Well it doesn't really matter that eSATA isn't as fast as gigabit ethernet. Your platters (even all of the drives put together) aren't going to spin fast enough to saturate gigabit Ethernet anyway, none the less eSATA. That is, if your network is laid out in a logical and smart fashion.....which to your credit it appears to be.
My question is; does the drobopro include services to sync your data offsite? I imagine for 5tb that would take a while and use a ton of bandwith, but still.
My heart is palpitating over this setup except for the green technology switch. I had a problem with one of those switchs a few monthes ago about it not ccoming up fast enough for my cluster.
I got a Drobo Pro for work and we love it. I made it 16tb and we just added in the Hard drives are needed. It's full now so we are looking at adding in another drobo. It's alot cheaper than our IBM SAN but we only use it to archive our older projects. I do still back it up once ever 4 months with LTO5 tapes. Great product!
Would you consider placing your movies separately on another NAS or storage server? Since movies aren't viewed regularly a separate box could sleep until call upon. Plus if you have the original DVDs duplication on the box would be unnecessary - more room for movies!
Very nice setup for a home data center. I would eventually organize it a little more, maybe get a rack. Do you mind listing all your devices and the order they're connected in?
You spent probably $1500 on a drobo pro, and you only have 5 TB of in it? Dude a little part of me just died :(
You are a lucky man, I envy the drobo pro you have
I was going to pick one up tonight but X-mas and all, I figured more should go to the family, maybe next year. Instead I just got myself a 3 bay hotswapper and PCI to Sata adaptor... I guess I could have used my extra 4 sata ports on my motherboard, but they are for RAID and I wasn't prepared to figure that all out LOL RAID noob here
I have a Watchgaurd Firebox firewall. I cannot get any packets to be sent from the external. I don't think it's a blocked site problem. Any suggestions?
Very nice setup! You ever consider flooding? Since some of your servers are on the floor, if there were to be a leak then it looks like the servers/hardware on the floor would be ruined :(
Very nice. I like to see a simple home setup like this that is practical, instead of a huge mess of expensive humming servers that cause people to ask "WHAT ARE YOU USING ALL THIS FOR" (the response usually being to the effect of "uuuhhhh...."). This seems to be exactly what you need for what you are doing. Props.
YOU BUY DROBO PRO FÖR OVER 1000$ AND YOU HAVE GB HDD IN IT?!?!?!?!?!?!

Bluray 16 gigs? What lame Blurays are only 16Gigs? Movies are more like 25 to 40 gigs.

If I were you I'd move your wireless router antenna down horizontally so it radiates to the upper floor(s) better.

You really should install a cheap water alarm on the floor of your basement.

I love the Drobo Pro for reliability even when a drive does fail it can rebuild a new one in a few hours.

You should never run electrical lines right beside data cables.....causes EMI!
jle0311 11 months ago
@jle0311 That's why networks have data correction, for this guy's small network the couple of flipped bits won't cause too much of a slow down.
