Guys I am very confused. I have a medium fixed blade (kabar potbelly) but now i want a large survival blade. I am torn between the onterio marine raider sp10, the Gen 2 sp50 and the RTAK 2. I AM CONCERNED in the sharp point of he marine raider (is it weak?) the short gen 2 sp50(8,8 inches is too short nutn?) and the price of the RTAK 2 (96 dolars with shipment) i am a college student.
Nutn PLEASE tell me overall what do you recomend me. Thank you for all the good job!
mr nutn, I mean no critisism here, but can you please not review a knife until you beat it up? It would make your review 2 times better because you would have had experience. I still love your reviews, but please use it before reviewing.
my dad always complains i need to use a hatchet around the farm to chop. but i love my raider to much! i took the origional coat off and tiger stripped it black and polished an area for reflection in a survival area! but the raider is a beast of a knife!
looking to buy one of my first survival knives, on a budget so i can't buy a trailmaster :'( but i'm down to either the SP 10 Marine Raider or the Ka-Bar Heavy Bowie. would like some input becuase as far as i can tell they both look awesome. thank u Veri and Nutn
I make minimal wage but i try my best to get stuff for camping and hiking. To me a blade like this and other gear that is cheap and high quality is god like to me. I'm so glad you reviewed a large blade like this, because if you didn't i would be almost to on edge to get a 100+ large blade which so many are and I think aren't worth there value for being such a simple tool.
i was gonna buy a Ka-Bar next gen, but after i saw this knife i changed my mind.....I'm gonna buy this knife first and then get the Ka-Bar another time.
@eveyone100 You are so right. Actually, I'm like that with a couple other blades I've purchased lately: Fallkniven's A1 and A2, once again per Nutn's recommendations. Thank goodness the Heavy Bowie works so well. I'll get around to using my new blades eventually, but man, it's going to be hard working up to it.
For the Ontario sp10, do you have to keep the side snap strap (pardon the alliteration :P) done up or can you remove it and just use the top one that touches the handle?
@patruick94 I've tried walking around with just the top snap done, and I haven't noticed any difference in the way the knife feels secure in its sheath.
You can find these at chestnut ridge knife shop . com for $33. They're factory seconds but nothing at all was wrong with mine except a pen dot sized chip in the coating. Go buy one! they only have 3 left!
For $50-$60 you can buy 5 or 6 of these for the same price as 1 custom knife, which may not even be as sturdy as this. I'd rather buy 6 of these than 1 custom knife that may or may not even be as strong. It has a time proven design and a battle proven design, the USMC used to carry a knife just like this in WW2. ITs not one of those weird new designs on the market or wierd custom designs.
This knife is superior to any knife on the market, first of all for the price you can't buy any knife out there as sturdy as this. It has a quarter inch thick tang, full tang, kraton grip and that hand gaurd is thick too, that'll protect your hand from anything on this planet.
I sharpened that clip, makes the knife much better now for combat and for utility purposes too. This is the only knife i'll ever need in my life time, maybe this and a good multitool is all i carry in the woods and keep next to my bed at home. I'm ready to take on a bear or a predator or aliens or even a t-rex or anything that comes my way. This baby is .25" thick and it looks to my like the tang is also .25" you could probably park a car on it and it would barely bend
@firebeaver39 He has military experience also (Lt Col in the airforce, retired) but for this knife his camping and hiking experience is more important. i believe
Hey nutn, great videos! Could you do a video of the knives that you would take out for bush craft in the Equatorial Jungles? Based on the video I'm hoping you can make, I'm going to decide what knives I'm really going to invest in. By watching your other videos I've decided that the mid sized knife MUST be a KA-BAR.. It's the large machete type knife and small knife that I haven't decided on. Happy holidays : )
Unfortunately the UK has much stricter blade laws otherwise I'd have one of those in a second. Ever tried making kindling with an axe and a 2inch swiss army knife?
SPEC Plus SP1-95 stays with me always. I also have a ten inch SPEC from Ontario. Great knifes. And FINALLY someone who understands and explains what the thing was made for. It is such a beautiful knife with such a great weight. One of these is definitely going in my BoB.
Thanks for the review, not just this knife, but all your knives...really helped me make an informed decision!
@spudnutsncoffee i looked at that comparing it to other knives, and it seems to me its no thinner then the regular ka-bar u see in the video, just the bulk of the rest of the blade and that pronounced clip makes it look that way.
@spudnutsncoffee - I beat the snot out of my SP10 several times already. I was batoning through logs a good 8-9 inches wide so I only had a very small amount of the tip exposed to smack on. Honestly I was a little apprehensive about batoning on it but I did it anyway and the tip held up just fine. Check out my review of the SP10. Not as good as nutn here, but it has some info nutn didn't have time for in this video. watch?v=yOXcGKniV0E
@vjanda1 - Cold Steel makes excellent knives. The 12 inch bowie machete by cold steel (as reviewed by nutnfancy) is one such knife. But as a general rule, machete's are thin blades and usually not good for batoning through logs. If you want something that is just tough as nails, look into this SP10 the equally impressive Ontario SP5, Cold Steel laredo bowie, etc. Any of these would be a suitable (and stronger) substitute for a machete, but they will be heavier.
I am looking for a good chopping knife bc my older one broke. i havent been looking at new knives and was wondering which of these is the best chopper: Sp10 marine raider, coldsteel trailmaster, or rtak 2? Thanks great vids
ka bar large heavy bowie, tis pretty much the same as the trailmaster but at half the price and has carbon steel rather than that rubbish laminated stuff
Rtak II is about 110 bucks, the SP10 is 59ish and the CS trail master (if you can currently find one) is about 130-145... I almost put down the 140 dollars for a CS trailmaster in SK5.. Until I picked up a SP10.. Frankly I can't see the SP10 doing any less of a good job then the Trailmaster. I really do feel like I can clear a forest with the SP10. Also Ontario seems to have updated the blade coating it is no longer just paint but paint and epoxy.

Im gettin this bad mofo for when I go to Alaska for work. will be a nice blade to have, plus Im gonna have a Springfield M1a Scout squad .308 for dem bears and such
Bought this knife from Cabelas last May based mostly on this review. Excellent knife, excellent review!
I was carrying the Raider when I was squirrel hunting this weekend and there was a small tree that had fallen over the trail and was quite aggravating to crouch under. The Raider Bowie blasted through it, providing invaluable service. Just the latest example of a knife that has gotten a lot of use.
you carry that knife for hunting WOW i would call u noob but if it works for u its ok the biggest thing i carry forhunting is a 5 inch blade but mostly the legendary buck 110 thats one of the best hunting knives ever
I watch a lot of nutnfancy vids and this is an older one, so I'm not saying the current output isn't much superior to this, but a gear review with no practical experience on the blade in use is worthless to me.
this bowie gets the job done...it's a heavy knife with average balance....the handle is very comfortable when chopping wood...if you want to customize this knife with a different handle the pin can be drilled out at the back of the handle and once it's out the handle just slides off....you can replace it with bone, wood, whatever you like.
Hello nutnfancy, you mention that this knife can hold it's own against any custom knife out there, I'm interested to know how you think it will compare to the cold steel natchez bowie knife?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Being 1095, the steel is not that strong. It will hold an edge (not great by the way), and be relatively easy to sharpen. Put this knife in a vice and pull on the handle - WITH FORCE - I bet it will bend. To do real work with logs the knife should be able to withstand that. I think this guy might work for ontario. If price is not an issue get yourself a busse FBM or similar (look at the destruction test for this blade on youtube). It would eat this wannabe blade for breakfast.
ive had this knife for around 8 months, in that time ive processed a log cabins worth of wood (chopping, batoning), used it for shelter craft, fire wood and everything else. really beat the crap out of it and its the best knife ive ever seen at the price range. I hope your wrong about Ontario getting rid of there SP line cause it is awesome.
shaneshop (dot) net was giving these same knives away as free gifts on some of their other products. They look to be out of stock just now, but they have some other knives by ontario.
I've had mine since 2005, used it extensively far above the polar circle and far below, during my work in the army. I love it to bits! it has never failed me, it has not seen anywhere near as much rust as other knifes of my colleagues, and proven to be an all out durable tool.
the ONE thing I dont like is its sheath. anyone have a good idea for a new sheath?
I have this knife and I've beaten the crap out of mine originally thinking it a piece of shit. This knife will hold up to a TON of abuse. my opinion of it has DEFINITELY changed. Chopped through an entire downed tree branch(very thick and about 30 feet in width) after Hurricane Ike. and I mean 30 feet in width not the single branch but a bunch of branches all connected. I was trying to break it up for removal. But yeah this thing holds up bigtime.
nutnfancy...could you do a review on the case XX bowie? I use it as my "hacker" and a ka-bar on my left shoulder, but wanted to know your thoughts on the case xx bowie it's very shiny when not coated....any suggestions about that?
hello Nutnfancy, ive watched tons of your videos and you seem to know a lot and i was wondering if this knife is the best knife for Georgia/woods situations for the money. because i need something less then 65 dollars.thank you
Great value for the price. But i dont like that clip point for survival.I preffer drop points. They´re more safe and dont take out weight where its most needed.I like full thick spine all the way thru the blade if its posible. 1/4" thickness if its posible. Of course we are talking about a 60 bucks knife, but i don´t think this Ontario can outperform my Busse FHS in any way.Even beeing a longer blade.
yes, i know, we are all different so its a matter of taste. Anyway, I know Ontario and Ka-bar gives much knife for their prices. In deed, I am now searching for a marine raider to buy and try it, so i can compare it with my high end survivals like my Busses, and with other cheap stuff like Ka-bar Heavy Bowie, but is much out of stock anywhere.
Can i have it? Haha jk

just got this knife, it rocks :D
factory edge kinda sucked though.
30 degrees and badly done.
definetly needs a little work out of the box...
sheath aint that bad.
its light and the snaps are good, overall reasonably durable.
though its a very non tactical sheath.
i dont think soldiers will like it with the loud snaps and no quick access.
also might not hold up to rolling around in rough terrain and stuff like that.

I own the blade, the tip is what I use the most, and it hasn't broke yet.
Mine probably just got a really good tempering on the tip. :)
mindfreakpro 1 year ago
I wonder about the tip....once you begin to baton with it, how long before you break the tip off?
spudnutsncoffee 1 year ago
@spudnutsncoffee i looked at that comparing it to other knives, and it seems to me its no thinner then the regular ka-bar u see in the video, just the bulk of the rest of the blade and that pronounced clip makes it look that way.
Whisper6911 1 year ago
@Whisper6911 It's actually twice as thick as the USMC :)
MrTefached 1 year ago
@spudnutsncoffee - I beat the snot out of my SP10 several times already. I was batoning through logs a good 8-9 inches wide so I only had a very small amount of the tip exposed to smack on. Honestly I was a little apprehensive about batoning on it but I did it anyway and the tip held up just fine. Check out my review of the SP10. Not as good as nutn here, but it has some info nutn didn't have time for in this video. watch?v=yOXcGKniV0E

Love the vids.
Can you recommend a quality machete that won't let me down when put to the test.
I hear the cold steel are crap.
vjanda1 1 year ago
@vjanda1 - Cold Steel makes excellent knives. The 12 inch bowie machete by cold steel (as reviewed by nutnfancy) is one such knife. But as a general rule, machete's are thin blades and usually not good for batoning through logs. If you want something that is just tough as nails, look into this SP10 the equally impressive Ontario SP5, Cold Steel laredo bowie, etc. Any of these would be a suitable (and stronger) substitute for a machete, but they will be heavier.

Looks good, I will have to pick one up, I'll prolly end up making my own sheath for it though.

I am looking for a good chopping knife bc my older one broke. i havent been looking at new knives and was wondering which of these is the best chopper: Sp10 marine raider, coldsteel trailmaster, or rtak 2? Thanks great vids
Slowboy123458 1 year ago
ka bar large heavy bowie, tis pretty much the same as the trailmaster but at half the price and has carbon steel rather than that rubbish laminated stuff
MegaMatt333 1 year ago
@MegaMatt333 It's like 1/4 the price of the non-laminated Trailmaster :P And the lamintated isn't rubbish, it's just not worth the $225-$300!!! :P
MrTefached 1 year ago
@Slowboy123458

Blackhardt72 2 years ago
you carry that knife for hunting WOW i would call u noob but if it works for u its ok the biggest thing i carry forhunting is a 5 inch blade but mostly the legendary buck 110 thats one of the best hunting knives ever

@nightshade288
I won't say I carry it for hunting in particular. I just carry it.

I watch a lot of nutnfancy vids and this is an older one, so I'm not saying the current output isn't much superior to this, but a gear review with no practical experience on the blade in use is worthless to me.

codebman 2 years ago
this bowie gets the job done...it's a heavy knife with average balance....the handle is very comfortable when chopping wood...if you want to customize this knife with a different handle the pin can be drilled out at the back of the handle and once it's out the handle just slides off....you can replace it with bone, wood, whatever you like.
sirg31 2 years ago
Hello nutnfancy, you mention that this knife can hold it's own against any custom knife out there, I'm interested to know how you think it will compare to the cold steel natchez bowie knife?

Being 1095, the steel is not that strong. It will hold an edge (not great by the way), and be relatively easy to sharpen. Put this knife in a vice and pull on the handle - WITH FORCE - I bet it will bend. To do real work with logs the knife should be able to withstand that. I think this guy might work for ontario. If price is not an issue get yourself a busse FBM or similar (look at the destruction test for this blade on youtube). It would eat this wannabe blade for breakfast.
general38 2 years ago
He never said it was the best in the world. but if price is no object then the rtak 2.
Affliction4evr 2 years ago 2
@general38
I think the blade would rather explode than bend... The carbon makes it VERY hard and more crispy than other steel types.

Love your videos. You the man. I would love to see a comparison/reviews on the kabar heavy Bowie vs Ontario sp10 marine raider Bowie. Thanks
sueperhopper 2 years ago 14
ive had this knife for around 8 months, in that time ive processed a log cabins worth of wood (chopping, batoning), used it for shelter craft, fire wood and everything else. really beat the crap out of it and its the best knife ive ever seen at the price range. I hope your wrong about Ontario getting rid of there SP line cause it is awesome.

I've had mine since 2005, used it extensively far above the polar circle and far below, during my work in the army. I love it to bits! it has never failed me, it has not seen anywhere near as much rust as other knifes of my colleagues, and proven to be an all out durable tool.
the ONE thing I dont like is its sheath. anyone have a good idea for a new sheath?
troenning 2 years ago
Any sheath designed for the Western W49 bowies will fit this knife, snugly but it WILL work. And it's a good option. I know from experience.

I use it as my "hacker" and a ka-bar on my left shoulder, but wanted to know your thoughts on the case xx bowie it's very shiny when not coated....any suggestions about that?
campcomp00 1 year ago
it's not paint, it's powdercoat, the difference is that the powdercoat is more durable
jeffbengtson 2 years ago
The black paint is a rust protection coat and is great for tactical use so your not shinning sun rays around. ALSO MADE IN THE USA.

JohnH523 2 years ago 3
hello Nutnfancy, ive watched tons of your videos and you seem to know a lot and i was wondering if this knife is the best knife for Georgia/woods situations for the money. because i need something less then 65 dollars.thank you
wylliboi 2 years ago
Great value for the price. But i dont like that clip point for survival.I preffer drop points. They´re more safe and dont take out weight where its most needed.I like full thick spine all the way thru the blade if its posible. 1/4" thickness if its posible. Of course we are talking about a 60 bucks knife, but i don´t think this Ontario can outperform my Busse FHS in any way.Even beeing a longer blade.

i personally like this shape more,
but i think you would like the sp5 more
because of your stated points.
ontario has very nice knives for the price.
i would rely on my ontario knives anyday.
kabar's heavy bowie is cool too.
its price is fairly decent as well.
Selax 2 years ago
yes, i know, we are all different so its a matter of taste. Anyway, I know Ontario and Ka-bar gives much knife for their prices. In deed, I am now searching for a marine raider to buy and try it, so i can compare it with my high end survivals like my Busses, and with other cheap stuff like Ka-bar Heavy Bowie, but is much out of stock anywhere.
zionburner 2 years ago
well, you can look at knifecenter or knifesupply.
everywhere else is sold out.
so shipping is more with knifecenter.
but knifesupply only ships usps, which sucks
because they ship REALLY slow and
are thrashed around more.
but thats my experience.
got mine from knifecenter for that purpose
alone.
good luck!

oh well,so... i will see what i can find there, so thanks a lot for the info, man. I really apreciate it.
