When Paganini used to play these insane songs in a style nobody had ever heard. He was actually accused of being demonically possessed and almost tried for witchcraft. Bet ya-didnt know that!!
I have never heard anything like it - it's amazing absolutely!!! His play is perfect, moving, great technique, and the way he plays it is as if he makes the melody really alive!
Maybe it's because Gavrylyuk tackles the very competitive pieces, but there's always some pianist that pieces every piece he plays better. Gilels & Michelangeli for these variations, Horowitz for the Rach 2 sonata, Pogorelich and a few others for the Islamey, Rubinstein and Richter play the Rach 2 concerto better. Pretty unfortunate. A good but kind of standard virtuoso.
@asdfqwerp1 What does being a pianist have to do with criticism? You don't have to be a chef to know that someone served you a plate of shit. His points, if true, are valid.
@asdfqwerp1 Why do people on the internet feel the need to randomly insult each other over the most ridiculous and petty things . It's like the internet unleashes some dormant part of our true selves. Is this the person you want to be in the real world? Spreading ill feeling and criticism instead of encouragement and constructive debate? I don't mind I just find it hard to understand. I am not a very good pianist.
@konzolmester In their defense: they were clapping at the end of Book I of the two sets of variations. He jumped immediately over the repetition of the theme to the first variation of Book 2, which probably took the audience by surprise.
I've played these and man, I envy this guy! Beautiful playing.
GREAT... it's horrible difficult piece, "HEXEN-VARIATION" said Clara Schumann, for me its too loud especcially when Brahms write piano but if you could listen also ALEXANDER KOBRIN - winner of Van Cliburn Competition
One of the very best pianists performing today, even though he missed the poetry and deep nostalgic sentiment in the Landler variation. The rest is just colossal.
Try Alexander Rosenblatt's variations on Paganini's theme, with Nikolai Takerov at the piano...it is recent and in my opinion, breath takingly exspansive.
Is he Armenian? A technical genius, his left hand is so much smaller than Richter's but what he can do with it is incredible. Astounding musical understanding and agility, his features remind of the young Rachmaninov. I am impressed!

@demosj Unfortunately, you're a good but standard YouTube critic. Probably a substandard pianist as well!

Gavrylyuk creates a wonderful world of sound with the clear lines and colours of a Mondrian.
-Guido van Oorschot in De Volkskrant, February 2009
Gavrylyuk is absolutely phenomenal. Blinding virtuosity, deep musicality, musical intuition, intelligence and aristocratism. -Nikolay Petrov, 2008
A world class pianist performing at his absolute best. -NY Times, 2005
An extraordinary talent. -Vladimir Ashkenazy, 2003
