I miss being excited about this commercial. Somehow it seemed like something great was coming and it was! But later in life.. now I just look forward to... what? I don't really know anymore. Damn aging and getting old.
This version blew away home gaming in 1982. It was unbelievable to be able to play this at home back then. It was amazing to be a kid in the early '80's with consumer home electronics taking off. I even remember being fascinated with those gaming watches that Casio was selling then with all the muscial chimes and all. I guess it was the handheld electronic games from Mattel and Coleco that started it all in the late '70's and I still have them. It's a totally different scene now.
@Silverluigi98 oh thanks! But ask yourself... what will you do when a maniac in a monkey suite grabs your grilfrend? playing on you Coleco will not help i think ;)
@TheKshow101 I'm not a good jumper, so I'm going to get screwed anyway. Those large barrels can KILL you if they hit. Also, you have flame wisps to worry about too, which is why you don't set crude oil on fire...
The first NES I saw was at FAO Schwarz in San Francisco in December 1985- I'd read articles about it at least a year before then and I didn't think it was ever going to come out since the video game market was pretty much dead by then. I bought mine in September 1986- Super Mario Bros was the killer app. I didn't think the system would be as successful as it was.
I REALLY wanted a Colecovision but there was no way I could afford one at the time- later I bought one for 15 bucks at a thrift store.
Or would it be better to say, the Colecovision port lookede identical to the arcade? :) Simple word reversal I felt like nitpicking at. Your ability to notice that is not bad at all, however.
Wow, the people who made this didn't even bother trying to make a decent commercial. Just so long as you know Donkey Kong is on a home system, that's all that matters. HAHAHA!!
I was wrong about Colecovision's launch year, but I'm certain that Nintendo launched the Japanese Famicom in 85. NES was launched in 1986 (I remember buying one back then).
And it came out first, too. Gamecube was the late comer. Nintendo always did come out last (seriously, SNES, N64, Gamecube. Sometimes a year or even two years after the first of a new 'generation' of consoles).
Colecovision was the first system I owned that actually WAS like the arcade version. Donkey Kong especially. Everything up to it was a really BAD attempt.
I actually remember that commercial. I had the Donkey Kong port for the Atari 26000; man, did it ever suck! I probably would have considered blowing someone for a Colecovision 25 years ago....
I wonder if the Ape got to hit that.

This aired during the spring of 1982, as it notes the game (and console) were "COMING SOON." The CV was eventually released in August 1982.
