  • they are tracking you with that phone.. and they can also change your mind waves too. Connect with yourself.. not with satans apps

  • what were you thinking.. you should have answered his call.. that would have showed another task the phone can do.. it can hold calls and browse web at the same time over wifi and while on cell data network..

  • that was LOL calculator...

  • i want the emulation dual s.o. iphone and android in the n900

  • iphone= no brain needed n900= YOU NEED BRAINS!

  • @snuski that is the explanation of why Iphone is so popular: there are more "average" people out there, than brain-gifted ones, or at least patience-gifted ones to learn how to use a device like this, or even see the potential, or care about it.

Most people out there want something cool, and easy to operate, and apple does that not allowing you to touch basically anything to prevent users from doing damage.

WinMo you can edit register with some damage possible, android more, here even more

  • I have my days with my N900...mainly because you really have to think. I mean, anything you want to do you can pretty much do on this phone. I'm definitely glad I made the switch.

  • Very useful video for someone looking into buying this device.

  • i just got mine yesterday n its not symbian its maemo 5.

trus me this fone is amazin the internet is super fast for a phone

  • mad phone, its not even a normal phone, this thing is out of this world, thumbs for the maemo.

  • that game you were playing looked like f zero gx

  • Hi,

about 2 years ago, I guess, there came out Ubuntu Mobile. What about installing it on N900, is it possible ?

Nice video by the way, I like this mobile phone. Just the thing, that nokia will leave this device after some time (I guess after maybe 3 updates) and then if you have software problems they say you should get the new version of n900, whatever it's called - that's nokia1).

It's a great phone but the software will be left and then the users will have a problem.

    Peace

  • The future is open!! Linux rules!!

  • google nexus one is kinda crappy. the droid is much better. secondly google doesnt deserve anything from any of us. its the other way around. they make billions off us. they get payed by companies because of our internet traffic. dont ever ask some one to support a half assed product.

  • this rimjob6 guy is a total fag. every one please rank his comments down.

  • Comment removed

  • Keep in mind, the N900 is being pushed to run an unusually high number of apps. If you had an iPhone, you wouldn't have such a multi-tasking case in the first place. For a resistive screen, the N900 is actually quite good though it may not seem that way in the video. nothing beats experiencing it hands-on if you get a chance. :)

  • What about the HTC HD2? Since it's got a better processor and more RAM than the N900 it should do better, although the N900 has 768 mb of virtual memory

  • True, just tried it today and I was blown away! The phone was sooo quick and responsive, my girlfriend was convinced it's capacitive :) lol

  • N900 runs Maemo Linux, which open to the point that, install your kernel and whatever distro, and run it, as you like.

    NOT SYMBIAN!

I can assure you, Linux does not get annoying... Tons of software available

  • @kalapeaX123 Witter is not working. Do you know any Gravity-like app for N900? I miss Gravity!!

  • @kostyxaz n00b, it is not symbian XD

  • @kostyxaz Maemo is not Symbian, though. Also, that's an extreme situation where a lot of apps are being run - the iphone would have imploded with that much happening.

There's also the fact that many users nowadays are overclocking their N900 to 950mhz stable (which, btw, is giving better battery life due to 125mhz idle), which would make this experiment much smoother.

  • iphone killer not even comparable.. iphone did set the benchmark for smart phones. but the n900 killed it .. plus open source developement fuck steve jobs

  • iwas planing to dish out mine money for iphone this sunday, but when i sow n900, i got second thoughts! i hate too much choise :)

  • i actually got an iphone in the end after a few reviews of n900, n900 is a good phone, but its not for me, 5-6 years ago i would go only for n900! now when i am old and laizy - iphone :)

  • Hi Steve Jobs. :)

  • does this have data encryption?

  • can anyone say something about the battery? i`ve heared there is a problem with it.

  • no complaints. lasts more than a full day with moderate use.

  • @archebyte So 8 hour in high usage..just like my Galaxy..pretty crappy, bigger battery needed..

  • Very good battery life. i use amsn "webcam", listen to music, watch video, IM are on all the day i have 3 email so 3 push , i surf all the day.

and the battery last for a day and some hours. that usually with my iphones 3g and 3gs last a half day..

  • very good battery life

  • @FlorinU21 Mine last longer than my iPhone 3GS' one.

  • let the iphone fans and nokia haters watch this video! they will suizide!

  • is there a gui version of the command top?

  • wat network are you using the n900 on and what kind of data plan are you runnin on it.

  • i can use that phone for my calculus class thats cool

  • so hows the sound quality in nokia n900? can you compare it to anything? because i have n5800 and sound is crystal clear! but gaming just won't work on it.

  • n95 8gb has better speakers than 5800, trust me

  • what does it have to do with this? i asked about n900. i don't need good speakers on phone i use earphones

  • well then, buy good earphones...

  • good earphones don't make good sound quality. i have some old 200mb mp3 there and when you listen with the same headphones you can hear difference but now im asking is n900 sound quality good or better then 5800? well 5800 is a music phone then n900 is like a pc

  • because its old. It doesn't make a difference on new phones. No noticeable difference

  • ...*sigh* there are difference even in new phones. i have compared 5800 to n97 and 5800 had much better quality but your missing my real point by far. im asking does n900 have good sound quality. not good speakers not the n95 im asking about n900

  • You should go to the store and check it

  • ... jeesus. if im buyng 600e phone i would go check it BUT because store where ive been there isn't a real n900 and thats the f-ing reason why im asking about the quality. -_- your not really so "fast" eh?

  • "isnt a real n900". Thought about going to a Nokia store instead of a local chinese shop?

  • oh dear god.... sorry but in here finland i went to few shops what were near me and no there wasn't a real n900 and they are saying that they aren't getting to any n900 after christmas. they are mock ups made from plastic and could you please stop being a fucking troll -_-

  • yes and Im telling you, dont go to local shops, go to a NOKIA STORE or to an AUTHORIZED nokia dealer. If there are ones in Serbia, Im sure there are in Finland, too. And if they have the phone here, then they must have it in finland for sure

  • Wow chill pill time... I played with a N900 mid October in the Nokia store in Helsinki, that's what he meant.

  • about the music player: no playlists and no equalizer

  • @NeDamoKosovo00 Playlists are available @ N900, Equalizer is not necessary with good earphones

  • not for me, i like to get that last thing high, sounds more pure. the "normal" just sucks compared to that

  • @NeDamoKosovo00 pa naravno da ne damo kosovo!!! And N900 is a great phone!

  • Well, at least to me the sound quality of N900 is crystal clear. I usually use it to play 192-256 kbps Ogg Vorbis music files and enjoy it.

  • copy/paste works in all apps. Ctrl+C Ctrl-V all you want :).

    voice dialing is not supported.

  • Actually it does... When I used it there were no problems at all - after I kept 4 vids on Youtube running at the same time it started to lag.

Before that everything went smoothly - and it was a pre-production firmware I was using....

And on the contrary - none of the other devices support Youtube in the browser...

  • why would you play 4 vidz at thesame time on a cell phone?

  • youtube is very slow on N900 and it doesn't depend of the multitasking.

  • even on 3g and wifi???

  • Wrong. It's as smooth as can be on Wifi or 3G. Maybe you saw a pre production model.

  • how is that punch-out working? is it a special version for the n900 or is it a rom running on an emulator?

(if its the latter: are there working emulators for super nes?)

  • oh and btw: how can you play these games on german devices? german n900 dont have 4 dedicated arrow-keys, but instead only 2 keys (left and right), with up and down being doubled on left and right respectively.

  • the emulator allows remapping of the keys to any setup. you will to play around with the options.

  • ok, thats a good think to know. thanks.

  • Press CTRL + space to switch between English and German layouts. It´s no problem at all :D English layout has all the directional keys.

  • how is that possible? how are the arrow-keys mapped on a german keyboard if you set it to english layout? are the buttons left (comma) and above ( Ä ) mapped as arrow-keys if you set it to english? do you know by any chance?

  • @archebyte from the reviews i've read it says that the software is very raw and when running programs the n900 is nut running at full speeds because Nokia don't want the device to over heat. And how often do this device gets firmware updates?

  • Personally, I have not noticed slow-downs.

This is the first firmware update. technically, this is not a typical update. it is the production firmware. Nokia released this to allow pre-production devices to become current and also for anybody who hoses their unit and wants to reset it. updates are not often but there should be at least one more this year - to support full portrait-mode.

  • that looks a bit like my N95 8GB. everything running in the background except of course for the fact that you need a 3rd party app to use youtube and games havent goot this good graphics but yeah.. all the same :) I really miss the media contol keys in this phone cos like when you were watching the youtube clip the music didnt stop.. Btw apparently you need to be a real big geek to install apps on this phone. Is that so? Is it much harder than on s60v3?

  • as for installing apps, I feel to the contrary. Its quite simple to install apps from the Application Manager. If there is a data-connection, its a one click install. no geekiness required. Most of the apps in the video are available in the Extras catalog for free download.

  • but what happens if you don't have internet? I generally just download all apps to my phone (i categorise them in E/my apps/ folder) and only install one when i actually need it.

Or say, i'm showing off this cool app to my friends who also have the N900 and they ask me to send an app to them (via bluetooth). would they be able to install it?

  • yes its possible. its linux after all! but this would be for an advanced user. the packages are basically .deb files. provided there are no dependency issues, the file can be transferred and installed manually offline. The App Manager makes it simple for novice users but with a tweak not recommended for novices (Red-Pill) it can be used to install a file offline.

  • see this is what i meant in my first comment.. that you have to be a geek to be able to do that :D

I've always tried to avoid linux on desktops, because its just more compicated than any other OS, but i want to be able to install my apps offline so i guess that means long hours on forums and suffering through it all :S

And it also means i can't just send stuff to my mates' N900s cause they wont be able to install it either. This is such a ridiculous idea almost as bad as apple's iphones...

  • I guess a lot can be said about keeping things simple because a majority of users are not savvy and wont be passing around files.

Enabling the Red-Pill wont require hours on forums. It requres three finger-taps and the word 'matrix'

If your friends are capable of navigating the file-manger for swapping package files, they should be able to take the red-pill easily. It doesn't require the use of the console. the iphone does not provide this capability without breaking the law (jailbreak)

  • Well it's not exactly hard to launch a file manager from the desktop and then press send via bluetooth to a file :D thanks for the info! Can't wait to get my hand on one of these. - and hopefully it will be easier to use than i initially thought.

  • One more question. I've a chance to try one of these today, but even after five minutes i wasnt able to find a way to put the calendar's today view onto the desktop. Which displays the date and the notes (if there are any for the given day). Do you know how to do that?

And also the same with the music player. Or will that just appear by itself on the desktop if i start playing a song?

    Thanks,

  • The one major thing that worrys me about this phone is the battery life. Archebyte hows the battery life been? especially running a lot of apps...etc

  • the battery lasts an entire day easily on moderate use. 30min calling, casual browsing, IM, Email, FM, and some gaming. However, there have been reports that the production firmware has significant improvements on the battery-life front. I will be updating the N900 firmware tonight.

  • Cheers for that...can you let us know if there is any significant changes

  • archebyte thank you for the videos. You were one of the 300 selected to get the nokia 900, what were your comments to nokia about the phone (likes and dislikes) etc.

    Thank you

  • take a look at my blog for some of my thoughts. My primary concern was lack of portrait-mode support but Nokia has already announced that this will come in before Christmas. Ovi maps was a disappointment. Its not comparable to 3.0 on the S60.

  • @archebyte Ovi 3.0 will be available on release we are told.

  • @dansus99 The current version on my N900 was 1.0. Two major-version jump seems unusual. but that would be great if the released Ovi version was as feature rich as the S60.

  • @archebyte I presume your running 41-10 with prototype hardware?

When the N900 is out, send it back for a reflash and it should have all the latest goodies. :)

  • @dansus99 the firmware has been released. I will be flashing it shortly.

  • Ovi Maps is 1.0 in the official release.

  • @archebyte I just wish people would stop comparing 1.0 and 3.0. All it means is an iteration of Ovi Maps, nothing more.

Maemo is basically Debian for ARM with a Hildon UI; You can't just stick Ovi Maps on your PC and expect it to work, can you?

(Although the lack of features doesn't follow...)

  • How much RAM it has?

  • 256MB + 768MB SWAP

  • where you have this ti85 emulator??

  • Google maemo select applications. Nokia's Maemo site should be first on the list of results.

  • Thanks for this.

  • when will n900 come out in europe ?

  • They have sent all the phones for Finnish shops after the first week of December.

By the end of the year my guess.

  • Where did you find this out?

  • From the retailers at Finland.

News also say that they've sent the first n900s to companies that bought it from them.

The retailers say that they should receive the n900s they ordered during weeks 48 and 49.

  • Same would go for the rest of the Europe, too... Preorders have already been shipped and they should arrive next week.

  • Oh god that is mind blowing!! And Apple was saying that multitasking is useless feature. That intuitive multitasking as in N900 will really change the way we use mobile phones. Can't wait I get my own N900 soooon.

  • Pretty impressive when you consider DESKTOP Linux struggles with YouTube a lot of the time.

  • YouTube plays fine on my Linux (Ubuntu) install, perhaps better than on my XP netbook.

  • @archebyte I didn't mean it was really bad, far from it. But its pretty well known though that flash on Linux is nowhere near as well optimised as on Windows. The version on the N900 though is likely to be a LOT more optimised as its not a simple port like Windows x86 to Linux x86 is.

That said I use Linux a lot more aggressively than Windows, leaving Firefox open for days/weeks whereas Windows is almost always a fresh boot.

  • I have a similar problem on my ubuntu 9.04 install. I can view youtube, but the experience is not as good as on Windows installed on the same machine.

  • Damn, it's quite responsive with all those applications running.

  • Ohh one question. It does have a GSM/UMTS modem built in. I know this sounds like crazy talk to you, but is it possible to connect to the internet via that?

  • YES. DUH

  • I appreciate you taking the time to show us the N900. You answered all my questions and eliminated any doubt that this will be my next device!

Seriously, Nokia owes you one here.

    Thanks dude!

  • No problem. This phone/computer is capable of many more different things for different people. and in my opinion offers a superior experience compared to others. Have fun when you get yours.

  • One. Badass. Mobile. Computer.

  • Wow, someone doesn't call it a smartphone. I personally think this is a new kind of device a "portable workstation".

  • The reason why it's not going to portrait mode when you receive the call and put the N900 in vertical position is because you have the physical qwerty still open...

Otherwise it would have switched to portrait.

  • correct.

  • Nice :D

  • 12 awesome... enough for me. It was running smoothly too AND battery was low.

  • What the fuck!!!

    88 stars

this is a prototype N900 right?

    WoW

  • Wow! time to trow my n97 away!!!!
