Mao knows nothings abt economy, even the (left-wing) most famous planned economy supporter Chen Yun was kicked out because he stood against Mao's crazy Great Leap Forward. During so-called "three years hardship" when millions dead, Mao's personal villas such as "Di Shui Dong" and "Xi Hu apartment" were built. Mao's wife and daugther NEVER strave for one single day.
@marcusyuguang manchurians have no civilized culture to begin with, they are bunch of nomads who adapt the chinese cultures and make them theirs....now manchurians are using chopstick, in the past manchurians lived in the grassland and have no civilized table manner...the adaptation of chinese words where the manchurians are incapable of forming their own...red is the auspicious colour for chinese since the ancient time and during the Tang Dynasty, Yan Se began to refer to all color.
the subtitle is misleading here. What Deng says is" to let some people getting richer first in order to reach the goal of all people getting rich together faster" rahter thant" , stated in the film, the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer"
There's a famous 1980 interview with Deng Xiaoping by the Italian journalist Oriana Fallaci.
Deng said that there were too many portraits of Mao during the Cultural Revolution, but the one on Tiananmen would stay up "forever." He also said that it was inappropriate to build a mausoleum in the Square, but since it was already there, he wasn't going to tear it down.
For all the faults of Mao, he was the one that led China out of a century of turmoil and made sure no country would dare to invade China like they did a century before. Make no mistake, despite what western media always focus on, Mao was and will always be a hero for Chinese people.
@holyseraph I agree, although Mao did many faults, he succeeded in uniting China, which it wasn't before (politically and mentally). The prior absence of unification was really what made China victims of foreign invasion and the subsequent poverty. Of course Mao didn't help financially or culturally. I think China was just a very laid back passive kinda country that didn't try to invade other countries, therefore poor military, which was probably its downfall.
The poor military issue is more complicated than that. The decline of ancient Chinese civilization started with Mongolians. Despite culture assimilation of the Mongols, the ruling class of the Yuan empire never considered themselves Chinese, thus China was actual sorta placed under a semi-colonial rule of a foreign race. Being a colony really sucked. The Mongols basically sent the Chinese civilization from the edge of industrial revolution back to feudalism.
Generally any civilization that got touched by the Mongols will go back at least 500 years. The Chinese and Russians actually recovered pretty well, the Muslim nations got hit very hard and this is one of the reasons Europe became more advanced than the rest of the world.
The most unfortunate part about China is that the Ming dynasty made a lot of progress and actually managed to recover China back to a first rate power, but China no longer had the overwhelming advantage in technology and trade it enjoyed back in Song dynasty. This is where it really sucked. The bubonic plague (black death) hit Ming dynasty right in the middle of a peasant revolt and opened the door to another nomadic race.
Essentially, both Yuan and Qing dynasty both went for a semi-colonial approach. Where Mongols went for brute force genocide, Qing went for culture strangulation, which included MASSIVE censorship (comparing to the Qing dynasty, today's censorship is about as much censoring as showing porn to 7 years old), rampart re-write of the books and purposely create a more ignorant population. Really, 300 years under that kind of rule will leave any culture weak as a baby.
well ancient Chinese culture has basically died, and probably only remains in Japan, as of course, Japan derived most of its culture from China, and has remained relatively secluded and homogeneous until the past centuries or so. Most of its China's culture is Manchu right?
This simply can not be farther away from the truth. Manchu or the Qing dynasty rulers have very little culture of its own. The majority of Qing dynasty culture is from inherited from older times. While modernization brought a lot change in China, the differences are primarily the difference between feudal and modern society. The idea and culture identity remain the same.
then please explain the nation costume of China? Qipao - that was derived from manchu dress. totally different from hanfu. I am Chinese. Alot of our customs have changed to Manchurian customs. Example peaceful Tang Style Wedding to a loud red noisy Manchurian Wedding
The ancient Chinese wedding tradition can be typically described by "three books and six ceremonies" (三书六礼) which started since the Zhou dynasty. All the dynasty afterward follows the roughly guide line with alteration depend on the circumstance. The fact Qipao was wore a lot in Qing dynasty along the large pony tail is purely Manchu, but really a dress and hair style isn't the entire culture. Things like language, value taught in the teachings (四书五经) are still used today.
"China is the secular world's greatest hope" words of truth my friend. It amazes me how this little man Deng Xiaoping is a giant amongst historical figures. His decision to open china was the most profound decision in the 20th century which affects all our lives here and now in the 21st century. Amazing!!!

@manchewl Isn't it yellow? I know red is also very important, but I'm pretty sure yellow is the most.

@GZH1234 Yellow represents the vast earth and fertility. Red represents happiness and (later) socialism. Red is a tad more important.
