@JOeyfem1 that depends on how long you want the staff to be. I generally make the center piece at least 2 feet long and the end pieces a bit shorter to account for the connection pieces, but I just wanted to be able to fit it into my luggage for business trips and 24 inches would have it fit diagonally if that is the longest piece
For the three section staff, what if u try using 3/4" or 1" wooden dowels just get a 6' peice and have them cut it into 2' sections... To add the chains, use eye bolts, dend them to get the chain in ( i'd say abt 5 links should to fine). And then use the same connectors as u did on the pvc and screw in the eye bolts after the pvc cement or epoxy dries... There should also be a little bit of space inside the connectors for the chain to hide in... S theres going to be that set back abt strength,
rly? u dnt know how to add chains to a metal 3 part staff? u wield the chain in there. and if u want to be pulled together u wield in a strategic part at one end of the sections and pull the chain through the other end to bring all 3 sections together. its simple....
do you know if their is a way to strengthen it to the point of being able to use it as a striking staff? like jsut make the threads larger and stronger somehow?
You know, after watching this video, you can probably find a way to add chains to the joints and make a bo / 3 section staff... And if you want to make one that u can use in a fight or for sparring purposes, you can make it out of some metal pipes, with the same kind of connectors, except metal... If you do find a way to add chains to the joints, pls. send me a message...
@agentsamaniego It's actually pretty easy to make a sansetsukon with this PVC setup. You just need some nylon cord, a power drill, and an instructional video on how to triple string and viola. I made one a few months ago and its held up pretty well. Makes it a nice portable 2-in-1 kata/practice weapon.
@kolman1357 oh dude! you would NEVER use this setup for striking, it's just for form practice and spinning. You could use the individual pieces for striking, but no, this is just a convenient way to 'pack' a bo staff in your suit case when I travel.
@Sugardaddy501 really? what exactly did not work?, it's just some very simple parts from a hardware store shelf glued together, nothing very complicated
well, actually, that is Nishiuchi Mikio Saiko-Shihan of the Okinawa Kobudo Association on my screen. Hempev has posted some video lessons of Saiko-Shihan on his youtube channel.
PVC is a kind of flexible but tough plastic. PVC is used to make pipes for plumbing. You can find different diameter PVC pipes in a hardware or home improvement store.
I have to ask, how does PVC hold up strength-wise? This is great for practicing while on the road, but if you got into a situation where you had to defend yourself with it would it be effective?
Yes in a 6 foot length in jointed sections like this, you have to be careful how you execute strikes, so it's just for practice.
But in 3-4 foot lengths or in Kali/Escrima stick lengths (like when I take it apart at the end of the video) it would be very effective, especially with extra pieces on the ends.
yes, that is exactly what they are called. If you are using 3/4 inch PVC (which is about an inch or so diameter on the outside) you need two 3/4 inch PVC male connectors and two female connectors. The connectors will be on a shelf near the PVC pipe sections.
Maybe I should make a video showing the parts in the store.
very nice. i havent seen you on youtube yet but i represent choson ninja and i have alot of ninja and samurai instructional videos if you are interested and a ton of bo staff videos. and in samurai armor. nice tips on traveling bo. 5 stars
Hey, I have a question for you. Would it be possible to add a bungee cord inside of the three pieces to interconnect them for a quick deploy method for if you have to sue them defensively or something. Could it be strong enough to were you just have to screw two parts instead of piece them together one at a time. I just thought of this and thought. That's relay cool to have a travel bo. Why not take it a step further for a quick to deploy travel bo. Good luck!
ha! thats cool! very usefull, a Bo staff, kali sticks and a common stick (if you attach 2) in one! :D if you use the kali's or the common stick, you can throw the others on your opponent :D 5 stars (i think i'll make these) *bow*
Can you make one like this but you can strike thing s with it?
Cdub2001 3 months ago
@Cdub2001 difficult to do, the weakness would always be the joints

And if u use the wooden dowels, it gives it that more classic look...

Also, dont ever eat anything bigger than you head. This is me signing out now, thanks and bob bless.

you are absolutely right
this is really used just for exercise
to strike anything, you would have to use a shorter length
I use it for exercise when I travel as I deomonstrate in some of the video responses

i gust made my own wooden one today took about an hour cause i put custom wood burnings in it! works great but it's a little curved!
linkfanatic13579 3 years ago
cool! I haven't tried burnings yet, how did make the burnings?
eteune 3 years ago
i used a soldering iron with a somewhat pointed tip. I used pine so it slipped some what but when it did it didn't leave any marks!
