I see that when you throw the hook you are snapping your arm into position atalmost the last moment. My coach does the same but i have seen most people get their arm and elbow into position before they are generating momentum.
@Krypteian I find a thrust of the foot rather than a pivot adds more power. Think of pushing a car, would you pivot your foot, or would your thrust from it?
@norhamdan1985 Hey there, thanks for the question. |No pivot of the foot for me. My belief is that the front foot provides explosive drive to get the weight onto the back foot in an instant as the shot lands. If we pivot the front foot I reckon that we don't maximize the power potential.
@myboxingcoach ok..well..i usually dont fully pivot my front foot..i feel like there is too much thinking involved for it and i lose time on throwing the punch because you're thinking too much about technique..however i also pivot in front of my coaches because they always give me shit about that..they always say to pivot it..i dunno..whatever works man.
i actuallty noticed alot of the pivot power is in the knee , i think as long as you tourque ur knee into the shot and keep ur foot grounded you may just get as much if not more power
Great video, been looking around youtube for hook techniques and i must say this was the best one. Been struggling with the hooks for a while now trying to get it right, i tend to drop the arm and try to use the arm and shoulders to generate the punch instead of the body. Anyway, great vid.
Is the the lower bodys twisting for the left hook same to twisting lower body of a jab? N similarly is the right hooks twisting of the lower body and straight the same as well?
@OMGitsHYUN - Yeah, the movements are virtually the same for each. Don't however think of it as 'Twisting.' Make sure that you generate the power for the left hook by 'thrusting' off the front foot and generate a 'whip'/explosive rotation of the lower and therefore upper body. Vice versa for the right hand work.
"whip/explosive rotation" is a good word to use as i see it just like that haha.
i think of it as my jab is a whip, my cross is a piston and my hooks/uppercuts are the "hurt you bad" punches but not haymakers. and haymakers are the killer punches because no matter who throws it, it looks like the boxer is going for a KO everytime.
@myboxingcoach sir i have some issues with the palm in and palm down types of hook..i can see that you are using the palm down style of hooking ..can you give your thoughts on the two types of hook..i find the palm in technique more powerful while the palm down technique faster.
@tagabukastubo Hey Taga - Interesting point you have there. You'll see that the 'palm in' hooks are covered as short range hooks on the site (big power shots!) Anyway, the palm in tend to feel more powerful, but the palm down method allows a 'longer' hook to be thrown without losing power. We should also remember that is the forearm is parallel to the ground and the palm is facing inwards, in amateur boxing this could be classed a 'slap' and the ref may warn you. Hope this helps
@myboxingcoach thank you very much sir. i noticed that i do tend to slap my punches on the mitts when i throw a long range palm in hook. instinctively i always throw palm in hooks but ill try to practice throwing the palm down type for long range punching .btw great channel sir.. i subed :)..and oh sir try to watch the mma fight between dan hardy and condit...it was a clash of left hooks the palm in and palm down .condit KOed hardy with a palm in hook hardy was using the palm down type.
@tagabukastubo - hardy took a wider arc with his hook and his bodyweight wasnt into it, he was well off balance compared to condit. Even though Hardy landed first it didnt drop Condit because Condit was in good posture and was well balanced
I like your videos a lot! Clear, simple and very explanatory. Like a straight punch! =) I've practiced Japanese traditional martial arts for 4 years and recently felt in love with Boxing. Keep up the good posting and Thank you very much!

Isn't it better to follow through with the hook via pivoting the lead foot and distributing your weight between both feet?
