@fordxbgtfalcon It's ridiculous. There are a few interviews wit ha local reporter here on YT. Watching what she is going through is very discouraging.
I cannot help but think that overly stringent/bureaucratically muddled gun control only strips power from those who obey the laws. The lawless bastards that want to rob you more than likely didn't get their guns legally and will, in my opinion, prey on people even more so knowing that the law-abiding cannot easily arm themselves. Subversion of the 2nd Amendment also strips us of the ability to defend ourselves against our own government, should that unfortunate scenario become necessary.
@vangard213 Thats what I was thinking. Don't want to buy a gun and not be able to handle it. As far as getting advice from someone who's been shot...hmmmm. Not sure if that's good or bad. ;)
-A gun does not make you invincible. I taught somebody I knew that lesson the hard way.Pulled him right out of a group, nobody noticed. If I had wanted to hurt him, rather than just teach him a lesson, he could've died and I would not be a suspect.
-Foresight is the most valuable weapon of all. Have some plans, some prep, and you minimize the chance you'll need to use a gun.
-Practice makes perfect. If you don't, you're more likely to hurt yourself than your attacker.
@MisterDyslexo Thanks. Agreed on all of that. It will only be used in my home and I plan of practicing. If I feel for one second I am acting differently for having gotten one I will get rid of it.
@gfreakj The 9mm is great for protection at home or when shooting at the at at the range. It has very minimal recoil. I have a baretta 9mm solely for home protection. It is larger and heavier than the glock easy to clean and keep maintained. You can Google baretta 9mm for the pic and specs. I tried to send them but was unable.
The right to bear arms is very important. Without it we risk losing all our rights. I'm with you on this and I hope you already know how to handle a gun or will take lessons. Its important to feel comfortable with a weapon for it to be efficient.
I just got my first gun, a Springfield XD-40. In my town in NJ, the police dept has been extremely helpful and nice, not like the horror stories I have read about what other people in my state have had to go through
@TheLegalImmigrant05 I have already gotten helpful info and offers of further help if I need it from the DCPD. Pleasantly surprised. Why did you choose that particular gun?
@gfreakj The caliber is enough to stop a bad guy if need be; the make - well, it's good value for money. Springfield XDs have nice safety features, like bullet in chamber indicator, cocked striker indicator, and grip safety. Glocks, which many people say Springfields are similar to, don't have those safety features. And XDs are cheaper than Glocks.
Google "Washington, DC Shooting Ranges & Guns" Find a club close to you.
Most clubs have certified instructors. Many instructors offer group classes at cheap prices to teach you how to safely handle your handgun. Also, Your gonna want a gun that is dependable, Easy to load, easy to fire, easy to clean & versatile. I recommend a "Ruger GP-100" It is a 357 magnum that can also fire .38 caliber.
@TheLegalImmigrant05 I'm responding to both of the comments you left here. Other comment you left wont let me for some reason.
Thanks for the info. I'll keep it in mind. Do you know if gun ranges/clubs will let someone come in and try different guns out first? I've never handled a gun before and I think I should before making any decisions.
congrats on becoming a firearm owner, it comes with great responsibility and legalities but as long as you do your research on laws, legalities and so on you should be fine. I'm a firearm owner in California. whenever possible try to get some training and practice in and test various brands of ammo for reliability and grouping some guns don't like some brands or types of ammo and others work flawlessly or prefer certain types. Personally for me my concern is over penetration if used defensively.
G/Freak. Great to hear you are going to move forward on owning a firearm. Do yourself a huge favor and get some professional training even if you have to go to another state. Your gun is just a tool and everyone needs to learn how to use dangerous tools safely. Spend a couple hundred dollars on a class it is well worth it.
We're going to get er done G/Freak! The more people that jump on the band wagon the better! Gosh dang it you have a right to defend yourself and that turd of a mayor has decided where, when, and if you can defend yourself! Well I say F that! Don't forget to tell anyone that ask; FACT: More guns equals less crime.
I going to also put together a gun safety flier to help you guys that have no experience handling guns. But like everything, common since goes a long way.
@ronterry1076 I appreciate any help you can offer. Surprisingly my local PD has been helpful and friendly about it so far. Im gonna make a video reading some of the info I have and the types of guns we can legally own.
12 gauge pump shotgun is the best home defense. Not enough to pass through your house into another's house and plenty of power. Dependable as long as you are trained to use it. There is a reason that cops carry shot guns. They work!
@KlingonSpider Thanks for the info. I'll keep that in mind. Not sure what I want to get yet. I have a small apartment and a shotgun is what seems to give me the best chance of hitting my target.
Congrats @gfreakj. Hope the process goes smoothly for you. As for your CCW in DC, I know how rough it was back in MD to even entertain the thought of obtaining one for your 2nd Amendment rights. I imagine that process is ever more maddening in DC. Good luck!
@gfreakj To the point that in DC you have to prove you've been threatened, does the city's overall crime rate & legacy of homicide numbers serve as good enough proof? :\ I mean what are these bureaucrats looking for, a death threat with the signature "non-law abiding criminals" on the bottom?
Well, at the bare minimum I hope you won't (or didn't) have any issues securing a firearm to protect yourself at home.
@unworld Not to the screwy politicians we have here./ Once I get shot in the head they'll slide the permit under my pillow in the ICU. ;)I hope I don't have too many problems though I am realizing it is going to be rather difficult.
I know in NY, they can just deny you without telling you why, and of course, they keep all the money you paid... which is one of the reasons I'm moving! ;-P
@theboarman Yes it is. I don't need anything that is gonna knock me off my feet. I wonder if there is a way I can test guns without buying just to get a feel for them.
we have it pretty bad as well here in california, I feel your frustration.
