This is a very old story, often called "The Twa Sisters" or "The Two Sisters", which exists in many different versions with different melodies. I've heard a version set in England called "The Bonny Bows". According to an article on Wikipedia, there are Scandinavian versions of the story, and even one as far afield as Hungary. A haunted fiddle or harp seems to be an idea with some staying power.
I think this arrangement is Jody Stecher's. His version was reworked and rearranged considerably. I love how this song has become so popular with so many different interpretations
I think there are English and Scottish variants of this song, sometimes known as The Two Sisters or The Cruel Sister. Very nice version and I enjoyed your video, very atmospheric.
Fortunately, this ballad - or versions of it - is widespread in the Germanic world. There's versions of it as far up as Finland, and most assuredly there are versions sung in Scotland.
That's true - there are many different versions of this ballad in many different languages, and one of the earliest print versions does come from Scotland. This particular version happens to be Irish. :-)
@jonscul I think the song's lyrics have changed as it has been passed down through the ages. I've noticed differences in the lyrics depending on performers too.
I have heard it with antother singer. Gillian i think her name was.
This version is for me the true one. There are many other here at youtube. Something about two sister walking down the street.. But i am so glad i find this version.
One of my favorite songs, I haven't heard this song since i was so young and happy. Tears won't stop falling

Wow! What great and unusual song? I really do love the song but feel kinda weird about loving it? Know what I mean?

I felt very strange making this video, bit it drew me in and it had to be done. Paul & Kim Caudell really make it come to life...

Not that unusual, the story is called "The Cruel Sister" (among other names), it's quite widespread.
