This was my adulthood star wars. This movie is implanted in my phsyci for ever. This blew all modern film away in special effects, music, story, directing. You can feel their feelings in the music, expressions, acting. Mixing love, death, religion, history, science. you either love it or hate it. you get it or don't. I was fortunate to see it on the big screen,it was amazing!!! This movie takes you to differnt level of awareness, touches on dream state levels of thought...
This movie is a work of genius. I have never seen a deeper and more intellectual film dealing with the theme of unstoppable mortality. Her impending death is made so beautiful because she is so at peace with it - it is his duty to "finish my story" as she says - to make perfect her own struggle with death. There is, possibly, no better scene in movie history than the last one, moving from the reflourishing tree, from which he plucks the seed, buries it and the movie ends. No film like this.
the movie is aslo about how hugh experience he´s wifes cancer...
Thats what her book is really about the soilders invading "the cancer taking over her body" and hugh has to stop it "in the book as a solider" in real life as a doctor.
-Hugh constantly being dressed in dark tones as Rachel was constantly white.
-The tattooed ring on his finger was the first of the many "tree"-rings on his arms. Therefor loosing his ring symbolized the start of his grief/journey. Finding the ring ended it.
The music just complemented the film to such an ultimate extent. Just beautiful.
@cooltune i never noticed that before. i wonder where my ring starts, and where it ends, if it ends. i love this life and i hate it too, opposites are a constant, happiness does not exist without suffering. great comment
i dont fucking get it and its irritating because everyone says its a beautiful film and they love it, but i just got done watching it and i have no clue on what just happened
The whole movie is about an experience of darkness to light. Its basically saying that the only real way that you can experience life is when you die. Its what the Mayans use to believe
I'd argue that in the end his life finally opens up because he realizes he is going to/ has to die. That's the only way to experience life. At that moment all his previous lives come together in the culmination of his final death at Xiabalba.
@SJamesGray I think the same thing. So many people miss the whole "I'm going to die" aspect of this film and think that it only focuses on his feeling of loss and helplessness in regards to his wife only.
I think she is obviously part of him now but that the deeper story lies in his realization that he is going to die as well.
This is in fact a large part of the fear and anxiety that people feel when they lose a loved one. Their OWN death then seems more real, more possible.
Right on, I'd say that 's the whole point. The realization of death takes different forms for many people, but if we can come to some acceptance with it, liberation arrives.
@Sabbatai You are so right about this. When death takes someone we love, we curse it, because it separates us. But when it comes for *us* we need to see it as MERCY - it's there to reunite people. And the greatest realization is that it has *always been* Mercy - even for the ones it took before that made us hate it in the first place.
The alchemists always said that the material realm was "fallen" (The Eidola) and only representative and symbolic of "the real world" (The Eida).
I found the trailer by accident on youtube and damn...the movie simply blew me away. Dunno how I could miss this piece of art till now. It simply brings tears and chills to my spine... A true masterpiece. Period.
@junnkster i wanted to see this movie because of a still picture of the tree of life on a video.. I played the movie and before the movie was finished i had already downloaded the OST... I think it's the definition of masterpiece! The symbolisms, the artwork, the plays... OH GOD!!!
this movie just blew me away like I've never been before.. This is a real piece of dream, magic, fairy... I saw it on video, bought it on the spot, and regret like hell I missed it on movie theater !

Subtle nuances in the film:
-Hugh constantly being dressed in dark tones as Rachel was constantly white.
-The tattooed ring on his finger was the first of the many "tree"-rings on his arms. Therefor loosing his ring symbolized the start of his grief/journey. Finding the ring ended it.
The music just complemented the film to such an ultimate extent. Just beautiful.
