  • why it didnt win any awards is completely beyond me, let alone not even get nominated

  • @boogiebuddy01

Synecdoche didn't win any awards because it was a bad movie. Charlie Kaufman's previous movies were all fantastic, especially Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Synecdoche was an overlong, plotless, pretentious blob of nothing. I'd paid to rent it and I still turned it off halfway through. It shocked me also because I thought he was smarter than to turn out some film-student nonsense.

  • like viewing that entire edition regarding this film in a v a t z . n e t remove spaces

  • Synecdoche, New York might be the best movie ever made. That or 2001: A Space Odyssey. But hell yeah, Penn, for getting yet another aspect of society right.

  • I'll miss you Penn

  • WHY DIDN'T I FIND THIS CHANNEL EARLIER!?!? WHY DIDN'T SOMEONE TELL ME!?!?!?! WHY AM I YELLING!!!?!?!

    For fuck's sakes lol.

  • anyway, worthless people with worthless jokes attempting with all their might to seem far more important than they are. you hang out with those sorts? how in the fuck to you spell mautonomous? the whole story is asinine. schenectady is a nice town, though

  • @kroovyandcal -- its spelt "metonymous"

  • charlie kaufmann is the best. that is one amazing directorial debut for someone who is a writer. i imagine he got a lot of help from those surrounding when filming the movie

  • Hi Penn fans. Penn Says videos have been discontinued, so you won't be seeing any new content on here. You can check out our Profile on our Channel Page for more info. We'll still be checking in, so hope to keep chatting with you all! Thanks!

  • holy shit....... this movie was amazing... i'm ready for kaufman to direct another ! :)

  • aman, Penn,

  • Penn Says: Synecdoche: A Cheap-ass Spam Advertisement from a Multibillion Dollar Media Conglomerate.

  • what the fuck? nothing like that movie?

    did you even watch it?

maybe just to deep for you.

  • you should watch the movie again....

  • @tonzimala Wow, you're an idiot who clearly hasn't seen the film.

  • For fuck sake, another tedious stereotype, a "neurotic Jew" "pondering the meaning of life" with the same hack concepts Hollywood's been churning out for a century. Work-shy bitch should get a real job and watch his "problems" dissolve.

  • For some people, making art (books, movies, music) which ponders the meaning of life *is* their real job, and that job is just as dignified as anything else. I am not one of those elitist artistic jerks who looks down on anyone who doesn't enjoy certain types of art. However, it seems that you are prejudiced in the opposite direction-- anyone who thinks deeply about life, meaning, philosophy, etc. needs to "get a life" and "get a real job." Both forms of prejudice are simplistic and wrong.

  • @christianman73 If Penn did say 'Get a Life': /watch?v=EjonhK8iGnQ

  • @bc9021010001 Thanks for stating the obvious. This film was a tedious, overlong remake of "The Truman Show," minus the humor, the skill, and the production values. Gentiles acting out Jewish neurotic self-absorption is a tired Hollywood convention.

"For fuck sake, another tedious stereotype, a "neurotic Jew" "pondering the meaning of life" with the same hack concepts Hollywood's been churning out for a century. Work-shy bitch should get a real job and watch his "problems" dissolve."

  • Is this any way to articulate dissension? I know it's a youtube comment board, but come on, you got 500 characters to work with. Such a great work of incandescence deserves more.

  • You're right. It's a youtube comment board.

  • Whoop-dee-doo, another ad for Sony product from fat dancing monkey shill deluxe Penn Jillette.

  • This video is an advertisement for more boring ass neurotic self-indulgence pretending to be deep from another pet secular Jew on the Zionist Sony payroll.

  • get a fucking life

  • booooooring.

  • shut up you moron!

  • One Fact I Do Know:

    1. setirovaf9 is an unoriginal, attention-starved moron that doesn't even know the difference between "your" and "you're"

  • I like it. Synecdoche ruled.

Metonomy is also when you say stuff like: 'the kettle is boiling' ...

    The police example was good.

  • Wasn't this guy a magician?

  • The movie is funny, strange and profound. I was quite happy with this film.

  • fucking loved this shit

  • I had never heard of Kaufmann and the movie was one of the most enthralling things I have ever seen. Certainly one of the best-written movies in recent years.

  • Seriously?!

I thought the movie was awful. Every character was unlikable and narcissistic. I really couldn't care about anyone in it.

  • Well, first of all I don't agree. I could emphasize with the characters' motivations very well, I didn't find them overly egotistical. Caden wanted to create something meaningful and great and see his daughter whom he loved; so did his wife. They and everybody else just didn't want to be lonely.

But even if they were all horrible people, can't it still be an extremely well-written and executed film? Who says that for it to be great you have to like the characters?

  • I'm sorry, but there is a limit to how much whiny, apologetic, Philip Hoffman sex I can take in a movie. And this one well surpassed it.

  • Yeah, but that was Ben Lyons; the same idiot critic who proclaimed that I Am Legend was "one of the best movies ever made". He's a massive tool.

  • Alright, let's all watch a Penn vid and then argue over the existence of God... so lame

  • lol i dout that will happen, if you honestly believe in god, your dangerous and stay away from me.

  • I was being sarcastic.. It seems like so many of these vids by Penn are full of people arguing about this topic- haven't you noticed? Or is it just me?

  • I agree, the movie was absolutely brilliant, and incredibly moving.

  • lmao at 0:42

  • Is that Ozzy Osbourne?

  • You should make a video response so we can see your blinding beauty.

  • i really want to check out the movie...saw an interview with Charlie and it sounded really interesting.

  • what? scynecdochy or motonomy? i dont get it..

  • Was she crying out of pain?

  • I just wanted to say thanks Penn -- after learning about synecdoche and metonymy, I can now sound 75% more pretentious in front of my friends!

  • that Sony logo at the end always freaks me out

  • I could listen to him talk and not understand a fuckin' word he says for hours... But I won't. However, I think that qualifies me to get a job at Sony (by way of Crackle), doesn't it? So, if you think of the cunt's name and it turns out to be Jane Fonda, could you please let us know?

Love ya big guy - S. I. (we met twice, once through a mutual friend)

  • made me laugh. 5 stars

  • Another movie I've never heard about. I don't watch TV either so there you go.

  • Thanks for the informative and funny video. I always use the example of all hands on deck doesn't mean they expect the sailors to cut off their hands and throw them on the deck. It also reminded me of a video I should do on the subject dealing with religion and philosophy--a really short one but important.

Many people believe that man ceases to exist at death. Man is a soul so when man dies the soul dies. They will even misquote the Bible to prove it.Yet Adam became a living soul is aynedoche.

  • @Blogrich

Or it could just be that your dualistic notions are complete rubbish from the start and the Bible holds no more authority on any subject than a piece of toilet paper.

  • "@Blogrich

Or it could just be that your dualistic notions are complete rubbish from the start and the Bible holds no more authority on any subject than a piece of toilet paper."

Or could it be you are obnoxious and ill informed, the typical type of person who thinks he becomes an instant intellectual by denying God's existence?

  • No, people don't qualify as the intellectual elite by simply realizing the foolishness of theism, but anyone who does believe in god is either incurious about the truth, ignorant, or foolish. There is always the final option that they just have too much personally invested in the idea of god to allow themselves to objectively explore the idea. If a child was raised without any kind of indoctrination I bet they would see through the stupidity of theism instantly.

  • "but anyone who does believe in god is either incurious about the truth, ignorant, or foolish"

Then Leibnitz and Sir Isaac Newton, eho invented caluculus must have been "either incurious about the truth, ignorant, or foolish." I smell an intollerant bigot here and it is you.

Merry Christmas. Oh, and maybe you have "too much personally invested in the idea of [no] god to allow [yourself] to objectively explore the idea.

The axe swings both way dude. I have never seen an openminded atheist yet.

  • I like how you took the first part of my quote to use against me and then used the second part that invalidates your first point later on to make a different point. Good job there, very adept at twisting facts around. And as for not being open-minded, I have never met very few atheists without open-minds. The trick is to not open your mind so far that your brain falls out. Having an open mind is about evaluating possibilities on their evidence, not on your biases, and theism fails that test.

  • "very adept at twisting facts around."

Nothing was being twisted. You don't seem to realize how truly narrow minded you are. You think no one can think and POSSIBLY disagree with you or see thing from a different perspective. Atheism doesn't make a person an ignoramous. So why do bigots like you have to insult Christians because they chose a different way of looking at life.

You are an insulting, impudent and petty. Wheb you develope an open mind and can write without insult I'll listen.

  • Perhaps if you would have listened in the first place you would have noticed what you are saying is crap. I did not say anyone who disagrees with me is stupid. I specifically listed several reasons why someone might be a theist that are not stupidity.

Secondly, atheists get called bigots all the time for pointing out the flaws in a BELIEF. If I criticized marxism would that make me an anti-marxist bigot? No, criticizing beliefs does not make one a bigot.

  • Keep throwing around the narrow-minded thing, maybe someone will be foolish enough to fall for it. The fact is I used to be a fundamentalist Christian and then I chose to critically examine the beliefs. There is no open-mindedness in religion. I, however, do not believe things just because some book or some person tells me I should. I look for the evidence supporting the claim. That is legitimate open-mindedness, examining an issue and deciding on the actual merits of the position.

  • "I look for the evidence supporting the claim. That is legitimate open-mindedness, examining an issue and deciding on the actual merits of the position."

This is the way to go. Good luck. One thought is that God is not empirically verifiable. He will not jump into a test tuble and change colors like a piece of litmus paper.

Materialism often refuses to acknowledge God but shouldn't.Not calling you one. Gordon H Clark should be at least considered by atheists before final decisions are made.

  • I am most definitely a materialist. The error is on the supernaturalism side. There is not even the slightest shred of evidence for supernaturalism and, as you just stated, there can't be. The fact is personal experience is unreliable as a test of truth, only objective measures can be trusted. This means that if there is no objective evidence for the supernatural or god, while it doesn't disprove those things, it leaves us no reason to believe. Thanks for the congenial discussion.

  • You were never a Christian. Why is it that the lost man will agree with some things written in Scripture, and then reject them later, and tell us he "was a Christian"? When God saves someone, they ARE saved. You can't make yourself to be born again anymore than you can make yourself a giraffe.

  • Utter foolishness. I believed in the inerrancy of scripture, I believed prayer could literally raise dead people, I was just about as much a Christian as you can possibly be before you become a Charlie Manson. It's amusing how often Christians, upon hearing someone who used to agree with them realized the lunacy of it all, reject the very idea that the person could ever have been one of them. It's a very transparent case of a person trying to justify their own irrationality to themselves.

  • You say you believed the Bible, and then in same sentence you say that "payer could literally raise dead people." Which is it? The Bible, or the idea that prayer can raise dead people?

  • Um... that's not a contradiction. In the Bible it says that if the faithful ask something of god it will be granted. It also says that the miracles performed by Jesus' followers would surpass his own. I could go on, but the point is this is a solid biblical principle and simultaneously is ludicrous. As for your other response to the Bible being vindicated scientifically, it's a bit late for that. The Bible refers to the CORNERS of the earth, it says the moon generates it's own light, etc.

  • Jesus said that his followers work would surpass his own, and it has. Jesus healed plenty of people, and then Christians for two thousand years have opened up hospitals, and Christian doctors travel to many foreign countries to help people. Our works have surpassed Jesus, in SCOPE, not in power.

It also is NOT a "solid biblical principle" that anyone can pray for anything and God will say yes to it. That is ridiculous.

You do not understand Scripture, and it seems like you do not want to.

  • You - are applying your own interpretations of some verses in the Bible back onto the text itself as if your interpretation is the only one that could be meant by the original authors. Your interpretation contradicts the opinion of the entire evangelical movement. Of course, that doesn't mean they are right, but it does mean that there is a huge group of Christians who agree with my interpretation of that verse. You're both wrong about reality, but the verses do support this interpretation.

  • No they don't and I wonder who exactly in Christendom believes the crazy ideas you put forth? let me guess, you ignore high scholarship and all those who study and take the Bible as it is written, and instead find some wacko splinter group, and then call that,

"what Christians believe"? That is the opposite of attempting to find the truth isn't it.

  • "If I criticized marxism would that make me an anti-marxist bigot? No, criticizing beliefs does not make one a bigot."

No, you are right here for sure. As an apologist who deals with both religion and philosophy, I am often called a bigot for criticizing various other religions such as Mormonism or the Watchtower's ideology.

I feel we are just going around in circles and generating more heat than light. It is Christmas and I am sure we both have better things to do. Peace for now.

  • So if I choose to look at life that magic jelly beans make electricity and some giant paper cup rules the universe, you wouldn't call that stupid and claim it's totally valid viewpoint? Not all viewpoints should be humored. Christianity doesn't get a free pass because you choose to pick that delusion as your preference. If you can prove the supernatural claims made by ANY religion, I guarantee you any atheist would convert to it instantly. How's that for open-mindedness?

  • Your words just prove the Bible to be accurate, though I don't need more evidence. Your last statement about Atheist's converting instantly, is assuming that man's will is free and not enslaved to sin. Do you not read newspapers?

Have you not raised any children? scientists can't even tell us WHY electricity works.

what if Quantum physics turns out to be real?

  • You display a shocking level of disconnection from reality. Scientists can't explain electricity? Do you really believe that? A highschool textbook could correct your ignorance. About quantum physics, to quote a great movie, "I dun' think that means what you think it means." Quantum physics is twisted into new age nonsense by uninformed people but in reality it confirms naturalism. Go read some legitimate quantum physics by actual scientists and you'll realize how inane that statement was.

  • I did not say scientists cannot explain electricity. I said they cannot explain WHY it works. I can tell you are worried about Quantum physics. I think it is a bit too early to say one way or the other, but as for myself, I am confident that science will prove the Bible to be right in everything it says.

  • Science has already proven big chunks of the bible incorrect. Natural history, as revealed by the evidence in the Earth itself, contradicts the biblical account. For that matter, human history contradicts it too. Many biblical events have been proven by historians and archaologists not to have happened (e.g. the census at Jesus' birth, the whole Exodus saga etc.. biblical fiction.)

  • Interesting approach. Just tell a bunch of huge lies at the start. Not one statement you made is true.

  • Thank you for revealing yourself to simply be a troll completely uninterested in actual discussion of the topic. I will assume this was a response to TravisMorien so I will lend a bit more weight to his side and then I will refrain from returning to argue with you further because you have no interest in truth, merely reasserting your own dogma. Everything TravisMorien said is true. I am a historian and there is no legitimate evidence for the historicity of Jesus, and most Biblical events.

  • I am thinking that lying is your central tenent of your code. Bart Erhman is the main guy that is used by Atheists and Muslim debaters to say the Bible is not true. HE...says that there is all kinds of evidence that Jesus existed and said what is recorded in the gospels. I have a discussion group that is linked to my profile on YouTube, and anyone is welcome to debate in depth on that group.

  • "If you can prove the supernatural claims made by ANY religion, I guarantee you any atheist would convert to it instantly. How's that for open-mindedness?"

You can't guarantee anyone would convert to Christianity. Fallen man cannot come to Christ without the Holy Spirit drawing him. Only God's elect will be effectively drawn and given eternal life. You can't even choose to believe without God.

So, did your magic jelly bean evolve from a juji bean? Of course they at least share a common sugar.

  • Seriously, are you directly going to avoid every inquiry and hide back in your hole so just so you can regurgitate to make yourself believe? If you were able to prove any of it, I don't think why anyone wouldn't believe. Hmmmm eternal bless or eternal torture.....why the fuck would anyone choose hell over heaven if they did exist? It's cuz you can't prove neither one plus your sky daddy exists

A magic jelly bean is more plausible as we at least know what a jelly bean is and know they exist

  • Now I'm going to have to go find out where I can see this movie!

I hope your cold is better - I was getting worried since there hadn't been a new Penn Says in over a week! :)

  • anyone else not sure what he's talking about :o

  • Just a thought...you might think about changing the right hand description to not being third person...I don't mean to be anal but it is a removal by one level to who you're addressing, if you know, or care, about what I mean.

  • Penn Jillette himself doesn't run this site nor does he add the description. Its a product of Sony by way of Crackle, so its not like he is writing about himself. Someone else is writing to describe what the video is about. It actually is a third person.

  • PEEEEEEEN =)

    your awesome

  • Did you just call Penn, peen?

  • i guess ;(

    my bad penn

    PEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEENN =)

    there we go

  • Hahahaha, there you go, sir.

  • or pen

  • Great video, Penn. :-)

  • I love Penn and his perfectly triangular nose...

  • I saw Kaufman recently on Stephen Colbert, and assumed the movie was due to be released soon. I was looking forward to it. Now I find that it's been and gone, and doesn't seem to be on DVD yet. =( It definitely sounds like it will be worth the wait though.

  • Sweet mother of God I loved that movie. Great video, I'll use that next time someone calls me a dick (it happens fairly often).

  • "Better that seeing some action piece of shit."

    You got that right.

I saw the movie, it was breathtaking, I admit I found it a bit hard to understand, but after watching it again everything made sense.

I wish I could cry while watching a movie, I always get incredibly moved and feel liky crying, but I've never actually shed a tear.

    Odd

  • cool one penn!
