  • So apparently when a movie decides to teach something new, whether it be about a country, it's culture, or even people's struggles, that's a bad thing? im so confused by that.

  • most of the cast of this film are not actors but Fellow Madrid inhabitants. they live this everyday.

  • i'm not sure if rotten tomatoes reads this comment section on youtube, but these two came off really ignorant. 'bad hair day', 'the slums...' these two depressed me with a moment of quasi cultural introspection of shame that one may have as only an american can have.

  • im not going to die... I'm not...

  • It's an incredible movie, and while it can be difficult to watch, it instantly became one of my all-time favorite movies. When I rent movies, I usually watch them and return. I had to watch Biutiful twice. It's like a modern-day version of Akira Kurosawa's "Ikiru," but set in Spain. I guess it's just not Ellen Fox's "thing," but anyone who decides to listen to her opinion is going to miss out on a great movie. Anyone who loves serious drama should at least rent it.

  • You don't like when a movie is trying to "teach you something"??? GEEZ this is why the whole world thinks the US is full of idiots.

  • Well they were right that this is a depressing movie

  • Fuck you guys, this movie was amazing.. Opened up my eyes.

  • you two critics are truly incompetent, I wish I could spit on both your big fat heads.

  • Wow, this is by far the worst movie review i've ever seen or read! "The whole town has a bad-hair day" - is that all she got from watching this piece of art?! What a stupid ignorant bitch!

  • @ironlionzion5 lmao...yea seriously

  • this movie fuckin blows stupid american junk away (like 500 days of summer-disgusting) , LONG LIVE EU CINEMA

  • not just Ellen... i believe all the "regular people" wanna see happy people in shinny cars... a lot of people leave and didin´t finish the movie... and the ending (no spoiler) was a true release of all the painfull images in the movie... very very touching i almost cried of happiness at the end. Life is not always rich people that can afford an expensive cancer treatment.

  • Thats because Slumdog Millionaire is a Hollywood fantasy.

You don't movies that teach you something...guess The Godfather was terrible because it taught you about respect.

  • ellen is being so closed minded, if you just watch films to enjoy, there is almost no points, movies are supposed to teach us things!!!!

  • "Anytime I feel like a movies trying to teach me something rather than tell me a story I get turned off and I felt like a large part of this film was an investigative news report on the effects of globalization and illegal immigrants"

    ITS CALLED SUBTEXT, BITCH!

  • Ellen's a bitch

  • Ellen needs to stop believing in unicorns. This REALITY!

  • 78?? lol. The movie is terrific! You must at least have given 90 %

  • That was the worst review ever, If I hadn't seen the movie I probably wouldn't after that review and that would be a shame. Here's my review, you need to watch this movie, I won't tell you anything about it because I might spoil it but it is one of the best movie's I have ever seen.

  • sorry bitch but the whole world isn't 90210

  • @curlyflea LULZ

  • lol Ellen needs to come down from the clouds and see how the world really is for some... this movie wasnt disgusting.. it was gritty yes... but honest... up there with sum of the best movies ive seen definately... and i just love the scores by Gustavo. S.

  • I loved Alvarez...first time ever seeing her in a film but damn...she should've been nominated for an award for her performance.

  • 78%!!! jodios pendejos, no aprecian el arte del cine...triste

  • 10 rotten tomatoes for this review. Brett and Ellen, you really need to grow out of your bubbles. it is really embarrassing. Brett: 'the slums of Barcelona where people try to find beauty in their lives...' the movie is really not about that. Ellen: 'when a movie tries to teach me something rather than tell a story, I get turned off.' you shouldn't be in a critical profession then and from your uninformed comments it appears that you really need to be taught.

  • @depiot HERE! HERE! I don't advocate violence against women, but I wanted to reach in and shake the shizzy out of her and her "typical mall-shopper American" point of view when she said that. I respect her opinion though, if it can actually be defined as an "opinion", even though I don't agree with it. Sheesh, what a tool-ette.

  • the girl is a bitch.......the movie was soooooo wonderful and for me one of the best of the years. how is this "disgusting" its beauty.. the world is full of sickness and danger and is not always pretty so i think its only reasonable for a movie to expose the full "disgustingness" of life. Javier was great in this films and props to the director! well done! this and black swan blew away the other oscar movies!

  • its a shame it didnt won the best foreign film

  • Biutiful was probably the best film of 2010, I honestly can't remember any other movie that I saw, they were so generic and forgetful. Figures that a masterpiece like Biutiful is largely unheard of.

  • What a dirty pirate hooker

  • Kick that bitch out of the room, somebody

  • I like Ellen and Brett. And yes, life is awful, but most people go to the movies to escape from that and see a happy ending. Just because a movie is accurate, well-made or thought-provoking doesn't mean everyone has to enjoy it. Sometimes people just want to see something uplifting that will make them laugh.

  • This girl is a dumb bitch....this film was FANTASTIC!

  • Doesn't change the fact Biutiful is still a bad movie I guess...

  • @rubino83 Sure whatever you say, I take it you don't like it when a "third world country" beats you at anything, but I forgot that in your puny little mind everything else besides the USA is "the third world, and America is a godlike paradise where everyone lives happily ever after." But I am quite nobody gives a shit about your lucid fantasies...now with all due respect sir would you kindly SHUT THE FUCK UP!!!!! than you mkay.

  • @Cpillin425 Sorry. You have failed. Stop reaching. Stop making bad movies. Stop talking.

America is better than you. Heck, the Ivory Coast is better than you at this point. At least stuff is happening there that the world notices or cares about.

  • @rubino83 Why? I haven't seen it yet but it looks interesting.

  • @california727 Thank you!! Now I can see how beautiful Biutiful really is

  • Like I have said many times before, If you are going to watch a foreign movie, it's probably not made for Americans. But, judging by all the shit American movies are, I am just going to assume that these "critics" were probably paid off by the big companies to thwart the foreign competition. Go review your own shitty movies you cunts!

  • @Cpillin425 So basically foreigners like to watch the same movies over and over again? I think I'll take American movies. More variety. (I'm surprised. You always hear unAmericans going on about how creative and good their films are. Who knew they were so fond of paying for the pleasure of watching crap?)

  • @rubino83 If there's anything more cliche in the world it's American movies, so overdone with cg graphics, same recycled shitty actors, same recycled themes of happily ever after, so don't come and argue about how "good" American movies are, because we all know that well...THEY AREN'T. IS that your variety right there? riiiiggght ahahah even Americans hate their own movies, how humiliating ahaha

  • @Cpillin425 How pathetic then that this kind of schlock is what you choose to show the world. A bad facsimile of a bad genre America did better than you (as with everything else).

Must suck for us having enough of a movie industry to make interesting, varied, experimental, and... yknow... quality movies.

  • @rubino83 Unfortunately for you that only thing that "America" does better than anyone else is to spread their stupid egocentric culture, that nobody cares about, for their own personal interests...now that is for the most part agreeable, but that it actually offers anything good is more of an URBAN legend and they know know that. Not that I want to put you down sir, but I believe you guys put yourselves down a long time ago in every aspect not just the movie industry!

  • @Cpillin425 Geez. You want to talk about living off of cliches to hide your failure as a country to add anything to western civilization. Your weak, overused barbs have already been worn out by your betters (i.e. Europe) years ago. Certainly reflects well on your taste, but now it makes sense why you'd think crap like Biutiful is any good: You just can't help it. (All you ever gave the world was Texas. Thanks a tonne.)

  • @rubino83 It's funny how you talk about overused barbs and you're the one talking about Texas, It's also funny how you talk about your exalted country as if it was paradise, when it is full of poor wage laborers working at McDonald's and Kmart, ouch! that doesn't sound like paradise now does it? Hubris. But perhaps you may even be too stupid to understand REALITY, hey I don't judge you. I only judge you by the the fact that your magnificent movies sell for about a dime a dozen ahaha

  • @Cpillin425 Ah yes, how silly of me to forget that there are no poor in your little forgotten hole of a country. Clearly we have a gent here who understands how the real world works. You'd fit well among our right-wing fringe. Like them, you prefer to whine and delude yourself than face the failure of your obsolete beliefs.

But I guess it's good that good movies sell for a dime a dozen in your country (made elsewhere, no doubt), since it's probably about as much as your economy could support.

  • @rubino83 I don't want to give you a lesson in economics, but I do believe that a roll of toilet paper is just about the same price?

  • @rubino83 Not that I am comparing American movies to toilet paper, but nowadays you could probably use both for the same thing ahaha

  • @Cpillin425 That's about the implication I got. Did I make you cry by not replying because you couldn't use that witticism you had laboredly set up?

  • These two are just horrible at reviewing films. Really didn't like their philosophunculist attitude, all condescending an shit.

  • I wanna see this film!! So badly!! But I'm pissed that I can't find a theatre here in L.A. that plays it. If any of you guys here on Youtube have seen it, tell me where it is playing. PLEASE!!!

  • "IVE NEVER SEEN HIM IN HIS NATIVE TONGUE" WHERE TO HELL HAVE U BEEN? AND U REVIEW FILM. ??

  • U people r being too hard on Ellen. I mean, yes she's hard on movies but u gotta give her props for voicing her opinion, its not like u have to agree with her.

  • very stupid shallow review "the city is having a very bad day", "more disgusting than slumdog" and "nothing beautiful in it".... u shallow MFers the movie's is about showing u beauty in another setting "death, illness, domestic insatiability" all done in a very artistic/solid work hence the name biutiful not beautiful..... grrrrr listening to reviews like this makes me hate more the american culture and all what comes from their country (fast food, wars, violence, stupidity and blockbusters

  • I saw Biutiful yesterday at an almost empty theater. It's one of the best movies ever made about death, as far as I know, and the casting of actors and the poetry is so excellent that I find it hard to accept this review (as well as most of the reviews for it in rottentomatoes) lightly. Is there some kind of problem in the American cultural world? Does everyone tread over depth? At least, Brett Erlich is correct, and doesn't trifle with "bad hair days" or some other ludicrous cliché.

  • Ellen Fox didn't like it cause it doesn't involve her sucking dick.

  • BEST OF 2010!!!

  • THIS MOVIE IS FUCKING BAD ASS SAW IT MEXICO

  • Fox hates everything. Let's never watch any movies ever again because they are all shite, apparently.

  • i will never trust her opinion again.

  • i can totally understand what ellen is saying -sometimes some movies seem to try to be overly 'gross'. it can be distracting from the story. that said, i don't think she's as anti this movie as some people are interpreting her review.

either way, i'll see anything with Javier Bardem. anyone wanna check it out with me? we can share a popcorn. i'll sneak in the whiskey :-).

  • @Bellarugger Actually, I agree with you, all that can distract from the story. I think a lot of people just heard her say that what is probably the greatest movie of all time is "disgusting" and of course people are going to get angry at Ellen for that. xD

  • Even do I like this show I am starting to switch to Spill.com

  • if ellen fox hate it, i'll like it definitely.

  • Yer i used to love this show but something has definately changed i just dont think they do a good job any more. Plus because its now a segiment instead of a show there is no space for humor.

  • i hate these movie reviews, these critics sucks so bad, atleast give a semi intellectual explanation to why you hate everything

  • watch a chick flick then less disgusting and less the teaching

  • YET AGAIN brett demonstrates he has amazing taste

  • why does everyone hate Ellen?

  • cool videos, you guys have some pretty bad taste in movies though

  • Seems like Brett is trying to make up for ellen's awkwardness.

  • so ellen pretty much only likes romantic comedies, i guess.

    shes irritating.

  • Ellen and Brett really seem to have lost their chemistry. In the last few videos, the had completely different opinions. Brett going for fresh and Ellen for rotten tomatoes. Weird. And awkward, really. I'm wondering what's going on.

  • I love Ellen

  • Wow, Brett Erlich sounds like Jay Sherman (Jon Lovitz, that is) in "the critic".

  • WHAT??? no one mentions the movie is 2,5 hours long?

shity movie, shity plot and no excuses......... brett u failed me

  • i'm pretty sure Ellen doesn't like anything...

and by now we should expect that of her.

  • @inFAMOUSLYbeautiful I give your review a rotten, my friend gives it a fresh

  • Ellen Fox hates movies. She hates movies that are gritty and realistic and she hates movies that are cheesy and fun. Fox is just a hater.

  • Is this scripted or they actually review the movies? I never see a Fresh-Fresh or a Rotten-Rotten...

  • @ycz04x02 then u havnt been watching the show...

  • @0Gimmick I've just watched it on youtube, not on tv. So far, it's like pre-determined that 1 will give a bad review and the other will give a good review.

  • I think she was saying that this is more... raw than slumdog millionaire. Which was pretty raw. But some people don't like to see stuff like that. she's one of them

  • They gave a 3 minute review for a 78% movie? What the hell is wrong with this show.

  • what the hell!?!?! Slumdog was fantastic not disgusting.

What the hell has happened guys. i really don't feel that this is how they felt about the movie. Something has changed at current. It's almost as if they have to disagree on films now. I'm beggining to regret everytime i watch a preview/review by Rotten Tomatoes. Brett is still great but man Ellen seems to have developed a huge pole up her ass!

  • @fuzzyskeleton i think ellen always has had a pole up hers...

  • @fuzzyskeleton Lol my mom had to leave the theatre during Slumdog Millionaire. Pretty sad.

  • @fuzzyskeleton She meant the setting the movie takes place in is more disgusting than the setting Slumdog took place in.

  • @fuzzyskeleton She was talking about the level of naturalism in movies about slums, that's why she was comparing those two. She never said the movie as a whole was disgusting. Do you get it now? She was talking about naturalistic scenes where the camera takes a close look on something dirty, painful, disgusting (for example the 'sea of excrement' in Slumdog Millionaire).

  • @fuzzyskeleton Um, she does have a point. They take children's eyes out in Slumdog Millionaire, that's pretty gross. Saying something's gross in art doesn't mean it's not good. There are complexities, are you too simple to see them?

  • she thought slumdog millionaire was disgusting? wtf.

  • @kittycatcarley yeah don't you remember them blinding the kids and the beatings and... well... the disgusting parts?

  • @ruagamer No, I remember the beauty in the horror - the life. Life is beautiful - good and bad. I don't think life is disgusting, life is beautiful. All of life.

  • I love how Ellen didn't like it because it was truthful. The world is shit, kiddo. It's not all rainbows and angel farts. Grow up and recognize.

  • @CalebAlucardtheHagan Lol okay debbie downer. Cheer up buttercup!

  • @Maj2004 :P

  • @CalebAlucardtheHagan and you hate Ellen Fox

  • @CalebAlucardtheHagan but then you don't need to watch a movie to see that or do we? Is it now that we are so blinded in reality that we need movies to remind us how harsh the world is? maybe.

  • @CalebAlucardtheHagan I am a bit surprised by her review...oh well. Looks like a flick I'd like to catch.

  • @CalebAlucardtheHagan lol, Shit just got Real!

  • @CalebAlucardtheHagan I agree. These people are usually from beverly hills or malibu and never dealt with real problems in their life. People get sick, people don´t have money and people die. Iñarritu is an expert in urban reality. The biggest and most dramatic problems these two people deal with every day is deciding what they´re gonna wear , or having their spa appointment cancelled.

  • @CalebAlucardtheHagan No, the world isn't SHIT. People like YOU who say that let it become shitty because they're too lazy to change it, but something that's shitty is not shit itself. Also, something that's nauseating is not necessarily truthful, art is not that simple. "Grow up and recognize", what a hypocrite you are. You see the world as black and white, like a child. Ellen had very specific and generous reasons for not liking it, people are DIFFERENT.

  • @Sei1863 When I call the world like it is (a place full of shit and nauseating features that's "not all rainbows and angel farts"), that doesn't make me lazy, childish, or the cause/ enabler of the problems - it makes me a realist. If you can't handle the truth, you're welcome to crawl back inside your cradle.

  • @CalebAlucardtheHagan Yes, it does make you lazy. ANYONE can be cynical, it's the easiest thing in the world. It takes balls to confront the shittiness in the world, rather than resigning yourself to it and calling it "realism". You're pathetic.

  • @Sei1863 I do "confront the shittiness" as best I can. Again, me simply saying that the world has flaws doesn't make me lazy or resigned to said flaws. Get off your moral elitist high ground. Denying the obvious is nothing more than willful ignorance. (If you're going to respond, enough with the ad hominems. Calling me lazy, hypocritical, childish, and pathetic doesn't help your case.)

  • @CalebAlucardtheHagan You didn't say the world has flaws. You said it was shit. That sounds pretty fucking disengaged to me. I'd rather have a moral high ground than be too lazy to climb up to one. By the way, saying "elitist" doesn't make me one. I haven't said anything whatsoever that support that, you're just trying to support YOUR case. It's sad.

  • @Sei1863 Congratulations. You've just admitted that your entire argument was based on semantics. 'Flaws'. 'Shit'. It's the same thing; they're both negative connotations. And with that you're grievances are null and void. Adieu.

  • @CalebAlucardtheHagan No, moron. "Flaws" imply something fixable. "Shit" implies something worthless by nature, irredeemable. If you don't appreciate the significance of semantics, then you're a bigger retard than I thought. Lazy cynics like you love to invalidate others arguments by purposely missing the point.

  • @Sei1863 The word 'flaw' and the word 'shit' have quite a few definitions (far more, in fact, than what you have stated), many of which that are interchangeable with each other. I do appreciate semantics. It's just readily apparent that you're reading way too much into the word 'shit' and it's relation to the word 'flaw'. So, allow me clarify what you have gratuitously misinterpreted: The world is greatly flawed (a.k.a. quite shitty), but it is redeemable, so it's good to recognize this reality.

  • OHHHHH YEAH WHAT NOW
