It's ridiculous, and bad history, to say that this one stole from that. They ALL did, freely. Buster Keaton discussed this many-times in later interviews. Lloyd, Keaton, Harry Langdon and Mr. Chaplin all borrowed from each other, by unspoken, and friendly, mutual agreement. Hope and Crosby in one of their "Road" movies borrow a "soap in a bucket" gag that Laurel and Hardy had earlier used in "Swiss Miss", and they improve on it! Why not - - they all knew proven material is usually the best!
As a kid I had a friend who owned a 16 MM sound projector, and owned most of the Castle Films A&C shorts. These bought back fond memories. As a much older man watching them again, I realize this comedy and timing was learned in burlesqe...not from the 3 Stooges. A&C had learned well and transferred their skills to movies!
Well, if you want to get technical, Billy Bevan was the first comedian that I saw battle an oyster in his soup...and deliver ice up a long long flight of steps...and those films were produced in the 1920's...a while before Curly battled his oyster or tried to deliver ice up a long flight of steps.
It wasn't so much the comedians stealing bits...but more so the writers stealing bits... Just some comedians pulled off the gags better than others.
"Moe also revealed that Lou Costello was known to "borrow" Three Stooges films from Columbia Pictures from time to time. Presumably, it was to study Curly. Inevitably, Moe said, Curly's routines would show up in Abbott and Costello features"
now i do tottaly agree that comedians like the stooges abboott and cosello ect did routines from vaudville and had the same writers

yes, the oyster in the stew routine goes back quite a ways.....Abott & Costello, Three Stooges, and even back to the Charlie chaplin era
