Because of petrol restrictions no civilians in Germany would be driving motor transport, but it is not part of a huge convoy. Rommel got shot up in Normandy by a Spitfire he was driving alone in a civilian unmarked vehicle. It is not like the Germans pointed out what was military or not.
As for Dresden I think it was morally wrong to level cities by this point in the war given how advanced Allied night bombing tech had become. But again, Hague was written before planes became offensive weapons and did not cover bombing so it can't be a war crime if there are not laws to cover it. Cities were only protected from bombardment by land weapons and naval weapons.
So Dresden was a moral crime but not a legal crime. It certainly was a darker chapter in the allied war effort.

Once while in France driving from Caen to Bayeux I saw this low flying aircraft going the other way following the hwyway. I studied it trying to figure out what it was. As it got close to us it dawned on me it was a P47 in D-Day stripes. It went right over us. I had never seen one fly before. It was so cool to see it there over such hallowed ground!

@JollyRodders Thunderbolts largely retired at end of WWII. Airframes had it. Mustang still in production after the war. Korea was initially fought with whatever was on hand in japan to start with. Skyraiders for example. And anything that came over was largely new stuff, Sabres for instance. Commonwealth units in korea included Sea Fury's (UK and Australian) which were a naval relative of the Typhoon/Tempest. Used for ground strikes whilst Sabres fought migs.

This is rare! Excellent footage quality... you kan actually recognise the Bf-109s and Fw-190s in there, and it's also the first time I see real flak in a video.

I wonder why the US was so eager to retire the Thunderbolt at the wars end. I think they would have been useful in Korea and more robust than that other legendry warplane the Mustang in ground attack...Of course it's easy to look back....No one can see into the future.

@JollyRodders Thunderbolts largely retired at end of WWII. Airframes had it. Mustang still in production after the war. Korea was initially fought with whatever was on hand in japan to start with. Skyraiders for example. And anything that came over was largely new stuff, Sabres for instance. Commonwealth units in korea included Sea Fury's (UK and Australian) which were a naval relative of the Typhoon/Tempest. Used for ground strikes whilst Sabres fought migs.

I wonder if the U.K will ever get another aircraft carrier.....with planes on too ;-) Or will those being built now by cheap Polish labour be sold to up and coming India..??

@JollyRodders I think they are still trying to finish the 2 x Queen Elizabeth Class carriers (65000 tons) which are almost up with a nimitz in size. I havent heard anything about stopping them even though economy is shot. Lots of jobs involved. Being built in UK as far as I know.

@MrSKliquid The term for that is relaxed stability, the F-16, Eurofighter Typhoon and Su-30 Flanker are built around this concept, they use an integrated fly-by wire system to ensure the pilot dosnt exceed the fighter's limits, but on some planes there is an override button for the FBW,

problem is. human reaction isnt fast enough to keep the plane stable so they add certain censores that regulate thrust and make the pilots job easier

I think this song is very good with the video, ironic almost. Whilst it suits the smooth nature of a sleek p-47 negociating the skies, it also serves to reduce the trauma of what is a facet of total war which i find rather haunting.

hmm if u notice the pilto at 1:50 made a big mitake and loose a lot of energy flying low like than and pull up to the right. instead what should had done is taking advantage of the plan and put as much speed and climb slowly away from the guy if that plane was a p-52 otherwise if was the bulky version they never had a chance. roll royce engine was a hell of a invention at that time too bad turbo jet planes were not able to mass produce as piston engines were.

Yeah armies with massive manpower and tank shortages turning their guns on allies which were HUGELY sympathized for by the citizens of the western nations, who held rallies in support of the USSR and sent donations.
The west was not in a condition to fight a war against the USSR, the nukes were still not completed nor would they see any significant production for a time. It was a pipe dream to think we could have done it, or had popular backing to do it.

Why must you look at the bad of everything? There is an artistic beauty that can be appreciated by the display of aerobatics. For the record, being a pilot often displaces you from the ugliness of war. The majority of time you never see the death...you are bored, flying, and performing your acrobatics above the mire and blood....followed by a few seconds of terror, and yes...I do fly, and have heard the same testimony from many combat aviators.
