  • I know this song for over 45 years ... and at the time, I remember very well, thinking,

'but you did well time to think about it "... 52ans and I, with a busy life ... and I enjoy that ....... 37 years since I was 15 ... Now for me this song has a story, and it is a wonderful story .. I wish you all ....the story of your life littered with memories ....

  • great song and man he is so sexy

  • Listening to this music as a young man I knew I didn't really know what the lyrics meant, the kind of knowing only experience gives you. It made me think about life and the future and the kind of person I would be. I don't know for sure but I wonder what music does this for my kids?

  • Dunno which came first, but it sounds like How I Love You by Engel Humperdink.

  • This is OK, mundane (from a great singer) - but various other "better" versions readily available

  • Excellent singer and what a nice song¡¡

  • That is a great video, showing Johnny at differant stages of his life, it brought tears to my eyes....imagine 56 yrs of hearing the magic voice of JM.....thank you rovingeye2 :>)

  • Roy clark sings thi THE best. But Johnny has THE best VOICE ever

  • When Roy Clark returned from a tour of Russia, he spoke of the reception he received when he sang Yesterday When I Was Young. When he finished there was dead silence, and he thought the audience disliked the song. But as he started to walk off the stage, he heard the most thunderous applause he'd ever been given.

  • This song was written by Paul Anka for

Frank Sinatra. Aznavour version is better known in Europe.

  • @delfreak You are completely wrong ! Never Anka wrote this song! "Hier Encore" is a song released in 1964, written by Charles Aznavour & Georges Garvarentz. The English-language lyrics were written by Herbert Kretzmer.

  • @delfreak Sorry....Paul wrote "I`ll do it my way"

  • @76oldlady ,Youre right , I made mistake , t hanks ....

Two opposite song. One drives spite while the other regrets ...

  • @76oldlady I guess I dated myself by knowing this..You did notice my name.."old lady"..ha ha

Thanks for your reply....Everyone makes mistakes...No big deal..even if some people pounce the minute they get an opportunity....like "YOUR ARE COMPLETELLY WRONG"...so unecessary.....I am not sure about who wrote that song...I will have to look it up...I may have been wrong....always thought that Roy Clark did...Could be ..the first to sing it....

  • Incredible how a song that's probably twice my age has so much meaning to me.

  • A M A Z I N G

  • The best version of this song and let me say that I love Aznavour voice and songs, but this one is the best so far.

  • DEAN REED sings this beautiful song the best

  • This is a very good rendition. But Mr. Aznavour's way of singing it is legendary . He brings about feelings and emotions that no other artist can bring to this masterpiece.

  • @ksimonsand I agree completely !!!!

  • All I can say is robin thicke watch out...I would like to see robin and johnny to do a duet together...

  • Where is that popular guy..to listen to Johnny Mathis is too feel the inner sincerity of love from the heart....... brownsugar

  • This song is the french song by Charles Aznavour singer, composer and the title in french is "Hier encore".... Well sung by Johnny Mathis with his wonderful voice !

  • Catch Bobby Darin and Sandra Dee at :36

  • My father passed away a few days ago and I have been reminiscing listening to songs on here from his youth. I came upon this one and it made me cry - so beautiful and poignant - and so true.

  • Johnny Mathis, is one remarkable singer. His songs come from his heart to everyones heart around the world.

  • Johnny Mathis, is one remarkable singer. His songs come from his heart to everyones heart around the world.

  • How true. At 75 I know it.

  • Nostalgie quand tu nous tient!!!!Je rajeuni de 30 ans en écoutant ses chansons.Que d'émotion!!!!!!

  • with all due respect to roy clark; this is the way this song is meant to be sung.

  • @conyelp, I just bought a Sony wireless Blu-ray. It has You Tube that you can access all You tube videos just like in your pc. The first thing I searched was this song by Johnny Mathis. I can play the video on a large screen. It's very nostalgic watching the video of Johnny Mathis singing "Yesterday When I was Young". I'm now 71 but still feel I'm 30. I think I was only 24 when I first heard this song.

  • Boas lembrancas da minha adolescencia!!!!

  • roy clark's version is more emotional.

  • This is a very poignant and poetic song about the wages of arrogance and self-absorption. I love the drums--and, of course, the vocals--in Mathis' version.

  • i respect u mr 70 years old not sure if i will be 70 but hey you life is great full of various emotions and occasions :) well we gotta love god isnt he so creative

  • take time while its there

  • @tooslow421 so true thanks!

  • this song sum's up life, well mine anyway . one of my favorites. its the lyrics

  • this song sum's up life, well mine anyway . one of my favorites

  • When was this song sung??? What year? Thank you for posting this...again

  • Wow.....Amazing song........in a melancholy moment.. Thank you for posting this one!!! A song of Life....the good and the not so good....Thanks again

  • i am guilty!

  • I'm 24, but it feels like i died 20 years ago.

    ahhhh

  • Nah....

I love Johnny Mathis' music, but he doesn't get the passion/pain of this song. He's just singing, not livng it through his interpretation.

  • Thanks for replying to my comments. That was a year ago when I wrote that comment and I'm surprise it went to the highest rated comments. I'm still fan of Johnny Mathis. One of my favorite song "Yesterday when I was Young". I'm happy for what I am now. Have a family and own a house. Collecting social security and small pension. @hommefriday, @ christianmon & @ MisAudrey64.. Thank you all, hope you are happy and no regrets about the past and yesterday..(years).

  • I miss his style of singing and the talent it took. Not many today can come anywhere near it.

  • i love his voice and songs!

  • Charles Aznavour, in my opinion, has the ultimate version of this song. I don't like this one, sorry, just my opinion.

  • I never realized this was Johnny singing this. I remember this song because my mother used to play it when I was a child. If this man sang any better I'd have to believe the angels had come for me and that God would soon be calling my name.

  • WHAT A TALENTED SINGER! WE WERE BLESSED TO HEAR HIM FROM THE 50S ON 1... SO MUCH TALENT FROM THAT TIME , COULD ANYONE SURPASS THE VOCAL ABILITY OF THIS MAN ... ? UHMM DOUBTFUL

  • I love much J MATHIS, but about this song I prefer Charles AZNAVOUR's French version (in french, HIER ENCORE)

  • I am 60 and look back and see that all my dreams did in fact come true - I am blessed indeed.

  • Johnny could sing ANYTHING!

  • SHIRLEY BASSEY's version is amazing.

  • @NOrleansbro "amazing" doesn't do her live from Royal Albert Hall performance justice. It is both mind blowing and heart stopping! It is THEE definitive version.(my opinion of course) it is achingly beautiful. (I am so glad to have seen her perform)

  • Listen to the versioan of Charles Aznavour....i'm stil crying...

  • Words in this song are too true! It's a wonderful reflection on what happens to most of us while we are living our lives on this earth.

  • I wish I would've taken these words to heart - when I was young.

  • Hi all. I've attached a video I did of Wichita Lineman. Would like to hear any suggestions/comments from anyone kind enough to check it out. I welcome all honesty. Thanks for sharing. Btw...I think Johnny Mathis was an awesome singer.

  • I was a kid in the back of my Dad's 72 Falcon thinking this was toture. Thats was 30 years ago and now I have come to appreciate artists like Johnny. This one is the kicker though, being that it reminds me of my innocent childhood. I played it via Youtube to my mother a few months ago, it brought tears to her eyes.

  • Charles Aznavour sings this beautiful song the best.

  • it feels like salt is being rub on the wounds of a man dealing with midlife crisis

  • musica de mis anos doradosyy no lo sabia!!!!

  • IT'S A BEAUTIFULL SONG!!!! BEAUTIFUL VOICE!!!!! WHAT A FEELING!!! YESTERDAY WHEN I WAS YOUNG!!! OH MY GOOD!!!

  • this is lovely

  • Although I have been a Johnny Mathis fan since the 50's in my opinion the best version of this song is by Roy Clark.

  • Thanks! This is great. I wasn't yet born when Mr. Mathis had his biggest hits.

But I'm older now too and can relate. I always wondered what he looked like when

he was younger. Great voice. Like no other!

  • No one sings like Johnny Mathis. Beautiful.

  • ohhh i have never heard this artist before ..thank you ..i new name to my collection ..love it !!

  • for my Julie....in a life past...

  • this song was from "Theme From Romeo & Juliet" album that was released in 1969

  • Just enjoy the song.

  • Adoro essa canção!!!

  • What is all this talk about the bible? The old testament is jewish propaganda to cover all their land grab and killing and the new testament is bargain basement Buddhism edited by controlling catholics to give them world domination - it is a pitiful collection of myth and lies.

  • @EriktheNog BITE YOUR SELF!! YOUR OWN POISON WILL DESTROY YOU!!!!!!!!!!!

  • What poison? I'm just giving you the objective truth. Grow up.

  • @achahei.munichlady.paddywackwacky..wellyou please shut up booth of you still morons just listen the song theres nothing on the bible written correctly its what have you done to others can save in life after death...amen..hehehe

  • I really like his version of this song .... it's his voice ... so dreamy , so emotional ...

  • rovingeye2

I love the way you put this video together; showing him fom the beginning, as he ages to present. Excellently done, plus I love Johnny Mathis. He has a voice like no other and he's gorgeous. Who cares if he is gay. His sexual preferences are his business. The fact is the man can sing.

  • I like Johnny but not on this song . Roy Clark has the best version of this song I have ever heard.

  • Absolutely beautiful but remember we will always be young at heart..........................

  • Young people, to avoid the excesses of youth, do take heed of the timeless teachings of the Holy Bible. They are meant to steer us from the pitfalls of life lamented in this song.

  • Oh for heavens sake. This sort of Bible thumping

is so ridiculous. Youth is meant to enjoy being young and not to be poisoned by rantings.

Does God make mistakes ? I dont think so.

  • @munichlady

The majority of humankind would want to avoid pain and misery. So does the writer of the song, hence his message. If you prefer to experience the weals and woes of life through wild living, it is your human right although that seems bizarre to me.

  • i agree. i understand the message of this song now that im much older. had i read and obeyed the manual for living, Bible, when i was young, i would have avoided a lot of mistakes. but it is never too late to walk the right path.

  • @heiwa2007. Respectfully, but Hindus, Muslims,

Buddhists, Jews, etc.etc. dont find the Bible

is their " manual for living". Does that put them

on the wrong path ?. The Cosmos is here for all

of us, the path is only made straight if we stop thinking with pre-programmed propaganda and see the freedom that lies in being non-biased.

Jeshua Ben Jussuf ( =Jesus) said ! My Father´s House has many Mansions" Now, what do you think he meant by that ?

  • " Bizarre"? I certainly made the most of my youth through travel, learning, and in-depth experiences ( Including

Woodstock and living in an Ashram )

I am the Mom of 3 perfect grown children who

were raised WITHOUT prejudice towards ANYONE, and WITHOUT religion which is the

Opium of the masses. Nobody can avoid pain but if we get it we grow to be better humans. I dont know what your idea of " wild living" is. ? but Buddha smiles and Jesus had humor. !!

  • munichlady,

You seem to think you're wise, smart and good but you're judging yourself using your own benchmarks instead of using God's holy standards.

If hippiedom is your lifestyle of choice, you're free to exercise your God-given free will to follow your heart. As for me and my household, I choose to follow Jesus and receive all that is promised us in the Holy Scriptures for this life and in the world to come.

  • @achahei. How would you presume to know how I am as a human ? and how do you presume to know

what " God´s" standards are ? and what is this

" hippieism" ? trip? I´m ex US Army. We were talking about " youth" experiences.!! Forgot that eh? Also forgotten that the Bible was written by

humans, and I´ve never met one yet who was not

fallible. But, dream on. I hope you wont be too

upset when you pass over and find your Soul Energy faced with Karma and a lot of reincarnations.

  • munichlady,

God's standards are in the Holy Bible. Care to read?

All Scriptures are God-inspired although they are written by human beings.

You denounce all religions earlier as "opiate for the people" but I see you're into Buddhist beliefs. Isn't that a contradiction?

You appear to be a combative person and has a special odium for Christianity. Yet I wish you peace and happiness & the wisdom and the humility to seek after the Way, the Truth and the Life. May God help your unbelief.

  • Buddhism is NOT a belief, its a way of regarding the Mystery which Life is. I´m not " into" it, I take notice of it as I take particular notice of the FACT that Buddhism abhors violence. No burnings/tortures/and ethnic cleansings etc.

It is the pinnacle of arrogance to push your brainwashed lifestyle towards me and infer I am

" an unbeliever". You may feel more at home in

the Dark Ages. How arrogant it is to claim YOU know what God sets for standards. Isn´t pride one of the 7 deadly sins ?

  • munichlady,

I see that you are under the control of anger and hatred. Before further harm is done, may you go to the One who offers you the peace that passes all understanding.

Jesus said, "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid." ~ John 14:27

  • @achahei FOOL the bible was written to be a script to follow by the same mind control freaks trying to take over the world, the new world order, gays dont choose to be gay, if thats the case please tell me the time and date you chose to be straight.

  • It's OK to be a fool for Christ for I'll end up in heaven one day. It's high honor, actually.

I see you have misconceptions and misinformation about the Holy Bible. Seriously, you ought to enroll in a Bible study class in a church near you if you want to know the truth.

The Bible says that sodomy is an abomination, so it's not inborn. That is the truth since God is our Creator.

  • @achahei NO you ough tto eroll in a study, I have read the bible 3 time via the greek. the difference comes down to "you believe other human beings to tell you about God " I let god tell me personally, you've been duped, SORRY that you need to live in an Illusion, good luck

  • p_wacky,

What, you've read the Bible 3 times and yet you were not transformed? No inspiration, no epiphanies, no tears of repentance, gratitude or joy? You've got to read God's holy Word in the right spirit; read it with an open mind and with pure motives, not with a fault-finding attitude. Rid yourself first of hostility, prejudices and pride, then read it again and you'll be a changed man. The Scripture writers were inspired and led by the Holy Spirit in their endeavors (2 Timothy 3:16).

  • @achahei. If you are SO into the Bible, you might

be interested to know that Johnny Mathis was

gay. ? hard-core christians do not tolerate homosexuality, yet you like his music. My goodness, what a sin you will have to confess.

  • munichlady,

Ma'am, Christians are supposed to hate the sin but love the sinner. Don't you know? Have you not heard?

  • @munichlady

Let he who is without sin cast the first stone. Like achahei said. Christians, as well as people of all religions are supposed to hate the sin but love the sinner. I suppose you have never done anything in your life that was sinful. If his being gay is truly sinful, then he will answer for it in due time. Who are you to judge.

  • Johnny não foi feliz nessa interpretação. Faltou romantismo e o arranjo não ajudou. A melhor interpretação dessa música, acredito, seja, com a dupla Charles Asnavour e Elton Jones.

  • This English translation, but Aznavour in French can really express the sentiments of this so cruel song. I am a 72 year Indian living in the South of France, an the French quality of life, their feeling for life, pacify those sometime bitter missed opportunities.

  • very well said 2020 im 65 and i did get it all and kept her my love caroline

  • y00sta....THANK YOU SIR..I so tried to get it all together..NO LUCK..BLESS YOU & CAROLINE..Makes me very HAPPY that you have it all......Best Regards,,RIC!!!

  • Yestarday I was also young and now I'm old but Ilike to listen

this song by the voice of Mathis. Thank you.

  • I've always loved Mathis' voice. He's wonderful in person and via recording. Supreme talent.

  • Why did you comment like that? dont hurt us..if you want others to respect you, respect them first. tnx. Im not old and not so young, but i like Mr. Mathis songs.

  • I'm now approching 70. This song reminds me of my youth, my dreams that never materialized. I still love to play this song. Reminds me of my yesteryears.

  • vanaala1...MY ole cyberspace friend..Im approaching 62..my dreams NEVER materialzed also..BUT WE CAN NOT GO BACK..just souvenirs and great memories..Wish..LIKE YOU..to go back to ONE YOUTHFUL day...CAREFREE & HAPPY..BLESS YOU.TAKE CARE.."YESTERDAY is HISTORY..TOMORROW is MYSTERY..TODAY is a GIFT and that's why WE CALL it the PRESENT!!"

  • @vanaala1

that makes me sad but realistic, im only 45 and still livin my dreams that i hope will materialize.........even tho he has a polo neck on teeheeheee xxxx

  • @vanaala1 iu can totally relate i guess we cant change the past only try to make each day better then what we did with our yesterdays

  • @vanaala1 I am 73 and when I awake I don't find enough time to fulfill those many exciting projects awaiting me the next 24 hours. Johnny Mathis has been with me for most of those 73 years. There are many of us who have lived through many, many seasons. I meet some of them. We pool our seasons and some delicious are then shared. If they don't know Johnny Mathis, his voice enrichens our pool of goodies. The past is the past - now is the time for the fresh goodies!

  • @hommefriday

Past is never past in the mind: the memory is always young!

  • @vanaala1

Johnny Mathis "The World I Threw Away"

  • @vanaala1 Sire, eh,

  • @vanaala1 Listen to the other Azenevour composition " La Boheme" - and there you have path to tread at 70.

The French live all their lives. Living is their main path. I am over 70, retired to the south of France on a modest pension, and boy I just can't find the time to do all the living offered me. (There are so many over 70s just waiting for new songs to sing happy song together, taste new moments of pleasure together, never thinking of life - just doing it! Bonne chance (I am asian)

  • @hommefriday Thank you for your inspirational words. I want to grow up and think like you. I don't have far to catch up to you (smile). I need another life time to do all the things I haven't yet done. Life is what you make it.

  • @hommefriday i need to take your words of wisdom, im 67 and cant get arround but i can live instead of bitchin about geting old lol have a great day my fellow human

  • @vanaala1 Yes, same for me, I used to listen to this when I was in my early 30's and thought how much it reminded me of myself. I listen to it now and do the same as you do, it reminds me of my yesteryears as well. When we're young I wonder if it would help us alter our conduct at the time if we could have a glimpse into the future??

  • I really WAS young yesterday...What the Hell?....

  • Just wonderful!!!!!!!!

  • Mr. MATHIS..YOU HAVE ALWAYS BEEN THE BEST..WE ALL LOVED YOU SIR...GOD BLESS for all of the HAPPY MEMORIES you have GIVEN US.....

  • It was a single for Dusty Springfield in the early seventies, thats the version i favour most, notwithstanding that Johnny Mathis is a god!! one of the worlds greatest vocalistes

  • Roy Clark had a hit with this song. Also Tony Bennett, Andy Williams, Robert Goulet & Ed Ames did this song

  • Mathis or Asnavouris the first singer of this song???

  • Great singer

  • Yesterday when I was young...

    Yesterday the moon was blue

And every crazy day brought something new to do

I used my magic age as if it were a wand

  • What a beautiful voice!

  • one of the most beautiful voices ever....

  • Johnny's soft and beautiful voice is good for any song.

  • It sounds very much like Roy Clark's version. The two men have similar voices, at least when performing this song. I wish Johnny would have done the spoken introduction, though.

  • not as good as Charles Aznavour's original Hier Encore. Charlie could go through notes and pitches.... now my boss is here... I must go

  • Amazing - Brilliant - Comforting - Distinguished - Excellent - Fantastic - Great - Honorable - Incredible - Joyous........and who says one cannot express in words how much one likes somebody??? The Great Johnny Mathis - BRAVO TO THE POWER OF N !!! and to you rovingeye2 - thanks A Z!illion for sharing!!! Best wishes!

  • Nice...........Very good selection of pictures from his many years. Johnny aged nicely. I wish Michael Jackson had done the same and not tampered with all that plastic surgery.

  • Pure voice.....

    Thank you for sharing. :)

  • JOHN..You voice is the best TENOR..like sweet butter.... THANK YOU for the post!!

  • gotas caen sobre my cabasa

  • Great arrangement of this song and great interpretation by The Master, our Johnny. Great video and pictures too.

  • One of the best (and pure) voices ever... Never a wrong note anywhere.... Great Stuff......!!!!! 'Dan

  • Very touching. Amazing lyrics sung by

Johnny Mathis. He was so incredibly talented. I first heard him as a child.

Thank you, for posting this video.

    Lovely!!!!

  • great voice, Johnny really touches the heart and soul

  • Wow, Johnny Mathis is just a class act! This is a beautiful rendition of this song.

  • i dont like it as much as the original version by Charles Aznavour

  • BREATHTAKING BREATHTAKING BREATHTAKING. Johnny's voice and this song.

A masterpiece of music about remorse.

  • Unfortunately, this reminds me of the death my sister and brother. My brother loved Johnny Mathis' music but never lived to enjoy it as we do. He too wasted so many years. A fitting reminder for me now in the twilight of my life......and there is so much that I want to do and so much that I wished I had done. Peace to you in your lives. Tom

  • Hi there... I too lost my family very young.....somehow the songs of Johnny helped me.....I too have many things I wish I had done or would like to change, but God help me, I cannot. I too am in my twilight years.......God bless.

  • I love the deep bass in the background. It complements Johnny's high octave notes. Are those other instruments the harpsichord or the harp? I like how Johnny sings this differently from Aznevour . The composer sings several runs of syllables , pauses then speeds through syllables again. Just a difference in style- not a put down at all

  • The instrument in the break is a Yamaha electric piano-harpsichord, a real popular instrument in rock and pop during the early seventies. It's set here on harpsichord but it can give you either or both. It's blended version is perhaps best heard on Johnny's version of "Bridge Over Troubled Water" from 1970, the year before this one. My favorite version, by the way.

  • thanks for the clarification. I shall be looking for the Yamaha when I listen to Bridge Over Troubled Water. I will reserve my judgment about Johnny's version till I hear it but very likely I will side with you IF THIS YAMAHA is doing its job in the background :)

  • I found Johnny's version and was surprised to see that I had already responded to a youtuber's negative comments on it. Here it is verbatim:

    terestoye (2 weeks ago)

I find nothing wrong with Johnny's superb interpretation. His voice reaches heights no other cover has gone. At 3:49 his voice is flying to ease your mind. Perhaps you were staring at the psychedelic images when the record was playing. Very hypnotic. SO I agree with you ,johnny's version is the best.

  • In the 1980s Yamaha replaced the electric piano-harpsichord with the electronic one. I enjoy playing both of them but there's something about the electric version that I prefer. Can't put my finger on why, though. Softer, more full-bodied tones, I suppose. Johnny's superb mastery of so many pop songs was so often teamed with excellent arrangements and great production values during this period. Mathis doesn't even need the reverb but it only serves to make him sound even more phenomenal!

  • probably your dad is also a baby bloomer like me.

  • So beautiful....

  • It is such a sad song for some, but for me, it just reminds me of a time when everything was so much simpler and the music more enjoyable. You could actually hear the words, listen to the song, and hold a conversation at the same time. Who would want to drown out Mr. Mathis, anyway?

  • I do agree. A song from back in the day.

  • HudyHoo13, yes for some of us it is a sad song. I've been able to identify with the lyrics of this song for many years. I've lead a life where I have a few regrets. I do better today than I ever have but it's took a lot of hard knocks to get here. Getting older has made me appreciate the good that comes into my life and not just take it for granted. Johnny does this so well and I too can't imagine anyone wanting to drown him out.

  • Great singer.

  • time waits for no one

  • then let us profit of the short time of our life!!!

  • Haha, how the times are a'changing, even from when he was not so young..'til now!
