Saying MJ's hand slap on his lay up was unnecessary sounds like someone who never played. He's unique and it was his thing. When you have talent like that there is no lay up blueprint.
@retecoomoati I don't think you can make that judgement unless you were making the move, It was instinct so it's easy for someone to watch & say i would of done that or he should of done this. The point is you just don't know.
See the guy trailing the play with the kneebrace on? Know who that is? That is Sean Elliott who played for the Arizona Wildcats and in the NBA. There were a couple other NBAers there that day.
I was there when this was filmed. It was in 1987 at UNC-Wilmington. MJ had a basketball camp and at night they would play pick-up games. I saw MJ do the most spectacular lay-up I have ever seen during those games and he actually missed the shot. It was insane.
In my opinion the sickest up and under move i've ever seen Jordan do...that being said, it was totally unecessary lol...once he elevated there was totally enough space to complete a basic right-handed layup. Same with the infamous scoop shot against the Lakers in '91. But that's MJ for ya, always showing his out of this world talent, even if something so much easier could've been done to complete the play.
@Emil308 that was definitely a necessary reverse, look hes got the hand in his face by the time he recovers hes deep underneath the basket, the only thing you can do there is reverse it
@RuttermusiC No buddy...i've seen this clip a thousand times. Look at it again. He beats the guy at the top, in the baby blue shorts. Next is the guy in the navy blue shorts with the white triangle on them, he reaches in to try slap the ball, but MJ cradles the ball to his left elevating at the same time. Now the 3rd and last defender in the grey shorts, makes a futile attempt but MJ has already elevated into a clear path to basket for an easy right hand lay-in, yet still decides to reverse lol
@RuttermusiC Pause it at :05, that's a clear path right hand layup...it's the camera angle that makes him look like he's too far under the basket, when he really isn't.
@Emil308 yeah it wasnt unnecessary in that lakers game cause mj said he was going for the dunk but then he saw the players hands raise thinking he was going to block it so he jsut switched hands so he wouldnt get blocked
@HannaBoyOD I dunno about that, even if MJ said that I think he's just trying to make an excuse to justify that Lakers scoop shot, but it still wasn't necessary, nobody was in the air anywhere near high enough to block him.
@Emil308 for the record according to jordan the one against the Lakers was done to avoid a block, the block never came that's why it looked unnecessary

i wonder if the little clap is necessary to put the ball up in the end, i see wade doing that too whenever he does circus shots
sunike07 1 year ago
@sunike07 yeah cuz he's imitating MJ.

@sunike07 I doubt that it's necessary. Wade probably does it too cuz he grew up watching MJ in Chicago.
