I don't get it, he wasn't acting in these scenes but starred as a sword master
Does that mean he simply arranged the chronography and mentored the actors? Or was he actually fighting himself? It seems odd to think a 85 year old man was acting in pirates of the Caribbean..
@sparkymmilarky no... when he was younger, he was in the darth vader suit and did the fights, but he choreographed everything from lord of the rings to the different fights in these 2 vids as well as star wars... He did more fighting whe he was younger however, and yes, you are right, common sense dictates that an 85 year old man is not going to be an active fencer...
I should say however, that Anderson choreographed some memorable and iconic fights that we all enjoyed watching. He should be remembered and respected for that.
@joelzenny I actually agree, as someone who practices rapier and longsword in the Capo Ferro style. I find myself saying 'dead, dead, dead' whenever a rapier is used. The longsword fight in First Knight is pretty amazing until the middle part when 'the bad guy' (forget his name) starts to -really- telegraph his swings.
As for the saber style fights: I don't have a clue and can't comment. They do look impressive.
For a much better fight, look at Basil Rathbone and Tyrone Power in the classic Zorro (Go to "Mark of Zorro Don Diego de la Vega vs. Captain Pasquale" on You Tube. You Tube won't let me embed the URL here). Much more dangerous, much more varied, much more believable, from 2 fencing masters who actually knew what they were doing because in the old days, actors were trained to fence.
@jrgorilla1 I'm not "insulting" anyone. As I said, as a fight choreographer myself, I find his work to be not as good as others' work. Look at "William Hobbs best movie sword fights" on You Tube as well as the the title above that shows Tyrone Power and Rathbone instead of being so offended by my opinion and dismissing it.
@ratholin nice how you can't really discuss what's being presented and instead attack. Those of us who actually do this work have different opinions on who's work is more realistic, based on several factors. Do some homework and watch other masters at work before you react to someone's opinion, because that's only what is is: an opinion. And I stand by it.
@joelzenny that's what I meant by sour grapes. You may "do this work" but you're nothing you'll always be nothing and children will never run around inspired by this "work you do" you're a poor sad little man who is mad that people will mourne a master but if you fell off the face of the earth no one would even think about it.
@joelzenny absolutly agree with you. Basil Rathbone was right in specially choosing those boots to accent his lunge. He's a very good fighter. however it bothers me that the fight was spead up a bit...
As a former fight choreographer, I have to say that his work looks pretty boring. He was a saber champion, and all his fights are styled after saber contact, even if he's using rapier or foil. Not convincing, repetitive movements, mainly cuts to the head that repeat and keep being parried.
@juandenz2008 trained at the London Academy of Dramatic Art, certified by the Society of British Fight Directors, worked in Chicago and New York choreographing fights for numerous classical and modern Off Loop and Off Off Broadway theatre pieces,. Also trained in classical fencing for a few years.
I just learned that Bob Anderson also choreographed the three original Star Wars films ... which was kept a secret for a long time. I became a fan after first seeing Princess Bride. He was a real artist wth his choreography. He will be missed.
@bushin64 Think he did only Empire and Jedi where he played Vader's fight scenes. The first one was Prowse and he was a lot slower (but not too sure about the choreagraphy). Fortunately he was only fighting Sir Alec. I must admit I did not know about his existence until recently and it's sad that he was given the credit he deserved back then. Regardless, he will be remembered now.

@joelzenny Hey, come on, pal. This stuff was coreographed by a master. If you want to insult a dead wizard of fighting, go somewhere else.
