Korean 차 means "car, taxi, bus, train, etc." But 자동차 means only "(motor) car or automobile." In addition, 차 sometimes means "tea." (as a homonym) Anyway, you can use "차" instead of "자동차".

I have a question! :)
In dramas (my most favorite learning resource.) I hear car as 자. Is that a more informal way of saying 자동차?

Wow! What a fast reply! :) Thank you for the explanation. So it would be safe to translate 차 as vehicle?
