OMG! These kids from a Catholic high school need some lessons on the Yiddish "ch" sound. It's not L'Hiam. It's like you're calling up a honker, boys. Best I can describe it!
I don't know why I got a thumbs down, either! When they did the remake of Fiddler on Broadway a couple of years ago, all the reviews on that one said it, too. It wasn't "Jewish enough." I directed Fiddler in 2007 for a non-professional theatre, and let me tell ya, every one of my actors, mostly "goyim," sounded like a "real frum chasid."
weird. i think only a bit of effort is involved to make it sound authentic. research thats it. at least the tallitot look good not like some productions where its literally a self made sheet...oy. i cant imagine the broadway version not being jewish enough? werent most of the actors playing jews actually jews?
Alfred Molina? Italian. But yes, there were quite a few Jewish actors in the production. But...yeah, that's what the reviews were saying, initially. Anyway, you're right about the research. I'm Jewish, but in my production, I didn't leave much to chance. I did a lot of research. Still, when all was said and done, and I can say this because I AM Jewish, get a bunch of us in the room and there are always arguments! LOL! Some of us disagreed on certain choices that were made. Oh, well!
yeah we're doing that right now and our director sucks and doesn't get the point of this. she makes lazar wolf like he's 90 so he doesn't dance much. and our choreographer sucks too she only makes a few people dance and everybody else does random sh*t.
Russians are supposed to hold their vodka, unlike the Jews. What happened?

The set and costume work on this is really amazing for a high school production. Everything else is good, aside from Fyedka's high G.
Doing part of the Bottle Dance during To Life is an interesting choice. I'm not sure it worked out all that well, but it was definitely different.
