movie is that from? Something to do with Mel brooks perhaps? Maybe the Last Remake of Beau Geste? Help me out!
At least in this version the colonists use blaster style weapons that probably focus a charged particle beam. In the new version, they use shell-encased ballistic slug throwing weapons! If the enemy is a mechanical framework then bullets would certainly not be very effective, so WTF?
Did you see Arnold Schwatzenpeger in the "Terminator" movies? Effectively the endo-frame was impervious to lead and copper jacket ballistic slugs. This is very likely to be the effect that bullets would have on a hardened enemy like the mechanical "Cylons" depicted in the beginning of the B.G. serial. Much later, in "Galactica 1980" the producers replaced the metallic opponents with more humanoid ones. this does not retrogress to the initial mecha format to justify the use of slug throwing guns!
Deadly serious. You didnt know? Us classic fans were tickled that the original Captain Apollo got have have so big a role, even many shared scenes with the new Apollo.
I wish they'd show the bit from the pilot where the lights in a building on Caprica spelled out " F**K OFF " It's a gag that a SFX designer put in.
I liked the original Galactica, but too many story lines could be summed up in 1 45 - minute episode, just like with Star Trek: TOS. RDM's Galactica wasn't so neat & cut - & - dried.
Now that RDM's is over, I'm finding myself thinking "so what?" I didnt like the ending, didnt like the general storythread, and was subconsciously wishing the entire time for a real meat and potatoes Battlestar story.
Having the episodic format instead of the serialized had its advantages, mainly that the writers couldnt get away with weeks of filler while building up to the ONE fight scene of the season in the season ender.
Whatever floats your Battlestar & / or Viper. I found elements to like in the original Galactica & in the re - make of BSG, the re - make was about the characters, not about space fights & strange gadgets & guys in chromium suits.
I DID like the old Baltar who was a genuine stone - cold Mother- frakker of a villain. Gaius Baltar was merely a
( suave ) nerd who let his glands lead him into giving away Colonial defense secrets & betraying the Colonies for a piece of hot Cylon tail.
You're thinking Trek. BG was never about the gadgets.
And "space fights" can be a reason all to itself. I LIKED the space fights. What I DONT like is being smothered in "character" because the writer thinks he's being clever. RDM BG had way too much as far as Im concerned. It took away time better spent on story, which is the whole reason the characters were there.
I'm not really knocking EITHER series, the original BSG was big on action, space disasters, fights, etc.
& of course the re - imagined version had character development & story arcs. The " new " BSG had continuity, & situations that couldn't be confined to a single episode, & comparisons to 9 / 11 here.
But the original DID use a lot of ideas taken from Star Wars, maybe Trek, perhaps Lost in Space. NOT dissing it, just making an observation.
There wasnt so much 70's after the haircuts. The pilot had a trio of disco divas but they were never seen again. The show has actually aged rather well. Compare it to other 70s shows such as SPACE 1999, which used disco music for its opening credits. :/ Even this show didnt do that.
I stand corrected. I mistyped Cobalt. I thought it was Cobol. I'd never seen it written. Either way, I was wrong.
Besides, a show that uses microns (an Earth distance measurement (1/10 of a millimeter)) as a measurement of time (on the Galactica ~1 second) and names characters after Greek Gods, etc. why would you think it's strange they named it Cobol (or Cobalt for that matter).
Everyone likes to rag on the original BSG as "cheesy," "poorly-executed," among other things. What they never say is HOW the original BSG fits those descriptors they throw at it with very little thought involved? I'm a fan of the original BSG and I've never seen anything cheesy or "wrong" about it.
The new BSG isn't even BSG. They completely changed the premise...the Cylons are NOT human technology gone bad, they are the artifacts of a long-dead alien civilization.
It's only the entire POINT of the original series...it would be like rewriting, say, Harry Potter...but making the wizards all elves with humans as pets.
I agree. But if she is in her late forties now, that means she shot BG when she was a teenager. Sorry. Shes gotta be more like mid fifties or even (yikes) 60's. You had to be alive in this era to appreciate what it was. It was a different time and a different capability of television. At a budget of a million bucks a show, it was the most expensive show to make. Hell, now thats a salary for one of the FRIENDS cast.
Merren Jensen is the most beautiful woman that has ever lived on planet Earth! Gods! She must be in her late forties by now. I wonder if she still looks good?
Very funny clips. When I was a teenager I was a fan of the original BATTLESTAR GALACTICA but even back then I was mature enough to realize that it was a wonderful idea that was horribly executed. Despite its gross flaws this show struck a cord with me and a lot of other people that eventually led to the sublime remake we have today.
The thing I find funniest about this show is the fact that they blew their budget on effects pretty early on so were forced to use sets from Westerns and Medieval films.

BRAVO!!! Love those wrap party reels. Especially from the shows from the 70's. Those days the outtakes ended up in the garbage, now I think everything is kept to put on the DVDs.
Well why did you bother to watch in the first place if you werent a BG fan? And even if you are, how much quality do you expect out of 30 year old analog? Check the attitude at the door buddy, you'll find its not welcome here.

If he's the moron Olaf, why are you the one making an ass of yourself? ;) No one is making you watch. Feel free to stay away.
