  • please remember how loyal your Pug Olive was to you,and try to return the favor to her.Best of luck and God Bless.

  • thank you for highlighting the fundamental animal welfare problems with extreme/over-typing in some pet-breeds. that people make animals suffer like this - for noting more than a warped sense of aesthetics is deplorable. the people that breed these over-typed dogs and the judges/clubs that reward these unhealthy dogs are irresponsible to say the least and the denial of any problems is just infuriating and very counter productive. the most sad thing is that the animals pay the price for it.

  • I just love the notion that somehow it is so much more awful to film a dog with seizures than it is to keep breeding them. There are NO reputable Pug breeders that I have found. @supasoundpugs please let me have details of some and I will happily check them out.

  • I hope olive is still doing ok, my pug hoshi did not. She only lived to see 6 months! This is a problem with bad breeding. PDE took my little girl away, she acted the same as olive.

  • I have removed my self from the kennel club as a breeder of German Shepherds as they do not care about dogs they care about money. They do not accept Schutzhund Sport or French Ring sport titles but good citizen is printed on progeny papers woopy doo. They do not print European hip scores. They all pat each other on the back while turning dogs into freaks, working ability and health first there is no ugly good working dog, my beloved breed has suffered greatly by the conformation ring breeder.

  • Olive

Can you tell us what changes and improvements the KC and pug breed clubs have instigated in the six months since this video was posted?

  • supersound pugs i do not understand your attack on this person, may be you should get the man or woman who bred this dog on here to defend herself/himself,olive 4774 is not attacking anyone, just highlightening the problems with her dogs, maybe you should put some of your healthy pugs up on here and tell us all how you have been lucky and never had a pug with hereditry health problems

  • supersoundpugs. Please tell me what lies? As for court, do you mean the small claims? What is the point? For money? Will money cure my dog? You are likening my dog to a broken product. Should I have part exchanged her? This just highlights the need for secondary legislation under the Animal Welfare Act to protect dogs like Olive and more being born like her, so thank you for allowing me to point that out.

  • @olive4774 How could you stand there filming this poor soul suffering, when you should have been caring for her and making her comfotable disgusting behaviour for a so called dog lover.

  • @incasmom1Christine, as explained before it was done for the vets to see. To answer the other questions; Blood tests were negative; She is from EASTONITE show breeders. Her parents were HV negative, but this doesn't guarantee the offspring will not develop the condition. Born in 2003 so the susceptibility test for PDE didn't exist, but if anyone knows anything about PDE, they would know that Olive would be dead by now. What do brachycephalic breeders do with pups that have "the wrong shape head"

  • from information that I have received and its a very reliable source you were given the chance to get help from the breeder and you refused it so stop lying - and in this day and age all you had to do (if the latter wasnt true) was take the breeder to court - but you choose not to

  • @supersoundpugs what support?

  • @supersoundpugs firstly, after dealing with the uks top vets i can tell you now they will ask you to film your dogs problems, especially fitting,as it tells them or at least tries to point them in the right direction, olive is not a bad pug owner for filming this, she is doing what her vet told her to,and by sharing this here it shows others what can happen, also when a pug is fitting, there is nothing you can do and if you do interveane you can cause more damage

  • II have it on great authority and I think people ought to know that the breeder actually offered full support to you and you refused it - stop trying to cause trouble

  • @supersoundpugs what support? Have I missed something?

  • @supersoundpugs Your astonishing attack, totally uncalled for, on a really caring pet owner has been made because?

Perhaps supersoundpugs you could share with us some footage of your super sound pugs.

  • supersoundpugs, the top vets in the country advise you to film your dog so they can have a more clearer view when it comes for them to diagnose the problem, obviously by your name you think pugs are supersound lets hope you never have one that is ill or suffers, plus by filming it and putting it on here,it helps others to see if it like their pugs fits, oh and you say by standing there and filming, if you ad any idea about pug fits, you would know there is nothing you can do to help whilst fitting

  • you ought to be ashamed of yourself standing and videoing this pug having a fit - you are not fit to be an owner of a pug

  • @supersoundpugs thank you for showing your lack of knowledge when it comes to veterinary diagnosis.

  • @supersoundpugs Be ashamed of videoing a sick pug! Really. As opposed to breeding them. Please get your priorties right. You would be better off directing your energy /anger at the breeders who persist in breeding them rather than the poor pet owners who are left picking up the pieces.

  • @dorothysdog completely agree, well said, why she is attacking this person i do not know,i wonder what she would do if the tables were turned

  • Your poor baby, My Pugs had problems too. He was health tested though, so were the parents. THe breeders Judge and show at crufts and the father won best of breed Pug in 2010 at crufts. It makes me sad how highly bred these dogs are. My pug had to have his nares resized and hes been having seizures every 2-3 months since i bought him and the last two were only two weeks apart. Hell stiffen and cry out and pee and poo hes jsut had his fifth one yesterday. Its so sad.. My dogs not evena year old!

  • well do not say "this dog" plz... its a living being and deserves respect... i love you for having him and taking good care of this special angel... but unfortunately ppl takes some rules for "mankind" but not for the other living beings... so its okay to be mean and cruel to other species... sad... =/

  • I'm sorry but you can not blame the breeders only,as long as there is demand

for idiotic "designer breeds" you can be certain that there will be problems of

    this nature.Poor dogs.

  • I like how you blame the breeder. You bought an inbred dog, that's what breeders DO. How about you guys just pick up a rescued dog?

  • I will next time!

However, sadly you'll never stop breeding of pedigree/purebred dogs.

What happens if one turns up in a rescue? Euthanase because they are a pure bred pedigree dog????

  • Who has blamed the breeder? Unless I have missed something I assumed the emphasis was on the lack of health testing?

  • i pick dogs out of street... i love every dog, i dont see breeds i see living beings... they need our help, we destroyed their enviroment and they became dependant to humans... its our fault...

  • This is not a personal name and shame campaign.

Olive's breeders lines are found throughout many pug pedigrees.

The gene pool is apparently overall quite small, and I know of other poorly pugs from completely different breeders.

Many of her problems are genetic, but also down to her general conformation, something Ive now learnt needs desperate change.

For example, the brachycephalic obstructive airway sydrome is due to the flatness of their faces and is a progressive illness.

  • Why you no put the name of the breeder, and the pedigree of the dog?

If i have this dog, i tell everybody the name of the breeder and the pedigree too.

  • Breeders of German Shepherd Dogs have been asking the Kennel Club to make health test for breeding stock mandatory for years but they refuse. Why.......

  • Thank god Olive has a owner such as you.

And the reply from the KC is nothing short of insulting. The AB scheme is nothing but a piece of paper, The breeder of Olive could be Accredited for x number of pounds a year, how does this help dogs such as Olive. Without making testing compolsory

  • Olive is truly beautiful, and lucky that she has very loving, caring owners.

If the KC made health checks compulsory, worried about the poor souls that are used as breeding machines, and the health of all the poor, sickly pups that are churned out by puppy farms and back yard breeders, then I will start to give them some respect. Until then, no chance.

  • KC"If we were to get really tough & just refuse to register puppies then those people will still breed dogs and be outside of any positive influence whatsoever."

You have no positive influence now so why accept the money from breeders like Olive's breeder? Kc reg seems worthless.

  • kennel club should have health tests done onall breeds exspacially pugs bulldogs i do really feel for your pug i hope he will have no more problems with his life i really do wish you luck so much i cant stand breeders that inbreed there dogs i made sure that there was no inbreeding in my dogs lines as we show them so we want to show how they should look GOOD LUCK just a question i used to have standerd poodle and he had no health problems exspect that he had cancer when he was 12 and that was it

  • roxieschihuahuas, my pics at the beginning of the video were just a selection of doggies I saw at Crufts on my visit.

Well done for being a good and responsible breeder

  • I think the problem is that they are too broad based - fundamental changes in breeding practices are required. There are, even under the current standard, healthy Pugs. Persuadng breeders to change is a very long term task - another two or three genrations are needed (of breeders - not of dog). As I have said on many occasions, it is not rocket science and these probelms could be solved quickly given the will - unfortunately it is so often not there - in this and in other breeds too

  • Thnak you for sharing this with us Kate. The comments have been sensible too, I know you have brought this breeder to the attention of the Kennel Club and I am disappointed that they have not responded to you personally. What they say above is, of course, true but it would have been helpful to explain why so little progress is being made in addressing these specific problems in the Pug .

  • Hear hear.

  • We have introduced the Accredited Breeder Scheme precisely to work exactly towards the position you want; where everyone health tests their breeding stock. Our intention & hope is that by moving in that way, well also encourage the public to demand the right tests and thus persuade breeders to carry them out. Well then be able to confidently make them compulsory for the remaining breeders, without forcing a large number of them to go off & work completely outside the KC registration system.

  • @thekennelclub The trouble is WHO checks the accredited breeder. I know of one pug breeder who should not be on the list .

  • There is another factor that you need to consider, you are aware that there has been widespread criticism of the genetic diversity that exists in some breeds. We need to be careful that we do not bring in restrictions that exclude large numbers of dogs from the breeding pool and each issue and breed must be dealt with on its own merit. The secret is to educate the breeders and the public and ensure that health results are both sought and indeed acted on.

  • Registration with the Kennel Club is voluntary; we have no legal powers and cant force people to register their dogs with us & come under our control & regulation. If we were to get really tough & just refuse to register puppies then those people will still breed dogs and be outside of any positive influence whatsoever. We would lose touch completely with all the owners & breeders & have no opportunity to persuade them about such things as responsible breeding and health testing in the future.

  • What is the KC's positive influence exactly? Under the 137 years of your jurisdiction which breeds have actually improved?

What health tests are you encouraging pug breeders to utilise?

  • @thekennelclub

You not having much influence full stop, And by not making health test compulsory you are endorsing bad breeding..there is no distinction between good and bad

  • Yes well done on you for being generous enought to share Olives story, that we all might learn. And for clearly loving and caring for your girl as you do. If only there was a magic wand to this solution, but until people can really SEE what is happening, then it will remain a long and painfull road, for many dogs and owners. THank you for sharing and hugs to you and Olive.

  • Olive is absolutely beautiful and as we can tell she is very well loved. Personally I feel that every puppies parentage should be health-checked before the KC even consider registration, but I suppose their accountants would argue otherwise. Good luck to Olive and her family for the future xx

  • When will this suffering end ? How disgusting that someone can make money from such misery . Shame on them.

  • Than you for your kind comments.

Despite what Olive has been through, she has a good quality of life and is a much loved happy little dog.

  • There is a lot of work to be done. Shame on those who try and dismiss the scale of the problem. Shame on them.

  • You cannot watch this without crying. It makes me so sad. But thank you for posting this. We all wish Olive well. As well as can be expected that is, given the genetic and conformational material from which she is made.

At least she has a very loving and dedicated home.
