I rebuilt the entire engine in my 91 Ford Ranger this spring. It was the same model of 3.0L as in your son's truck, and this video was an invaluable resource for me. I have previous experience working in a wrecking yard, but I had never done anything so ambitious before. It has been well over 3000 miles since the rebuild, and it is running great. Thank you so much for posting this.
I have built a few motors in my time....my maverick had bout 480 hp NA right now.
But I was expecting for my 3.0 in my 99 to blow up even tho It had a misfire and a leaking head gasket (they guy i bought it from put dexcool in it) and it never did. just kept ticken away.
i have a 92 2.9 litter and they are known to crack heads once the temp starts to get up there im not sure about the 3.0 ..... what was the culprit for it?
@chevroletrocket - slightly warped head caused gasket to left and leak coolant into the #1 & #2 cylinders. The water jacket port in the block & head was between the two cylinders...
Its pretty cool you put this video together, go you.. @ the internet trolls who could possibly have anything negative to say about this video, F*ck off and die!

alright i need help my car is a 1995 saturn sl2 has126,000 miles every now and then my car with idle real low and sputter then it will completely stall out i replaced the fuel filter and it didn't fix it?? and replaced the thermostat too still same thing
@TNJfarm - Really can't be too much help on an interment issue that requires troubleshooting but I will tell you not to rule out the ignition system or electric fuel pumps. Fuel pressure checks at the time of trouble will help you rule out fuel delivery issues. Electronics in automotive can overheat and cause problems. Problems with exhaust such as Catalytic converters plugging up can cause similar issues and will cause the engine to perform poorly.
@THOMASOAKMAN well it dont matter any more i sold the car for a grand so i got more outta it then i paid for it. but it was a saturn sl2 and when u give it gas it would run fine if it wa sidling low and sputtering and u put it in neutral and rev it up real high to bout 6k rpms it wuld run fine
@TNJfarm In something like that I would say just, make it's idle speed a little higher. Like turn the screw in a lil bit to push on the throttle body ( the little braket your gas pedal cable runs too), on top of your engine. Oh well, at least you got a good deal in the end. lol
@TNJfarm LOL NEVER THOUGHT TO CHECK FOR A HISSING NOISE....THEY CALL IT A VACUUM LEAK....THAT USUALLY IS WHAT CAUSES THAT... BUT YOU SOLD THE CAR ALREADY.

@JITproductions, You're right. I've blown head gaskets on two cars in my lifetime. The first time, it was the thermostat. I bought it brand new at Auto Zone. I just found out that their parts were made in Mexico. If you want quality parts, go to Car Quest. The second time, it WAS a dirty radiator. So yeah, you're right. I am not in love with electric cooling fans either; I like the fans that has the attached fan clutch running off of the timing belt which is also attached to the water pump.
How much is a 88 dodge daytona worth with a blown headgasket? How much you think someone should pay for it? It still runs and drives but it has water in the oil..
The way to prevent head gasket problems is to change your thermostat. Your thermostat opens and closes but a bad one freezes up and won't open not allowing coolant to flow into the engine block. Then the fluids don't have nowhere to go and the high pressure blows coolant through the heads blowing the head gaskets. Than coolant gets into the pistons and oil (crankcase) spewing white misty smoke from the exaust pipe. So....a 3-10 dollar investment into a thermostat can save you an expensive fix!!!
@hasanisangster If your car is over heating it is an inexpensive fix. Another problem can be a radiator that needs to be cleaned. The thermostat was not the problem in this case. The water in the oil was the result of us running the engine for the video pushing it a little further for the sake of this video.

how do you let your car run like that i freak out any time anything starts happeing my radiator started leaking i freaked out and bout a brand new one installed it the same day
@btman2 - Actually that was cylinder #2 and it was seeping coolant so it still combusted and that is why it steam cleaned itself. Cylinder #1 was saturated with coolant and that killed the spark plug and combustion completely so it was still carbonized and totally soaked with huge water droplets...
I sold a ford taurus 1999 that I bought for 350 dollars for 1000 and it had mist coming out from the back a bit. I think they took no notice of it, and after they bought it discovered that oil gasket was broken, oil pan, fuel pump, rotors, brake pad change. I am glad I walked away after 7900 km of driving it myself and bought a toyota 1992 for 650 the profit i made from that ford. I got 10,000 km on it and I am about to sell it for 1000
i don't know about that. i have noticed quite the opposite. my 3.0 has over 200,000 mile and still going..its got a bad lifter but that doesn't surprise me because its had a neglected life. i just started putting money into it after putting about 70,000 miles on it and doing a half ass tune-up. its been one of the most reliable rigs i have owned..i have read and heard from people the 4.0 has given them more problems..and it usually happens with fewer miles.just my experience not trying to argue
This answers my questions concerning my truck (Ford edge 2001). Same problems but not as extreme. Don't think I can fix it like you guys (matter of fact I know I can't). But at least now I have an idea as to what's going on
This guys lucky, hes got someone around to show him the works of his engine, rather than, trial and error or readiculous reading and sifting through bull.
Thanks! My son's did a good job with camera operations but they have a little prior experience helping with our biz. Wish we could have spent more time with production to get more detail...
yes i just flushed the radiator , and has a brand new thermostat , i recently checked my coolant level and its disappearing , i checked all my hoses and no leaks..
at the beginnig of your video you mention that the engine was pinging , form the inside of the vehicle was it mor of a click when you gave it gas ? because my coolant also bubbles like your and my car does overheat and it makes a clicking noise when i give it gas , i check all my hoses and installed a new water pump but my car still overheats
Click or ticking sounds are generally upper end noise such as Lifters. A click or clack sound can mean rocker arm damage. If you have bubbles in the reservoir before the engine overheats then you have a blown head gasket. If not... Have you changed the thermostat? Flushed the radiator?
I agree this video doesnt make his soon look like an ass dont know what great violentz meant hes got nothing better to comment on i guess. Awesome video and very informative.
Wow! I did not expect this... Does anyone else think that I made my son look like (an) ass on youtube? I'll pull all of the Ranger videos if this is the case.
Great! The vague comment "it doesnt run, just revs" now makes sense. By the way transmission fluid is not normally referred to as "oil" and it sounds like your transmission lines going to the radiator or an external cooler came loose or broke. This is good example of why you should find someone you can trust to have a look at the problem such as you did with your mechanic. Thanks for the great posting! ;-)
Man! That is great! Glad to hear this. Hopefully my son will get some miles on this truck before trading up. The truck is running well and he seems to be taking better care of after shelling out several hundreds on this project.
But i do need to replace the original injectors in it because it is starting to run rough and missfire. It has the 2.9L EFI in it and i keep it good running condition.
Please do not use foul language such as on my postings. If cleaning the carbon off your pistons will make them weak then you have other problems besides bad grammar and poor spelling...
I have a similar problem with my Mustang. It's a '73 with a 302, and it blows white smoke, has very little power, stalls, and runs real hot. I'm very sure my problem is a blown head gasket. I shouldn't be surprised. I got it up to 140 on the freeway, and it began missing like crazy.
What is it? Ford, Chevy, Toyota, etc., V8, V6 or 4 cylinder? Of course I can't say for sure but you could have a plugged PCV valve. The block has to breath and if it doesn't it can blow seals. Trust me when I say I know this the hard way... :-)
Man im driving home from work....i see SMOKE coming out of my hood....when i pull over and pop the hood..theres OIL everywhere....car starts fine....but when you put it on drive it doesnt run, just revs...blown head gasket??
or somthing else?? theres no smoke out or water out the tail pipe...
forgot to add i dont have any significant loss in coolant or any overheatin apart from the anoing clouds of smoke when i start it up car works fine.....as i said everything disapears as soon i go for a drive.....funny thing is i was warmin the car for about 40 minutes the other time with white smoke and water comin from exhaust as soon i went for drive problem solved lol.............any ways thanks again
I really can't say for sure. Is this a gas vehicle with an automatic? If the "white smoke" was caused by coolant you would have a loss of coolant and possible oil contamination over time. I will tell you that condensation in the exhaust system in natural and more so in some climates over others. Automatic transmission fluid will also produce a white smoke but again I must emphasize that it will result in fluid loss. Lastly valve seals but it won't last 40 min... Consult with a local Mechanic. :)
dear JITProductions .....hello i own a 97 mg f and when i start it i have water spitin and steam out of exhaust when taken for a drive it stops and dont continue untill i turn the engine off for 30 min or so and when i turn on the engine again i have the steam and water............untill i go for a drive and it disappears lol any thought of what this coold be many thanks stavros
In answer to your questions, it didn't appear any piston tops were "steam cleaned".... thats why I'm worried its something else. However, it did appear a couple of the spark plugs were "rusty" and not black. In the video, you added text saying "driver blew a water pump seal... kept driving". Did it then overheat and warp the head and blow the gasket? Are they aluminum heads? My 4.0 L Ranger are cast iron head and block... not as suseptable to warping from what I've heard.
They are cast iron heads just the same as yours. The rusty spark plugs are an indication that you had a couple of cylinders pumping water and then the engine sat for a while before being torn apart. The heads on our little 3.0L were only slightly warped. You should have the heads trued up anyway. The head gaskets I show you in the video did not have any obvious signs by itself but there were other indicators I took in account for. The 3.0 is doing fine and my son drives his truck daily...
I'll definitely take the heads into a machine shop and get them cleaned, mag-fluxed, and trued up as long as I have them out. Crossing my fingers that changing the head gaskets will fix the problem. I'll also do a good inspection of the cylinder wall, just to make sure there are no visible cracks. Thanks for the advise.
This video is Deja-Vu for me. I have a 2000 Ranger 4.0L V6 upper engine taken apart right now. It started running warmer than nomal (but not into the red). Filled radiator twice before looking at the dipstick and found water in the oil. Couldn't tell anything wrong from the head gaskets. Heads are within 0.005" of flatness, and block is also. Engine has never been over-heated and only has 67K miles on it (original owner). Do you know if there is any other way of water getting into the oil?
Cracked Block or Head? When you pulled the heads did you find one piston top was extremely clean? The only way to find out if it is a cracked block or head is to fully disassemble and have it all magnifluxed. If you had a clean piston top or two it may just be a head gasket or cracked head. Did you have a dead cylinder ( running with a hard miss) bad or wet plug? We took this one apart still warm so I would have a better idea of the problem... Regards!
Yes, I wish I would have known about the "bubling in the radiator" trick. That is a good sign that some of the fuel-air mixture is getting compressed back into the cooling system. I will get the heads hot tanked and magnifluxed. I didn't notice that any of the piston tops were "steam cleaned". Didn't seem to be running too rough, but I caught it pretty early, although I did notice some loss of power (or at least it seemed that way). Hope it's not a cracked block... it only has 67K on it.
I wouldn't judge how busy this man is. It appears he is knowledgible in fixing pretty much anything (since he is also an electrical tech), and took the opportunity to teach his son how to disassemble the top end of an engine and was nice enough to take the time to make a video to document it. Only takes a good afternoon to do it if you know what you're doing and about the same to put back to running order... I'm looking forward to his follow up video on this subject.
The engine is factory. I bought the truck the week my second son made his debut at the hospital. Now the truck belongs to my oldest son. The water pump is not hard at all to take off once you get the fan clutch out of the way. Send me you phone number in a private message, I will try to walk you thru it... Be sure to check out my latest postings on the JITProductions user account.
Just about! Thank God that little engine is still strong and going like the energizer bunny. I really don't have the time right now to take on a project like that even though I do enjoy it!
You got me there! It is like the tootsie roll pop and how many licks it will take... How far could it have gone if I were the only driver? A hell of a lot further than with my teenager driving it! Don't be an ass. ; ) The only thing we did was an upper end job, it has no increase in blow by and runs fairly strong still. Hopefully it will last longer than my teenager needs...
You seem to be a smart person maybe you can help me figure whats wrong with my 94 i have the 3.0l v6 and yesterday the heater stoped blowing hot and and blew cold air then it started overheating i replaced the thermistate seemed fine the restof that day but then started it this morning and its overheating agin with cold air blowing
One other item is the water pump. The impilar can come loose from the shaft although it is rare. Hopefully tis will help if you haven't already figured it out by now.
I have a 01 ranger 4x4 it gets only 200 k with 3/4 tank of gas, thinking about changing plugs and check the 02 sensor. the other way to see if head is blown like in video is check the over flow for bubbles. let us know when part 2 in on.
just poke a hole in the upper hose it will relieve the pressure and the coolant wont burn thru the engine since there is no more pressure build up in the system.
Not necessarily, the shake is a result of a misfire such as an ignition or fuel injection problem and more. In this case the blown head gasket caused the number one cylinder to go dead and the second cylinder was weakened. Contaminated oil, water out the exhaust is a sign of a blown head gasket or cracked block/head. Take care! Jon
Part II is on the machine waiting for me to edit it along with three paying jobs... We have been slammed lately with plenty of business and it feel good! I really want to show it soon as possible...
thanks so much for posting this video. i have a 93 ford ranger xlt, with what i believe is a blown head gasket? wanted to give the truck to my son, just spen $545.00 having it inspected etc..but it has the same symptoms as what you have described. is this something my son and I can do as a project? with very lil knowledge? would appreciate your response thanks so much
This depends on how mechanically apt you are and don't forget to throw in a dash of patience. :) Find a really nice machine shop owner who is willing to provide advice. Your local parts store may have knowlegeable people who will help with suggestions and advice. And don't forget the all important shop manual for pictures, methods, specs, etc. Never short change yourself but know and work within your limits... Go for it!
my sentra has water boiling in the radiator just the other day after the radiator ruptured..i changed the radiator and even more pressure builds up.. the mechanic said head gasket is gone. is there any way to fix this without lifting the whole engine out of the hood? great video, its very informative. I would appreciate any advise you could give me as to if i should fix or junk the car..it does hav over 250K mileso n it. thanks
With 250K miles you don't have much to loose. Give a chemical solution a try such as Bar's sealer for head gaskets. If you do a Google search you can find more professional products that are similar. For an engine I care about I wouldn't do this, it would be better to pull the head and do an upper end rebuild. With the milage you engine has it would be a total rebuild or chemical sealer...
The tank of an engine lives again and with plenty of power. Part II will be out in a week or so time permitting, my work station is tied up with paid projects...
the reason i said this is because i had a 1993 ford thunderbird with transmission problem and 1995 escort hatchback with overheating problems all under 145.000 miles on both now i have 1990 isuzu impulse with over 195.000 miles still going strong...what a relief
but good luck with your truck didnt mean to be rude lol
these 3 videos are entertaining, but is not a how to

I sold a ford taurus 1999 that I bought for 350 dollars for 1000 and it had mist coming out from the back a bit. I think they took no notice of it, and after they bought it discovered that oil gasket was broken, oil pan, fuel pump, rotors, brake pad change. I am glad I walked away after 7900 km of driving it myself and bought a toyota 1992 for 650 the profit i made from that ford. I got 10,000 km on it and I am about to sell it for 1000

Ok the 3l is not a bad 1 I have 1and the power is not that far from a 4
polaristrailboss99 2 years ago
the 3.0L are very good engines the 3.8 on the other hand is a total peace of shit they blow head gaskets all the time.
workensmart 2 years ago
No, the 3 liters in the rangers were the turd engines. The 4 liters made more power and got better mileage.
CoChicken1337 2 years ago
I was talken about the 3.8L that came in the thunder birds, taurus ex not the 4.0L.
workensmart 2 years ago
I know that. That doesn't change the fact that the 3 liters were shit engines.
CoChicken1337 2 years ago
i don't know about that. i have noticed quite the opposite. my 3.0 has over 200,000 mile and still going..its got a bad lifter but that doesn't surprise me because its had a neglected life. i just started putting money into it after putting about 70,000 miles on it and doing a half ass tune-up. its been one of the most reliable rigs i have owned..i have read and heard from people the 4.0 has given them more problems..and it usually happens with fewer miles.just my experience not trying to argue
travis650d 2 years ago
This answers my questions concerning my truck (Ford edge 2001). Same problems but not as extreme. Don't think I can fix it like you guys (matter of fact I know I can't). But at least now I have an idea as to what's going on

yes i just flushed the radiator , and has a brand new thermostat , i recently checked my coolant level and its disappearing , i checked all my hoses and no leaks..
catburner 2 years ago
at the beginnig of your video you mention that the engine was pinging , form the inside of the vehicle was it mor of a click when you gave it gas ? because my coolant also bubbles like your and my car does overheat and it makes a clicking noise when i give it gas , i check all my hoses and installed a new water pump but my car still overheats
catburner 2 years ago
Click or ticking sounds are generally upper end noise such as Lifters. A click or clack sound can mean rocker arm damage. If you have bubbles in the reservoir before the engine overheats then you have a blown head gasket. If not... Have you changed the thermostat? Flushed the radiator?

Actually my mechanic figured out the problem. The 2 transmission hose broke and it was leaking transmission fluid
head gasjet did not blow =)
Its an 1994 acura integra 4 cylinders...154,000 miles
TRider09 2 years ago
Thanks for the great posting! ;-)

I have a ford ranger with over 300,000 miles on it and it is still running good
350s10Dude 2 years ago
Man! That is great! Glad to hear this. Hopefully my son will get some miles on this truck before trading up. The truck is running well and he seems to be taking better care of after shelling out several hundreds on this project.
JITProductions 2 years ago
But i do need to replace the original injectors in it because it is starting to run rough and missfire. It has the 2.9L EFI in it and i keep it good running condition.

clean up your heads dont clean the piston u will make them week...put new gaskits your heads mite b fuked ...
sideways3169 2 years ago
Please do not use foul language such as on my postings. If cleaning the carbon off your pistons will make them weak then you have other problems besides bad grammar and poor spelling...
JITProductions 2 years ago
I have a similar problem with my Mustang. It's a '73 with a 302, and it blows white smoke, has very little power, stalls, and runs real hot. I'm very sure my problem is a blown head gasket. I shouldn't be surprised. I got it up to 140 on the freeway, and it began missing like crazy.
Regislovato 2 years ago
What is it? Ford, Chevy, Toyota, etc., V8, V6 or 4 cylinder? Of course I can't say for sure but you could have a plugged PCV valve. The block has to breath and if it doesn't it can blow seals. Trust me when I say I know this the hard way... :-)
JITProductions 2 years ago
Man im driving home from work....i see SMOKE coming out of my hood....when i pull over and pop the hood..theres OIL everywhere....car starts fine....but when you put it on drive it doesnt run, just revs...blown head gasket??
or somthing else?? theres no smoke out or water out the tail pipe...
TRider09 2 years ago
forgot to add i dont have any significant loss in coolant or any overheatin apart from the anoing clouds of smoke when i start it up car works fine.....as i said everything disapears as soon i go for a drive.....funny thing is i was warmin the car for about 40 minutes the other time with white smoke and water comin from exhaust as soon i went for drive problem solved lol.............any ways thanks again
stavrosplaskas 2 years ago
I really can't say for sure. Is this a gas vehicle with an automatic? If the "white smoke" was caused by coolant you would have a loss of coolant and possible oil contamination over time. I will tell you that condensation in the exhaust system in natural and more so in some climates over others. Automatic transmission fluid will also produce a white smoke but again I must emphasize that it will result in fluid loss. Lastly valve seals but it won't last 40 min... Consult with a local Mechanic. :)

dear JITProductions .....hello i own a 97 mg f and when i start it i have water spitin and steam out of exhaust when taken for a drive it stops and dont continue untill i turn the engine off for 30 min or so and when i turn on the engine again i have the steam and water............untill i go for a drive and it disappears lol any thought of what this coold be many thanks stavros

where is part 2 ? was your heads warped ?
shipwreck885 2 years ago
In answer to your questions, it didn't appear any piston tops were "steam cleaned".... thats why I'm worried its something else. However, it did appear a couple of the spark plugs were "rusty" and not black. In the video, you added text saying "driver blew a water pump seal... kept driving". Did it then overheat and warp the head and blow the gasket? Are they aluminum heads? My 4.0 L Ranger are cast iron head and block... not as suseptable to warping from what I've heard.
sdniel 2 years ago
They are cast iron heads just the same as yours. The rusty spark plugs are an indication that you had a couple of cylinders pumping water and then the engine sat for a while before being torn apart. The heads on our little 3.0L were only slightly warped. You should have the heads trued up anyway. The head gaskets I show you in the video did not have any obvious signs by itself but there were other indicators I took in account for. The 3.0 is doing fine and my son drives his truck daily...
Jon
JITProductions 2 years ago

Do you know if there is any other way of water getting into the oil?
sdniel 2 years ago
Cracked Block or Head? When you pulled the heads did you find one piston top was extremely clean? The only way to find out if it is a cracked block or head is to fully disassemble and have it all magnifluxed. If you had a clean piston top or two it may just be a head gasket or cracked head. Did you have a dead cylinder ( running with a hard miss) bad or wet plug? We took this one apart still warm so I would have a better idea of the problem... Regards!
JITProductions 2 years ago
Yes, I wish I would have known about the "bubling in the radiator" trick. That is a good sign that some of the fuel-air mixture is getting compressed back into the cooling system. I will get the heads hot tanked and magnifluxed. I didn't notice that any of the piston tops were "steam cleaned". Didn't seem to be running too rough, but I caught it pretty early, although I did notice some loss of power (or at least it seemed that way). Hope it's not a cracked block... it only has 67K on it.
sdniel 2 years ago
wow cant be that busy to change the motor
youpaynow78 2 years ago
I wouldn't judge how busy this man is. It appears he is knowledgible in fixing pretty much anything (since he is also an electrical tech), and took the opportunity to teach his son how to disassemble the top end of an engine and was nice enough to take the time to make a video to document it. Only takes a good afternoon to do it if you know what you're doing and about the same to put back to running order... I'm looking forward to his follow up video on this subject.
sdniel 2 years ago
That looks almost similar to my engine. Was it the original or did you do an after factory drop?
Also, how do you remove the water pump and pulley assembly. I'm currently working on mine and having a hell of a time ripping out that little jerk.
mjstibbins 2 years ago
The engine is factory. I bought the truck the week my second son made his debut at the hospital. Now the truck belongs to my oldest son. The water pump is not hard at all to take off once you get the fan clutch out of the way. Send me you phone number in a private message, I will try to walk you thru it... Be sure to check out my latest postings on the JITProductions user account.
Later!

Is the coolant level ok? Have you flushed the system or had the radiator rotted (cleaned)? Most people overlook this basic maintenance need...

79Datson 3 years ago
So when your engine start to shake like this car 0:16 to 0.22 you have a bad head gasket?
obamainformation 3 years ago
Not necessarily, the shake is a result of a misfire such as an ignition or fuel injection problem and more. In this case the blown head gasket caused the number one cylinder to go dead and the second cylinder was weakened. Contaminated oil, water out the exhaust is a sign of a blown head gasket or cracked block/head. Take care! Jon

thanks so much for posting this video. i have a 93 ford ranger xlt, with what i believe is a blown head gasket? wanted to give the truck to my son, just spen $545.00 having it inspected etc..but it has the same symptoms as what you have described. is this something my son and I can do as a project? with very lil knowledge? would appreciate your response thanks so much
coke209 3 years ago
This depends on how mechanically apt you are and don't forget to throw in a dash of patience. :) Find a really nice machine shop owner who is willing to provide advice. Your local parts store may have knowlegeable people who will help with suggestions and advice. And don't forget the all important shop manual for pictures, methods, specs, etc. Never short change yourself but know and work within your limits... Go for it!
JITProductions 3 years ago
ah what the heck! what do I have to lose? not about to spend another 600 or so to fix. anyway can you put up part 2? would appreciate it...
coke209 3 years ago
my sentra has water boiling in the radiator just the other day after the radiator ruptured..i changed the radiator and even more pressure builds up.. the mechanic said head gasket is gone. is there any way to fix this without lifting the whole engine out of the hood? great video, its very informative. I would appreciate any advise you could give me as to if i should fix or junk the car..it does hav over 250K mileso n it. thanks
parim31 3 years ago
With 250K miles you don't have much to loose. Give a chemical solution a try such as Bar's sealer for head gaskets. If you do a Google search you can find more professional products that are similar. For an engine I care about I wouldn't do this, it would be better to pull the head and do an upper end rebuild. With the milage you engine has it would be a total rebuild or chemical sealer...
