  • The Gray Ghost, indeed.

  • why the ship is crying so much

  • I was on her during this video. Man I love that Carrier!!

  • i cant wait to sign up. the navy is my favorite branch. 1 more year then im signing up

  • my dad use t serve on this

  • For you Star Trek buffs: if my memory serves me correctly, Gene Roddenberry was in the Navy during World War II. He served aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise during that time, hence the name of the Sci-Fi ship based on his show.

  • 1st of all, it was not named after star trek. I believe ther was a sailing ship in colonial times named enterprise, then WWII, then CVA 65, which became CVN 65 (N = nuclear). I was proud to serve on her from 1973 to 1977. Go big "E".

  • @fiftynlonely Dont forget that USS Enterprise CV-6 was later Called CVN-6

    (N = Night operations)

  • @HecticJ9 sorry, but " n" stands for nuclear. Full meaning of CVN

    C= aircraft carrier

    V= Fixed wing(vice rotating wings)

    N=Nuclear

Don't believe, Goggle " CVN meaning".

  • @fiftynlonely Accutally i learned it from the History Channels Series called "Battle 360"

  • !!!! sorry i am new but why is this ship so famous? dont mind if i ask do you?

  • @cookiefan550 The Enterprise has an old Naming History dating back to the beginning of this country.

  • @jtrisgood ok thanks. :D

  • @cookiefan550 This ship is famous for being the very first nuclear aircraft carrier in the United States Navy. She comes from a long line of ships that have been named Enterprise from all the way back to when the British ruled the high seas. There is a petition to get one of the new Ford class super carriers named Enterprise to carry on the tradition. The Enterprise was commissioned in November of 1961 and is scheduled to be decommissioned around 2013.

  • @lilfarmrboy19950 Ok :D Thanks

  • I heard the Enterprise is Being Retired in a Few Years. That ship is a Huge Piece of Maritime and Aviation History. It should be defueled and de nuked or used to provide electricity to parts of the Gulf States that are bing hurt Economically by the Oil Spill.

The Enterprise can do as much good in her retirement as she did when active. My Great Uncle served on the earlier Enterprise CV-6 ,and saw Heavy Combat in the sky as a member of her Crew. He was shot down once and went back up.

  • June-Dec '96 (Mediterranean Cruise). HS-15

  • my uncle worked on their...Wow he fought in the nam war. pilot and I think captain. I am so proud to be related to him

  • The Big E was a great looking ship when it had the

Dome on the 011 deck. The dome was 4 story high.

when we enter San Diego of San Francisco, People

would stop and watch use. I remember waiting for

two or more hours to to go under the golden gate

bridge due to the high tides. I will be back for her

Decon. I will see her again come 2012 : )

  • That was the last day I ever was on the Enterprise!! Best day of deployment... HOMECOMING!

  • I love the shape of the island/tower

  • wow aztig e2 rin name ng char q sa ran online philippines tala server CV_N_65 wahahahaha

  • my sister is about to be deployed on the enterpise for a few months this fall

  • what is she going to do?

When im 18 im joining the navy.

  • she thinks she will be loading missiles and torpedos because she is a weapons specialist

  • oh cool :)

  • those small boats are getting a little close

  • She is still the fastest ship the world

35 plus knots (specific top speed is classified)

  • ya after they retire her she'll be bacjk under the Ford class Carrier class

  • Enterprise. :) Best aircraft carrier to sail, tho' not as great compared to the WWII era Enterprise. Wish the ship would still set sail for many years to come. :(

  • Well, WWII USS Enterprise has a better reputation. But its not better than the current one. The reason why it was decommissioned is because it cannot support modern era aircrafts. Therefore, a newer USS Enterprise was built, improvements such as a nuclear powered engine and a wider deck, and can carry the weapons of today.

  • Oh thats one nice thing about being underway. You get to fish in your free time :)

  • this nimitz carrier is so named because of star trek.. right?

  • No! star trek got the is idea.

  • Enterprise is not a Nimitz class ship. Enterprise is a one off class of her own. she is longer then the Nimitz, Enterprise was the prototype Nuclear powered carrier. she proved the concept & the advantages of nuclear powered aircraft carriers. Star Trek's enterprise was named after the WWII aircraft carrier.

  • Because of Star Trek? Its named after Chester Nimitz..a fleet admiral from WW2.

  • hell no because of star trek, look up CV-6, the ship in star trek was probably named after the REAL USS ENTERPRISE, CV-6

  • I was on it the day it arrived in Norfolk in 1990. What a cruise! Alameda to Norfolk world cruise.

  • WOOOWOOO thats me heading home WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  • You are thinking of the USS Enterprise CV-6. This is the USS Enterprise CVN-65 the greatest ship to ever sail the seven seas .

  • O. Thanks

  • Wait, the year says 2007. I thought they sunk the USS Enterprise in 1958. Am I wrong?

  • Who can forget running aground after west pac 82-83 , I was supposed to go on leave that day and had to wait ,what a bummer. But still the big E will always have a special place in my heart. Heard the ship was co ed now .Whats up with that?Should have done it sooner lol .

  • I remember that , Caused me to miss my flight out of SF airport to Las Vegas, and had to sleep in the terminal.

  • Being that she's such a unique aircraft carrier, is it safe to assume that she'll be preserved as a U.S Navy Museum ship and not scrapped?

  • shut that kid up and put a binky in its mouth

  • Disappointed to read that she'll be retired in a few years. Would be neat if Enterprise could be completely updated and rebuilt, structurally and technology wise. Of course the costs would likely be prohibitive.

  • You know, in the future, I'm sure something else will take the name...but it better live up to the vessels before it.

  • The big cost inhibition with Enterprise is the cost of her Nuclear Plant. USN can operate multiple carriers for the cost of Enterprise.

As a Nuclear Electrician onboard ('99-'05), I was happy to be on a ship with 2 reactors in each of the separate 4 plants (total of 8 reactors). A lot more "battle damage" can be taken.

The Nimitz carriers have 1 reactor in each plant (total of 2 Rx's). Not much redundancy there. Once both Rx's are off-line, you're dead-in-the-water. Not much fun there.

  • USS ENTERPRISE - CVN 65 - this is THE best aircraft carrier ever. If only they had the tech to convert this monster into a spaceship after it's planned decommissioning in 2014...

  • Im on the George H.W Bush, the newest aircraft carrier and we should be going on deployment in 2010 to europe. Id be a liar if I said I joined the navy for patriotic reasons. I wanna see the world!! Dont care who disagrees with that

  • i kno someone on the bush i wanna beat the fuck out of..if u see a barber..a skinny wimpy lookin black kid..tell him malone is lookin for him from bootcamp

  • Holy shit I know exactly who the fuck your talking about!!! He is in my division! Barbary! Alot of people wanna whoop his ass! I had to get used to him it took me a while. Ill tell him when I see him

  • holy crap what are the odds! Small world...

  • please do

  • This ship is the world's first nuclear powered aircraft carrier.

  • When we departed on the 76-77 westpac the scumbag liberal hippies were demonstrating on the Golden Gate. Huge signs ( No Nukes )and throwing rolls of toilet paper down at us. A big F Hugh to you.

  • I supported the United States Navy and I support the US Armed Forces 100%.

If it were me as President I would order the government to double defense spending. I want the Navy to succeed and enlarge. And fuck all liberals anti-war zealots. They know nothing nor can they comprehend that wht the military does is protect us.

  • Don't worry. There is stuff going on under water that would scare the shit out of all of us. The last six trillion $ did not go to welfare checks (like the govt would like us to all think). The US, UK, Aussies, France and others are all readied for a war our enemies will not believe.

  • Is this the same enterprise for WWII with the sister ship hornet which sank???

  • If it was it would have wooden decks and be incapible of handleing modern aircraft.

  • the jewl of the allied navy

  • aliied navy? ... allied with who?

  • This was my 2nd deployment on that boat... thank god its over!!

  • I was on this deployment. that was a sad day.

  • Bloody hell! Great engineering. Use this vessel wisely...

  • the USS McFaul just left yesterday and I had no idea where this place was. Where did you shoot this video from?

  • from a pier on South Thimble Island near Norfolk, VA.

  • Does anybody remember when it was CVAN-65.

  • It still has CVAN posted on all maps the of decks that are postd around the ship. sometimes the maps are wrong because the ship has changd alot of compartments from the way they were in the 60s, lol. it was really confusing for the first 6 months on the ship, after awhile I just started remembering everything, but even after 4 years on that ship I was still finding new compartments i had never been in before, even as I was checking out. im sure there are still a few spots I dont know about, lol.

  • yea, but where is the enterprise home stationed, i forget, norfolk right

  • tiarauscher, the new enterprise is still in commision, old enterprise was i believe sunk in the bikini atoll bomb test

  • CV-6 enterprise which fought in WW2 was decommissioned and sold for scrap metal.

  • i know, didnt find that out until shortly after i posted that post, sry bout that

  • I think the WW2 era Enterprise was actually scraped in the mid 1950s.

  • Where are all the aircraft? Below deck In the hangers?

  • They fly the aircraft onboard once the ship gets out of the channel and is out to sea.

  • or sometimes they just leave them onboard if the ship is just getting fuel for the kitty hawk or juts giving its crew some R&R time

  • Right, I should have mentioned that. Its just when the carrier is in its home port the planes are not usually aboard, as was the case here.

  • Thanks, makes sense.

  • No problem

  • Did the enterpise retire or sink the arcraft carifer?

  • The 1st Enterprise was a sail-ship. Then in WWII, they had the CV-6 USS Enterprise Aircraft Carrier which was instrumental in the Battle of Midway. In the 60's, they launched the first Nuclear powered aircraft carrier the CVN-65 USS Enterprise aka The Big E. It was used in Vietnam and many missions. Soon, it will be put to rest.

I hope nobody asks the relation of the USS Enterprise of Capt. Kirk though. :)

    Noel C.

  • there has always been an Enterprise, It was one of the original ships built by the continental congress back in 1776. I can't see them not building another. Let's hope so anyway

  • The USS Enterprise CV-6 should have been made into a museum. The most decorated ship of World War II deserves better than that.

  • My husband was aboard when the ship did her first round the world cruise in the 60's. We got to go aboard her in 2004 while in Norfolk. BIG ship! We will be there when she is decomminsioned

  • I think they are decommisioning it because the George H. W. Bush will be taking its place. Which will be finished later this year.

  • george h bush if i am correct is already in commision, i think a differnt one is being built to relieve the kitty hawk, than one will replace the enterprise second

  • enterprise was the most decorated ship in ww2 i want to see it if they didnt scrap it

  • what was that white ship which seemed so close to the USS Enterprise? civilian/military escort?

  • thats also over the cheasapeke bay bride/tunnel

  • hopefully they will make it a museum

  • there taking that ship to newport news to fix it up, and it 2013 they are going to decommision it. When they decommision it, it will either be blown up, or made a museum.

  • amazing how something that massive floats =)

  • Istill rememeber the long 2 hour field days. remember when we pulled out of the shipyards and the bottom of the boat sucked in a bunch of suit causing the reactors to shut down only after spending anentire year overhauling and cleaning out everything.I remember we had to serve all of the meat in the thaw box before it went bad.I remember cooking steak for everymeal for days.Still had fun.We had some Real Characters on that boat.$1,500 mess deck tv's for the crew that nobody ever got to watch.

  • Dame i though the USS ENterprise was date back to WWII, did they developed a new one?

  • dude ya theres been 6 US ships to be named Enterprise

  • I did the 2006 and 2007 cruises on the thing! VAW-123... CVW-1

  • i have a toy model of that ship

it was at at yard sale it was only for 3 bucks!

  • I did a Cruise (west-pac)82-83, On the Big E

I will never Forget Her I wa aboard for her 20th Birthday Party , Quite the Shin-dig.

Also I was On The ship when It was first allowed back into Japan , We spent 5 days in Sasebo under protest for Nuke but it was still cool.I sure would like go back to Alongapo , city in the subic bay. ;)

Pearl Harbor on this ship was also a real treat.

  • Hi,I was on the 82-83 west-pac also, and the 84. I was in the Air Dept V-1 Div how about you????????

  • I was in V-4 Div. Worked on the flight deck as a fueler. NickNamed 'Slapshot"

  • Small world, I was in Crash and Salvage.

    How did you like it?

  • Nothing in my life will ever compare to standing on the flight deck , just a few yards from an F-14 Tomcat at full after-burner before it gets launched. Or standing in the catwalk on the Bow of the ship as a plane is launched from the waist-cats and hits the sky less than 50 feet away. These things are something that few have ever experianced or can even comprehend. It may have been a long time Ago , but I still dream of those days . I am proud of My country .

  • I was on Big E for the 82-83 westpac in S-2 division , nick name was smokey. There was a certain amount of pride being on Enterprise no matter what your rating was . She was and is the best ship the navy will ever have.

  • My Dad was on the Big "E" from 1965-1968

  • I was on that cruise and the 2006 cruise...

  • That is HUGE!

  • CVN-65 is indeed a floating city. I am only a Civilian, but I wish that one day I could at least see this glorious ship, or, if i'm lucky, set foot aboard her.

  • Enterprise what a beast of a ship.

  • I first stepped upon the Enterprise at Subic Bay in the Phillippines. It held about 6,000 men. It had its own radio station, a nearly 24 hour mess hall (Eats) while we were at the Gulf of Tonkin (Vietnam), but we could never go to Japan for liberty because the ship was nuclear powered.

I met boxer Joe E. Lewis, President Chang Ki Shek of China, Martha Raye and Jimmy Stewart.

    Rick Ryan

  • WOW I was on her for her world cruise back in 89. I will never forget her

  • The Mighty Big E

  • That's one freakishly big warship.

  • wow its the real uss enterprise..... this ship has really got a famous name now hasnt it,after star trek and all.

  • actually that ship is the Eigth USS Enterprise.... they named the one on Star Trek after CV-6 during WWII

  • I was on the E in the early 80's and on the Independence after that. The best sight in the world is coming back from a cruise and seeing the Chesapeake Bay Bridge tunnel...then you know you're home.

  • This really brings back great memories of my time on the Enterprise with CVW-17 during our summer Med cruise of 1996. What a great time. My ship lives on!

  • my greatest memories were on the enterprise. she's a great ship!

  • i miss my daddy =(

  • I hope you're daddy'll be back

  • What tunnel did they go thru?

  • Tel the crew that did "Navy Numa Numa" they rock! We need more like that!

  • My son was on this ship, and many tears were shed because we couldn't make it. This is great! Thank you for this wonderful video.

  • I'm a british serviceman and was recalled back to the U.K on compassionate grounds, our merlins were grounded but a "Blackhawk" from the USS Enterprise flew in and got me to Basra Air station, I didn't get time to thank the guys who got me there, so i thought i'd take the opportunity to say a big thank you - I owe you guys a beer -or two , stay safe guys.

  • I hope everything is okay with your family now. It is so hard when these things happen. When my mother passed away, I had to go thru the American Red Cross to get him to come home (that is required with those in the military). Anyway, the Navy was good about letting him come home. Luckily he was not at sea at the time, otherwise, they probably would not have let him.

  • My hubby is withthe strike group that left a few days later.. i coudlnt bare to see him leave but now that i can i can watch what it would have been like

  • Thanks for sharing this, my son is on the ship and it's great, since I couldn't be there to see him off, I have this. Thanks again.
